Rock and roll (sering ditulis sebagai rock & roll atau rock ‘n’ roll) adalah genre musik
populer yang berasal dan berkembang di Amerika Serikat selama akhir 1940-an dan
awal 1950-an, dari musik Afrika-Amerika seperti Gospel, jazz, dan rhythm and blues (R
& B), dengan Country. Sementara unsur rock and roll dapat didengar dalam rekaman
blues dari tahun 1920-an dan rekaman Country dari tahun 1930-an, genre rock n roll
tidak memperoleh namanya sampai tahun 1950-an. 

“Rock and roll” dapat merujuk baik untuk gelombang pertama musik yang berasal di
Amerika Serikat pada tahun 1950-an sebelum perkembangannya menjadi “musik rock”,
atau lebih luas musik rock dan Country.

Dalam rock and roll gaya awal tahun 1940-an dan awal 1950-an, baik piano atau
saxophone sering menjadi instrumen lead, tapi ini umumnya diganti atau dilengkapi
dengan gitar di tengah untuk akhir 1950-an. beat yang pada dasarnya adalah sebuah
ritme musik blues dengan backbeat menonjol. Klasik rock and roll biasanya dimainkan
dengan satu atau dua gitar listrik (satu Lead, satu rhytmn), bass elektrik, dan drum kit.
Rock n roll sangat terpengaruh oleh musik blues dan country, seperti sub-genre dari
blues, yaitu Boogie woogie. Dan lirik rock n roll yang terinspirasi dari jump blues.
Karena perkembangan rock and roll adalah proses evolusi, tidak ada rekaman tunggal
yang dapat diidentifikasi sebagai rekaman “pertama” rock and roll.

Musisi yang mempengaruhi awal rock and roll hit termasuk Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley,
Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, dan Gene Vincent. Chuck Berry tahun 1955 classic
“Maybellene” solo gitar listrik terdistorsi nada dengan hangat dibuat oleh amplifier katup
yang kecil. Namun, penggunaan distorsi yang mendahului blues listrik gitaris
seperti Joe Hill Louis, Willie Johnson band Howlin ‘Wolf, dan Pat Hare; dua terakhir juga
membuat penggunaan power chords terdistorsi di awal 1950-an. Juga pada tahun
1955, Bo Diddley memperkenalkan beat baru dan gaya gitar listrik yang unik, sangat
dipengaruhi oleh musik Afrika dan pada gilirannya mempengaruhi banyak seniman
kemudian.

Lyrics were about subjects such as young love, school, parents and cars. Rock 'n' roll
songs allowed young people an opportunity to express their emotions and experiences.

Many rock 'n' roll songs followed the 12 bar blues chord structure.

Rock N Roll, secara struktural kebanyakan memiliki bentuk musik sederhana, yaitu : bentuk
musik 2 bagian (twoo part song form) = A dan B. Berikut perbandingan bentuk struktur dalam
