DHL (Dalsey, Hillblom and Lynn) International GmbH adalah sebuah penyedia jasa
kurir, parsel, dan pos kilat yang merupakan salah satu divisi dari Deutsche Post DHL.
Perusahaan ini mengantarkan lebih dari 1,3 milyar parsel per tahun.

Perusahaan ini didirikan di Amerika Serikat pada tahun 1969 dan mengembangkan
layanannya ke seluruh dunia pada akhir dekade 1970-an. Pada tahun 1979, melalui DHL
Air Cargo, perusahaan ini berekspansi ke Kepulauan Hawaii dengan menyediakan jasa
kargo antarpulau menggunakan dua unit pesawat terbang DC-3 dan empat unit pesawat
terbang DC-6. Dalsey dan Hillblom mengawasi sendiri aktivitas DHL Air Cargo hingga
perusahaan tersebut bangkrut pada tahun 1983. Pada masa kejayaannya, DHL Air Cargo
mempekerjakan lebih dari 100 orang pelaksana, staf, dan pilot.

Perusahaan ini lebih fokus pada pengantaran lepas pantai dan antarbenua, namun
kesuksesan FedEx membuat perusahaan ini mengembangkan layanan pengantaran
domestiknya di Amerika Serikat mulai tahun 1983

Pada tahun 1998, Deutsche Post mulai mengakuisisi saham DHL. Deutsche Post akhirnya
memegang mayoritas saham DHL pada tahun 2001, dan kemudian berhasil memegang
semua saham DHL pada bulan Desember 2002. Deutsche Post kemudian melebur DHL ke
dalam divisi pos kilatnya, serta mengembangkan penggunaan nama DHL ke divisi, unit
bisnis, dan anak usahanya yang lain. Saat ini, DHL Express berbagi nama DHL dengan
unit bisnis yang lain, seperti DHL Global Forwarding dan DHL Supply Chain. DHL lalu
memperkuat eksistensinya di Amerika Serikat dengan mengakuisisi Airborne Express.

Pada tahun 2016, pendapatan divisi ini meningkat sebesar 2,7% menjadi €14 milyar.
Sementara laba sebelum pajaknya meningkat sebesar 11,3% menjadi €1,5 milyar.

Awal mula
Saat Larry Hillblom masih berkuliah hukum di Sekolah Hukum Boalt Hall Universitas
California, Berkeley pada akhir dekade 1960-an, ia mulai bekerja sebagai kurir untuk perusahaan
asuransi Michael's, Poe & Associates (MPA). Ia mulai menjalankan tugas kurir antara Bandar Udara
Internasional Oakland dan Bandar Udara Internasional Los Angeles, yakni mengambil paket dari
penerbangan terakhir di hari tersebut, dan mengantar paket ke penerbangan pertama di keesokan
harinya, selama lima kali dalam seminggu
Setelah lulus kuliah, Hillblom bertemu dengan seorang pemasar MPA, Adrian Dalsey dan mereka pun
berencana mengembangkan konsep pengantaran cepat MPA ke perusahaan lain. Mereka terbang antara
Honolulu dan Los Angeles, guna mengangkut konosemen untuk klien pertamanya, Seatrain Lines.

Permulaan
Hillblom mengambil sebagian uang pinjaman kuliahnya untuk memulai perusahaan ini, serta mengajak
Adrian Dalsey dan Robert Lynn sebagai mitra, dengan gabungan inisial nama belakang ketiganya
sebagai nama perusahaan (DHL).[9] Mereka menggunakan sebuah Plymouth Duster untuk berkeliling
seantero San Francisco guna mengambil dokumen di dalam koper, lalu bergegas ke bandara untuk
memesan tiket penerbangan dengan menggunakan kartu kredit perusahaan. Dengan makin
berkembangnya perusahaan, mereka pun mulai mempekerjakan kurir. Kurir pertamanya adalah Max
dan Blanche Kroll, yang apartemennya di Hawaii kerap menjadi tempat istirahat bagi kurir DHL yang
lain.
Ekspansi domestik
Pada dekade 1970-an, DHL resmi menjadi sebuah penyedia jasa pengantaran internasional, mirip
seperti Loomis dan Purolator, yang saat itu merupakan satu-satunya penyedia jasa kurir internasional.
Satu-satunya kompetitor DHL di bisnis pengantaran kilat adalah Federal Express (FedEx), yang baru
membuka layanan internasional pada tahun 1981, dengan membuka rute ke Toronto, Ontario, Kanada.
Walaupun begitu, pengantaran domestik sangat menguntungkan, sehingga DHL baru menempati
peringkat ketiga di belakang FedEx dan UPS.

Dibeli oleh Deutsche Post

Deutsche Post mulai mengakuisisi saham DHL pada tahun 1998, dan akhirnya memegang mayoritas
saham DHL pada tahun 2001. Pada akhir tahun 2002, Deutsche Post telah mengakuisisi semua saham
DHL, dan kemudian melebur DHL ke dalam divisi pos kilatnya. ama DHL lalu dikembangkan ke
divisi, unit bisnis, dan anak usaha Deutsche Post yang lain. Saat ini, DHL Express berbagi nama DHL
dengan unit bisnis Deutsche Post yang lain, seperti DHL Global Forwarding, DHL Freight,
DHL Supply Chain, dan DHL Global Mail.
Pada tahun 2002, DHL memperkenalkan logo dan skema warna baru, yakni merah dan kuning.
