 1. Pengertian/ Definition
Definition
News item is a text which informs
readers about events of the day.
The events are considered newsworthy or
important. It means if there is an important
event that should be known by many people.
News item text adalah sebuah teks bahasa
Inggris yang menceritakan suatu kejadian
atau peristiwa penting dengan bentuk
menyerupai berita, atau layak untuk
dijadikan berita (news).
Purpose
To inform readers about events of the
day which are considered newsworthy
or important
News item text bertujuan untuk
memberikan informasi kepada pembaca
tentang suatu kejadian atau peristiwa
penting yang bernilai.
2. Characteristic of news item

Characteristic
A. Isi teks berfokus kepada suatu kejadian
atau peristiwa penting
B .Bahasa yang digunakan singkat namun
padat
C. Terkadang diawali dengan nama kota atau
nama media yang menerbitkan.
Misal Jakarta - …
D. Biasanya disertai gambar/ilustrasi serta
judul (headline) yang mendeskripsikan inti
peristiwa.
3. Generic structure

Structure
A. Main event/Newsworthy events
Main event adalah paragraf yang berisi tentang
ringkasan dari suatu peristiwa, alias kejadian
penting yang menjadi highlight untuk disampaikan
pada pembaca.
B. Elaboration/Background Event
Background event ini berisi latar belakang
peristiwa yang terjadi.
C. Resource of Information (Source)
Source, yaitu bagian yang berisi tentang
pendapat para ahli atau saksi mata.
4. Language features

A. Using simple past tense

Simple past tense adalah bentuk kalimat
untuk mengungkapkan suatu kejadian di masa
lampau. Sometimes news item text juga bisa
ditulis dengan simple present tense untuk
menceritakan sebuah fakta yang masih
berlanjut hingga masa kini.
C. Using action verbs
Action verbs atau dynamic verbs
adalah kata kerja yang merujuk pada
suatu tindakan yang terlihat oleh
orang lain.

B. Using saying verbs

Saying verbs adalah kata kerja yang
identik terjadi pada aktivitas
percakapan.
Contoh dari saying verbs yaitu, respond,
say, answer, ask, reply, inquire, tell, etc
D. Using adverbs: time, place, manner
Adverbs adalah kata keterangan
yang menjelaskan kata kerja, kata
sifat, atau kata yang lainnya.

Town Contaminated
(Main Event)
Moscow – A Russian journalist has uncovered evidence of another Soviet nuclear catastrophe,
whichkilled10 sailors and contaminated an entire town.

(Background Event)
Yelena Vazrshavskya is the first journalist to speak to people who witnessed the explosion of a
nuclear submarine at the naval base of shkotovo – 22 near Vladivostock.

The accident, which occurred 13 months before the Chernobyl disaster, spread radio active fall-
out over the base and nearby town, but was covered up by officials of the Soviet Union.
Residents were told the explosion in the reactor of the Victor-class submarine during a refit had
been a ‘thermal’ and not a nuclear explosion. And those involved in the clean up operation to
remove more than 600 tones of contaminated material were sworn to secrecy.
