B. READING COMPREHENSIONs
Many hundreds of years ago, there lived an old woman, all alone in a tiny hut. She had no
children, and no one to ask after her. The old woman would weep night and day for a child,
but of course, with no result. One day she took an egg, wrapped it carefully in cotton cloth,
and put it in a corner of her hut. Night and day the old woman looked after the egg, in the
hope that maybe it would give her a child. But nothing happened, and every day the old
woman grew more and more unhappy.
One morning, as she went to look at the egg, she found that it had broken – and in its
shell sat the tiniest, loveliest baby boy that anyone could imagine. The baby saw the old
woman and smiled and held out its tiny arms. The old woman was delighted – here at last
was the child she had wanted for so long.
The old woman loved the child dearly, and looked after it so carefully and so well,
that by the time it was a year old it could walk and talk as well as any grown up. But for some
strange reason, no one knows what, the baby stopped growing. He remained as tiny as a one-
year old for the rest of his life. He began to be called the ‘Dwarf’.
The old woman did not care. She still loved the baby devotedly. ‘You will be a great
king one day, my child,’ she told him, sure that the baby was destined for great things.
One day the old woman said to the Dwarf, ‘Go to the king’s palace, my son, and challenge
him to test his strength against yours.’
The Dwarf protested. ‘How can I challenge the king, mother?’ he said horrified. ‘He is
greater and much stronger than I. ’But the old woman insisted, and the Dwarf was forced to
do as she said.
The king smiled at the child’s challenge, and asked him to lift a heavy stone. The Dwarf went
weeping to the old woman. ‘How can I lift that heavy stone?’ he asked. ‘If the king can lift it,
so can you,’ said the old woman, and sent him back to the palace .And sure enough, the
Dwarf was able to lift the heavy stone.
The king gave him many more tasks to do, but anything the king could do, the Dwarf could
do as well.

With the development of modern technology, internet offers people more and more
convenience. With the help of the internet, people can do a lot of things without going out,
like paying bills, watching movies, study online and so on. Among those, the most attractive
one for people is doing shopping online. Online shopping does have many advantages.
Online shopping attracts people because it has many advantages. Nowadays, more and more
people, especially for the office worker, don’t have that much free time go shopping. They’re
busy working, studying and doing other important things. So online shopping becomes the
most convenient and best way for them.
Moreover many people choose shopping online because they can’t stand that crowded and
noisy environment. For shopping online, they just need to choose the article they want and
pay online, and then shopping is finished.
To most people, shopping is not a hard and anguished job anymore, they can just stay at
home, click the mouse, spend several minutes to get what they want without stepping out of
the room or standing in line for checking.

The Battle of Surabaya was fought between pro-independence Indonesian soldiers and militia
against British and British Indian troops as a part of the Indonesian National Revolution.
On 27 October 1945, a British plane from Jakarta dropped leaflets over Surabaya urging
all Indonesian troops and militia to surrender their weapons. The leaders of the Indonesian
troops and militia were angered, seeing it as a breaking of the agreement reached with
Mallaby earlier.
Brigadier A. W. S. Mallaby, the British brigade commander in Surabaya, was travelling about
Surabaya to spread the news about the new agreement to his troops. Shortly after that,
Mallaby was shot and killed. That made Lieutenant General Sir Philip Christison was angered
.
At dawn on 10 November, British troops began a methodical advance through the city
under the cover of naval and air bombardment. Fighting was heavy, with British troops
clearing buildings room by room.

With 13.2 million people, Jakarta is now the world’s tenth largest city. Where does all the
rubbish go? Jakarta’s garbage is a stinking time-bomb waiting to explode.
Jakarta produces as much as 6,250 tons of rubbish a day. It does not have enough trucks to
collect all the rubbish, let alone enough space to put it. For 17 years the Jakarta administration has
used a 108 hectare tract of land in the neighboring municipality of Bekasi as a dump. Jakarta had what
it thought was a water-tight deal. So when the Bekasi administration decided to raise the ‘rent’ on the
land, all hell let loose.
The new agreement signed by the Jakarta and Bekasi administration gave Bekasi management
responsibility for the dump. But confusion reigned over the interpretation of the contract. The Bekasi
administration claimed that it owned the land, and had the right to manage it, but Jakarta wanted to
keep control of its biggest dump.
Under the Regional Autonomy Act (23/1999), the mayor of Bekasi has to meet his municipal
budget deficit. For him the dump is a potential pot of gold. He imposed a levy of Rp85,000 (A$14)

per ton of rubbish dumped. In addition, he calculated that Bekasi could make money out of recycling,

When we had a holiday last year, my family and I went to a place at the seaside and
borrowed a boat from one of our friends. We sailed and finished on the sea all day.
When the sea was rough, we sailed on a small lake near the sea instead. There were not
many fish in the lake, but in the sea we caught a lot with a hook, line and small pieces of
bread.
When the weather was fine, we collected pieces of dried wood and fired or grilled our
fish over them on the beach.
41. What kind of experience did the writer have in the text
It was a stormy night. My parents and my sisters were away at a friend’s house. I hoped they
would return home soon. The lights kept flickering. I did not like being alone.
The lightning and thunder were getting worse. Suddenly, my worst fear came true. The house
became pitch dark. I remembered that my brother kept candles in a cupboard in the living room. I
groped around for my way downstairs, stumbling down the steps. I could hardly see anything.
Finally I found the candles in a drawer. Now I had to go the kitchen for a matchbox. I knocked
against things. But, at last, I found a matchbox and lit a candle. Suddenly, I heard sounds coming from
the porch. I froze someone was trying to get in! I grabbed my hockey stick and waited.
I heard voices. The front door slowly opened. I held the hockey stick upright. Fear made my
hands shake.
Then, a voice cried out,” Dullah! Dullah! Where are you?” It was my neighbour and his son.
They brought candles for me.

Human body is made up of countless millions of cells. Food is needed to built up new
cells and replace the worn out cells. However, the food that we take must be changed into
substances that can be carried in the blood to the places where they are needed. This process
is called digestion.
The first digestive process takes place in the mouth. The food we eat is broken up into
small pieces by the action of teeth, mixed with saliva, a juice secreted by glands in the mouth.
Saliva contains digestive juice which moisten the food, so it can be swallowed easily.
From the mouth, food passes through the esophagus (the food passage) into the
stomach. Here, the food is mixed with the juices secreted by the cells in the stomach for
several hours. Then the food enters the small intestine. All the time the muscular walls of the
intestine are squeezing, mixing and moving the food onwards.
In a few hours, the food changes into acids. These are soon absorbed by the villi (microscopic
branch projections from the intestine walls) and passed into the bloodstream.
