 SUKU MINANGKABAU
Konon nenek moyang suku Minangkabau : keturunan Iskandar Zulkarnain atau
Alexander The Great. Orang Minang merupakan salah stau bagian dari rakyat
Deutro Melayu atau Melayu Muda yang melakukan migrasi dari daratan Cina
Selatan menuju Pulau Sumatera.
Migrasi ini terjadi sekitar 2.000 hingga 2.500 tahun yang lalu. Mereka masuk dari
arah timur Pulau Sumatera, kemudian menyusuri aliran sungai Kampar hingga ke
dataran tinggi. Wilayah inilah yang kemudian menjadi kampung halaman orang
Minang.
Orang Minang dan Melayu pada awalnya dianggap sama. Hingga pada abad ke-
19, penyebutan orang Minang dan orang Melayu mulai dibedakan berdasarkan
tradisi matrilineal dan patrilineal. Hukum adat Minangkabau menjalankan sistem
kekerabatan matrilineal hingga saat ini kini. Sementara adat istiadat Melayu
menjalankan sistem kekerabatan patrilineal.

Etnis Minangkabau terbagi menjadi banyak klan atau suku. Budaya Minangkabau
dibentuk oleh Datuk Ketumanggungan dan Datuk Perpatih Nan Sebatang.Di masa
awal pembentukan budaya Minang, hanya ada 4 suku awal, yaitu Klan Koto,
Klan Bodi, Suku Caniago, dan Klan Piliang.  Keempat klan ini terbagi menjadi 2
sistem kekuasaan adat yang disebut sebagain Kelarasan.

Kelarasan Koto Piliang berkembang menjadi sistem aristokrat. Sementara

Kelarasan Bodi Caniago berkembang dengan menganut sistem
konfederasi.Nama-nama klan atau suku dari etnis Minangkabau berasal dari
bahasa Sansekerta.

Bahasa Sansekerta adalah jenis bahasa yang mendapat pengaruh dari bahasa
Hindu dan Buddha yang sangat berkembang di kala itu.Seiring dengan
perkembangan budaya dan bahasa Minang, nama-nama tersebut kemudian
berkembang pengucapannya sesuai dengan logat orang Minang. Selanjutnya,
bahasa yang berkembang tersebut mendapat pengaruh dari agama Islam.
Beberapa suku Minang yang berkembang dari 4 klan awal, antara lain:
Payobada, Putopang, Sikumbang, Tanjuang, dsb.

awal Minangkabau pernah memeluk
agama Buddha pada masa kejayaan
Kerajaan Sriwijaya, Dharmasraya, hingga

anaknya Ananggawarman.
Saat ini, agama Islam telah mengakar pada
adat istiadat Minangkabau. Jika ada anggota
masyarakat Minang yang keluar dari agama,
maka yang bersangkutan secara langsung
dianggap keluar dari masyarakat Minang.
Tradisi ini disebut dengan “dibuang sepanjang
adat”. Ia akan dikucilkan dari pergaulan dan
tidak diperbolehkan mengikuti kegiatan adat.
 Sistem Kekerabatan Matrilineal

Berbeda dengan kebanyakan suku di tanah air, kaum

Garis keturunan merujuk pada ibu dan perempuan menempati kedudukan yang istimewa
disebut sebagai Samandeyang berarti dibandingkan laki-laki. Perempuan dijuluki sebagai
seibu atau satu ibu. Pihak ayah Bundo Kanduang.

ipar. Sedangkan Sumandi dianggap
sebagai tamu di dalam keluarga.
