Diarrhea is still a major health problem due to its high morbidity and mortality ,
especially in infants. Early giving of complementary foods contribute to the
occurence of diarrhea because the infants consumed less breast milk and had
immunity factors deficiency. Based on the fact, its necessary to conduct a study
about the relationship between early giving of complementary food (daktau apo
istilahnyo) and diarrhea in infants.
This is an analytic observational study with cross sectional design. The population
is all infants aged 2-6 months who come to the health centers and posyandu(?) at
Sekip region in November and December 2015. Consecutive sampling method is
used to choose the mothers who will fill the questionnaire. Inclusion criteria for
the study are infants aged 2-6 months, parents knows the history of diarrhea in the
last two months, and willing to fill out a questionnaire. Exclusion criteria for the
study was premature infants receive infant formula and had a history of surgery on
the digestive tract.
In the study of 110 infants, obtained 23 infants (20.9%) who got complementary
food early. Among the 23 infants who received complementary foods early, 15 of
them (65.2%) had a history of diarrhea. From bivariate analysis using chi square
obtained p value for the relationship between early giving of complementary food
and diarrhea is 0.000 (p <0.05) and OR value as big as 18,516 with CI 95%
(6,013-37,019).
There is a significant correlation between the early giving of complementary food
and diarrhea in infants aged 2 to 6 months at health centers and posyandu in Sekip
Region Palembang.
