Abstract
Pila - Pila (Mallotus paniculatus) is a shrub that is empirically used as antioxidant.
Antioxidants are compounds that may delay, prevent or slow the oxidation reaction.
Reseacrh has been done the isolation of compounds and the antioxidant test of pila-
pila leaves. This study aims to find the best eluent by thin layer chromatography and
determine the antioxidant activity of these compounds. As many as 10,0 g of pila-pila
leaves methanol extract fractionated by solid – liquid method and obtained fraction of
ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and methanol. Antioxidant test of the fraction using a radical
antioxidant 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) 100 ppm. Isolation of etil asetat
fraction by column chromatography method using some type of eluent, such N-
hexane:ethyl acetate (9:1;8:2;7:3), chloroform:methanol (9:1;8:2;7:3;6:4;5:5), and
methanol. From this isolation obtained 14 sub fractions. In sub-fraction of 1 to 9 (FP1
- FP9) are crystal with best eluent is N-hexane:ethyl acetate (FP1=40:1 (Rf=0.55);
FP2=40:1 (Rf=0.71); FP3=20:1 (Rf=0.88); FP4=20:1 (Rf=0.44); FP5=15:1
(Rf=0.67); FP6=15:1 (Rf=0,55); FP7=10:1 (Rf=0.55); FP8=9:1 (Rf=0.73); FP9=9:1
(Rf=0.67)). FP1, FP2, FP3, FP4 and FP7 have antioxidant activity which is
characterized by the formation of yellow stain on a TLC plate with a purple
background.
