Article

Artikel merupakan kata sandang yang diikuti oleh noun. Dalam Bahasa Inggris terdapat
dua jenis artikel yaitu :

1. Definite Aricle
2. Indefinite Article

1. Definite Article
Definite article adalah kata sandang untuk menunjukkan benda tertentu. Dalam Bahasa
Inggris digunakan artikel “ the”. Aturan dari pemakaian “the” dapat berupa:

1. Di depan sebuah kata yang telah disebutkan pada kalimat sebelumnya, misalnya:
- I saw a girl. The girl was sitting near the window
- She is reading a novel. The novel is very interesting
2. Di depan kata benda yang sudah pasti, misalnya :
- I want to read the books on the table
3. Di depan sebuah kata benda tunggal yang menunjukkan sebuah spesies atau
kelompok, misalnya :
- The tiger lives in Java (harimau hidup di jawa)
Kata tiger dalam hal di atas adalah spesies harimau yang hidup di Jawa
4. Di depan kata sifat yang digunakan sebagai kata benda, misalnya :
- They collected money to donate to the institution for the bling.
5. Di depan nama benda satu-satunya, misalnya :
- the sun rises in the east = matahari terbit di timur
- the moon is beautiful
- the earth is in danger

2. Indefinite Article
Indefinite article adalah kata sandang tak tentu atau benda yang dimaksud tidak pasti atau
secara general.. Dalam Bahasa Inggris kata sandang ini terdiri dari : a / an (indefinite
article). Penggunaan dari artikel ini adalah:
a. Artikel a digunakan di depan kata yang diawali dengan konsonan, misalnya : a man, a
boy, a teacher, a woman, dan sebagainya
 artikel an digunakan di depan kata-kata yang diawali dengan vocal atau huruf hidup atau
kata-kata yang diawali huruf h yang tidak disuarakan, misalnya an umbrella, an opinion,
an avocado, an apple, an egg, an island, an onion, an uncle, an hour dan sebagainya.
b. Artikel a/an digunakan didepan kata benda tunggal yang dapat dihitung, ketika kata
benda tersebut digunakan untuk pertama kalinya dan tidak menunjuk pada orang atau benda
tertentu, misalnya :
- I need a pen
- They live in a flat
- I bought a car
Penggunaan artikel a atau an di depan huruf “u” dan “h” tergantung pada cara
mengucapkan kata yang diawali dengan huruf “u” atau “h” tersebut : kalau diucapkan
sama seperti bunyi konsonan, maka artikel a bisa digunakan. Sebaliknya kalau diucapkan
seperti bunyi vocal, maka artikel an bisa digunakan, contoh :
- a university - an umbrella
- a horse - an hour
