READING COMPREHENSION

Read the following text to answer question 1-5

Lowering births is the unambiguous object of government policy, especially in the developing countries.
Increasing populations press on the environment and its resources, take away profits from the capital
available for new investment, crowd cities with 5 people for whom jobs are not available, and cause political
turmoil. After a period of uncertainty government have become aware that national power and individual
welfare are more likely to be attained with fewer people.

Contraceptive measures are feely available in most countries and are actively promoted in many. Such
promotion has little effect when people want large families. However, when the modern ways of live have
come into play and people want small families promotion or birth control speeds the decline of the birth rate.
Typically, the better off take up family limitation first. Governmental sponsorship of birth control and
foreign aid makes contraceptives available to the poor. This apparently helps to spread the practice of family
limitation among ever wider strata of the population. Recent surveys in Colombia, Indonesia and other
places with active programs point to a more rapid decline in birthrates than had previously been though
possible.

16. Read the following text to answer question 6-10

17. In early societies, money was unknown and man relied on a simple system of exchange. Perhaps a good
hunter had more animal skins than he could use. His neighbor, a good fisherman, might have too many
fish but needed furs to protect his children from the cold. Both soon realized that their problems could be
easily solved by exchanging what they did not need, their surplus, for what they did need.

18.

19. This method of exchanging something that is not needed for something that is needed is called barter.
The word comes from the Italian "barattare" and the French "Barater" which mean "to trade" Barter was
an important means of exchange when the needs of primitive man were mostly for clothing, food, and
shelter. But the system had many problems. For example, a weaver who wanted to exchange his cloth for
a good catch of fish might not be able to find a fisherman who needed cloth. And the farmer with too
much corn might not be able to find a hunter with too many deer. When labor and services became more
specialized in growing societies, barter no longer satisfied the demands of payment. A new system of
exchange had to be found.

20. As man developed, he turned to many different things in his search for a convenient medium of
exchange, or money. One of the earliest forms of money was cattle. The richest man was the one who
owned the most livestock. His cattle were called "capitale" and from that Latin word we get our word
capital meaning wealth.

into museums. Steamships have lost against motor vehicles. Diesel locomotives have driven steam
locomotive off the rails. Jet planes using aviation fuel fly the skies, making remote places reachable in a
matter of hours.

That oil is oil indispensible to our everyday lives is not an exaggeration either. Yet few of us ever ask
how his important liquid is extracted from the earth and changed into finished products. in the first
place, it is not an easy matter to find an oil reserve. Exploration teams, sent by oil companies, have to go
to remote place, and sometimes have to live under harsh conditions, to explore the earth or seabed for
oil. Team members study the rocks and the soil, and if there are promising results, the next thing for the
oil company to do is to send a drilling team to location. Again this is not a simple matter.
60.
Roads for examples, have to be built first to transport the men and materials to the site. What is worse,
the first drilling does not always bring about oil. The drilling team often has to drill up to ten wells
before oils found.

The oil comes out from the well is still crude of course. It is first gathered in field storage tanks through
pipelines. From here another pipeline carries it directly to a refinery the crude oil is broken down into a
number of finished products such as gasoline (petrol) kerosen (parafin), diesel oil, and lubricant. Further

132. There are millions of plants and animals living in the sea. Most of the plants and animals living in the
oceans are extremely small and float near the surface of the water in their thousands. They are food for
huge numbers of small animals that also live near the surface. Together, they are all known as plankton.

133. Many fish feed on this plankton, including one of the largest, the whale shark. Despite their great
size, certain whales live entirely on plankton.

134. The blue whale is the largest animal ever to live. It grows to a length of over 100 feet. The humpback
whale is a smaller kind and has long flippers. It can jump right out the water. The Californian grey whale
makes long migrations every year - it spends the summer feeding in the Arctic but swims south to the
warmer waters off the coast of Mexico in the winter. The females give birth in the shallow, warm water
there.

culture. Many North Americans and Europeans are used to having three mealtimes a day and organizing
their timetable around them. In some countries, on the other hand, people often do not have strict rules

example. When they are used in power stations, a great deal of smoke is produced. The smoke contains a
great deal of acid. Even if the smoke is cleaned by filters, a lot of the acid still escapes into the air. This
can be carried by clouds from power stations in England to Scandinavia. When it rains there, the acid
comes down with the rain. As a result, the fish, in lakes and trees in forests begin to die.

289. But many people are still against nuclear power. They believe that the problem is not just the danger
of an accident in the atomic power stations. Highly radioactive material is used. Radioactivity can cause
cancer and other illnesses. Only a part of the material is used. The rest - called waste - is just as

potential anticancer agent. That's a new finding from preliminary data from ARS collaborative studies
with Rutgers University-New Jersey and AgCanada, Kentville, Nova Scotia. Resveratrol protects dark-
skinned bunch grapes from fungal diseases and provides health benefits to consumers, including
protection from cardiovascular disease. The compound's anticancer potential warranted its examination
in other fruits.
458. Using gas chromatographic and mass spectrometric procedures, the scientists measured the
resveratrol content of 30 whole fruit samples of blueberry, cranberry, huckleberry, and related plants
representing 5 families and 10 species of Vaccinium . fruit. They found that several samples contained
varying amounts of the compound. Analysis of extracts of the skin, juice/pulp, and seed of muscadine
grapes showed that its concentration in fruit skin was highest. Levels in the juice/pulp were much lower

470. The interior design is what really sets the Japanese traditional house. With the exception of the entry
way (genkan), the kitchen (daidokoro), the bathing room (sento) and the' toilet (benjo), the rooms in a
Japanese traditional house does not have a designated use.
471. A room can easily be a living area, a bedroom, a dining room or any combination. Large rooms are
partitioned by fusuma, sliding doors made of wood and thick paper. The paper used for fusuma is called
washi. These sliding doors can be removed whenever a larger space is needed.
472. In large traditional houses, there was one large room, or ima (living space) that could be divided as
needed. The smaller rooms like kitchen, bath and toilet were small extensions to one side. Rouka, or
wooden-floored hallways, follow the edge of the home. Windows are made of wood and shoji paper,
which is thin enough to let the light shine through.

of boys and girls, men and women are already up and busy. But they are not working or going anywhere.
They are exercising. Some are playing football or badminton and some others are jogging. What is
jogging?

696. Jogging is a gentle running. Why is jogging so popular today? Why do people jog? People jog to
relax themselves, to keep themselves fit, or simply to enjoy themselves. Our world today is a world
where life is comfortable and easy for many city people. Fast buses, cars, or motorcycles take us to work
or to school. Lifts carry us quickly from one floor to another in large buildings. So many people get very
little exercise.
697. What do you need to start jogging? You only need a pair of running shoes, an old pair of jeans or
shorts, a sweater and a little courage. Dont be embarrassed if you meet your neighbor as you return
home, hot and tired. When you begin jogging, start by running some of the way and then walking. Don't
jog too far to begin with and jog slowly. Once you develop a regular jogging program, you will feel feet
and well, and you will be ready to start a busy day feeling fresh and awake.

698. Next time you are at a swimming pool, look the people around you, especially those who are over

710. Male Chauvinism (men belief in male superiority) extends even into the area of automobile driving,

incompetent, inattentive, and even dangerous behind the wheel

are really just being safe drivers.
