Roro Jonggrang

Once upon a time, there was a kingdom named Pengging. The people lived
peacefully because the king governed his country wisely. Pengging kingdom had
a prince named Bandung Bondowoso. He was very handsome. Meanwhile, The
king of Prambanan Kingdom, Prabu Boko, governed his nation sarcasticly and
rudely. But, he had a very beautiful daughter named Roro Jonggrang.

One day, Pengging Kingdom started the war to Prambanan Kingdom, because the
king of Prambanan was a giant and always ate the human being. The war between
Prambanan and Pengging could not be avoided. Pengging could win the war
because Bandung Bondowoso had a supernatural power. Bandung Bondowoso’s
soldiers were not only humans but also genies. Those creatures always obeyed
him. They always did whatever he asked them to do. Prambanan lost the war and
of course Bandung Bandowoso had killed the king of Prambanan.

The king of Prambanan had a beautiful daughter named Roro Jonggrang. Bandung
Bondowoso fell in love with her and wanted to marry her.

“You’re very beautiful. Would you be my queen?” asked Bandung Bondowoso.

Roro Jonggrang who asked for a marriage by Bondowoso, she was very confused.
She was really hate Bondowoso for killing her beloved father, but she was afraid
that Bandung Bondowoso would be angry if she rejected the proposal. Finally,
after a sort time of thinking, Roro Jonggrang found a way to cancel the marriage.

“If you want to marry me, you have to build a thousand of temples for me in just
one night,” said Roro Jonggrang.

But Bandung Bondowoso did not give up. So, Bandung Bondowoso summoned
his entire genies soldier and commanded them to help him built a thousand
temples. The night is still long, but the temple is almost finished. Roro Jonggrang
was so worried. “What can i do?”. But again, she came up with a great idea. She
asked all of her servants to prepare a lot of straw and mortar. All those servants
did what Roro Jonggrang said; burning the straw and pounding the mortar.

The genies think that the sun is going to rise. All the genies immediately stopped
their work and ran for cover from the sun, which they afraid of. They didn’t know
that the light was from the fire that burning the straw, not from the sun. Bandung
Bondowoso can’t stop the genies from leaving. He was angry. He knew Roro
Jonggrang had just tricked him. So he came to Roro Jonggrang and said “You
cannot fool me, Roro Jonggrang. I already have 999 temples. I just need one more
temple. Now, I will make you the one thousandth temple.” Bandung Bondowoso
with his supernatural power said the curse. The curse worked, and Roro
Jonggrang directly turned into a statue that fulfilled the thousand temples.

From then, people called the statue of Roro Jonggrang as Roro Jonggrang temple,
and the other temples called Candi Sewu, or thousand temples. Until now, the
tamples are still standing in Prambanan area, Central Java.

MORAL VALUE

The moral value that we can get from this story is

Think about other people’s feelings, do not just think of yourself Like Bandung
Bandowoso, he forced Roro jonggarang to marry him. He didn’t think about Roro
