Sementara ini komunitas OpenSUSE sedang sibuk-sibuknya mempersiapkan rilis openSUSE 11.2 bulan depan. Kami berkesempatan untuk mencoba mencari dan mengeksplorasi apa yang baru di openSUSE 11.2. Untuk itulah kami mendowload image RC1-nya. Singkat, cepat, stabil dan cantik, itulah openSUSE 11.2 RC1 (dan insyaallah OpenSUSE 11.2). Saya pikiri keputusan internal komunitas yang merilis versi baru tiap 8 bulan sekali sudah tepat dan memberikan kesempatan untuk mengeksplorasi dan membangun inovasi baru. Hmm, lebih berani saya katakan bahwa OpenSUSE 11.2 nantinya adalah distro KDE terbaik [walaupun saya ini mandrivian]. Dan inilah fitur bawaan openSUSE 11.2 yang saya anggap menarik: 1. Kernel linux 2.6.31 Kernel linux 2.6.31 adalah versi terbaru dari kernel Linux. Baru saja dirilis 9 september 2009 yang lalu dengan bawaan fitur-fitur baru dan perbaikan bug. OpenSUSE berani langsung meloncat dari kernel 2.6.27 ke 2.6.31, membuktikan kernel baru akan lebih cepat, aman dan banyak driver bawaan. 2. Filesystem ext4 Secara default openSUSE 11.2 akan memakai ext4 seperti kebanyakan distro besar dan baru lainnya. Ext4 sendiri merupakan suksesor dari ext3. 3. Live Upgrade Untuk pertama kalinya openSUSE menawarkan fitur Live Upgrade, mirip-mirip layanan dist-upgrade milik Debian. 4. YaST revamp YaST, tool control panel/center luar biasa dari openSUSE sudah dialihkan menggunakan QT4. Fitur barunya antara lain: AppArmor diinstall secara default, modul virtualisasi default terinstall, modul searching, modul partitioner sudah mendukung RAID6 dan RAID10.

5. YaST Interface web OpenSUSE 11.2 juga menampilkan YaST-nya dalam interface berbasis web. Secara objektif, YaST dengan interface web ini adalah trik untuk remote desktop 1:1. Interface berbasis web ini dibangun dengan Ruby on Rails.

6. Software Management yang lebih baik Zypper sebagai punggung software management di OpenSUSE telah diimprovisasi luar biasa. Sekarang Zypper mempunyai reliabilitas kecepatan download lebih baik. Selain itu, kita juga bisa mendownload dulu paket software yang akan diinstall. Pencarian di Repo juga diperbaiki dengan interface Webpin, a la 1-click install. Zypper baru:

7. KDE 4.3 Inilah edisi terbaru KDE yang luar biasa. OpenSUSE dan KDE 4.3 adalah versi desktop modern (yang menurut saya) sempurna untuk menandingi Vista atau 7 Sekalipun. 8. Integrasi KDE-Firefox Tim pengembang KDE di openSUSE telah mengintegrasikan paket Firefox terintegrasi otomatis dengan setting KDE. 10. Social Desktop openSUSE 11.2 membawa social network didalamnya, seperti Twitter dan Facebook. Firefox menjadi raja disini, karena firefox dipakai sebagai basisnya. Aplikasi tersebut antara lain: Choqok, Kopete dan Social Plasmoids.
