Around hal Europe’s buildings were built be ore 1975. Some have ar hite tural value,
others less so, but many hide an ugly reality. According to Emilio Pizzi, at the Politecnico di Milano
University, the buildings were built in a time when energy parameters like efficiency, consumption
and emissions were not a top priority. So there was a strong need to transform and update the
thermal per orman es o Europe’s ar hitectural heritage. He added that it is time to innovate new
systems, to retrofit these buildings with energy efficiency in mind.
The researchers have developed new insulation materials to make old buildings more
energy efficient, in terms of their facades, wall cavities and interiors. Karim Ghazi Wakili, a
physicist with EMPA Research Institute, showed Euro News three prototypes. The first is insulation
material made mainly out of three layers of polyester fibers. They are supposed to have the highest
thermal insulation. The next material has only one layer of polyester fibers. It has two textiles on
both sides. he third material is the heapest one. It is made out o a material alled ‘perlite’. It is
thicker because perlite has higher thermal conductivity.
Gabriele Masera, a building engineer at Politecnico di Milano University states that the
researchers have tested these materials in a building of the Politecnico de Milano University in Italy.
It was built in 1965. The inner walls of one room were covered with sensors and fitted with the
three prototypes of insulation materials. The sensors measure temperature, humidity and heat flow
at three different places: outside the building – that is why we have sensors installed on the facade –
in the cavity walls, and finally on the inner surface of the walls.
Outside sensors also measure radiation and wind speed. This way we are able to see how much
heat leaks from the different materials in building. All the data will help us build a mathematical model
that will allow us to understand how each material reacts to different climatic conditions.
Magnetti Building in Milan, which makes re-fabricated kits for retrofitting exterior facades,
is the kind of company the research aims at. Insulation materials developed by researchers will be
included in some of its kits, which can be customized.
Director of Operations Marco Predo believes the market is ready for such solutions,
provided they come at a competitive price. In recent years, we have seen data that seems to prove
that the market or retro itting a ades and e isting buildings is indeed on the rise. So we’re quite
optimistic indeed about the market prospects for these new insulation materials.
The researchers hope their new insulation solutions could become an affordable market
reality in around four or five years.
79. Whi h o the ollowing senten es indi ates the author’s bias in the passage?
(A) Insulation materials will be included in some of the kits.
(B) They are supposed to have the highest thermal insulation.
(C) The sensors measure temperature, humidity, and heat at three different places.
(D) All the data will help us build a mathematical model to understand the material.
(E) Some buildings have architectural values, other less so, but many hide an ugly reality.
In rared radiation is popularly known as “heat radiation,” but light and ele tromagneti
waves of any frequency will heat surfaces that absorb them. Infrared light from the Sun only
accounts for 49% of the heating of the Earth, with the rest being caused by visible light that is
absorbed then re-radiated at longer wavelengths. Visible light or ultraviolet-emitting lasers can char
paper and incandescently hot objects emit visible radiation. Objects at room temperature will emit
radiation mostly concentrated in the 8 to 25 µm band, but this is not distinct from the emission of
visible light by incandescent objects and ultraviolet by even hotter objects.
Heat is energy in transient form that flows due to temperature difference. Unlike heat
transmitted by thermal conduction or thermal convection, radiation can propagate through a
vacuum. Thermal radiation is characterized by a particular spectrum of many wave lengths that is
associated with emission from an object, due to the vibration of its molecules at a given
temperature. Thermal radiation can emitted from objects at any wavelengths, and at very high
temperatures such radiations are associated with spectra far above the infrared, extending into
visible, ultraviolet, and even X-ray regions (i.e., the solar corona). Thus, the popular association of
infrared radiation with thermal radiation is only a coincidence based on typical (comparatively low)
temperatures often found near the surface of planet Earth.
The concept of emissivity is important in understanding the infrared emissions of objects.
This is a property of a surface which describes how its thermal emissions deviate from the ideal of a
black body. To further explain, two objects at the same physical temperature will not “appear” the
same temperature in an infrared image if they have differing emissivities.
83. In presenting the idea, the writer starts his writing by ...
(A) defining the main idea
(B) explaining the topic
(C) describing the process
(D) depicting the condition
(E) experimenting the study
86. The following statements undermine about the in ormation taken rom the te t, e ept …
(A) Heat and thermal radiation have the exactly same characteristics
(B) The popular association of infrared radiation with thermal radiation which is only based on
typical temperatures hardly found near the surface of planet Earth
(C) Thermal radiation can be emitted from objects at a certain wavelength
(D) Objects at room temperature and ultraviolet by hotter objects will emit radiation
concentrated mostly in the same amount
(E) Light and electromagnetic waves of any frequency cannot be absorbed by an object
TEXT A
The auto industry is a key component of the U.S. economy. Economists used 2007–2008
data to build estimates of what a shutdown would cost in summer 2008, in order to set benchmarks
to help policy makers understand the impact of bankruptcies. Such estimates were widely discussed
among policy makers in late 2008. Closing the Big Three would mean loss of 240,000 very highly
paid jobs at the Big Three, a loss of 980,000 highly paid jobs at the suppliers and local dealers, plus
the loss of 1.7 million additional jobs throughout the economy—a total loss of 3 million jobs.
Estimates were that a Big Three shutdown would cause a decline in personal income of
$151 billion the first year, and $398 billion over three years. The federal, state and local
governments would lose tax revenue, and instead spend on welfare programs a total of $156 billion
over three years.
Economist David Wyss of S&P has posited that if GM and Chrysler disappear, there could
be an increase of about 1 million imported cars every year, which would remove about $25 billion
from the U.S. economy. That would reduce GDP by 0.2 percentage points annually—excluding the
impact of lost jobs (higher unemployment) and wages.
TEXT B
In a November 19, 2008 CNBC article, Jordan Kimmel, a fund manager at Magnet
Investing in Randolph, New Jersey, said that if the Big Three automakers were liquidated or
completely shut down, foreign companies such as Honda and Toyota would open up new
manufacturing plants in the U.S., and there would be no long term loss in employment or damage to
the economy.
Michael Schuman of Time Magazine stated that although a giant corporation failing would be ugly,
it is better than artificially keeping it alive without a prospect of improvement. He compared the
possible collapse of the U.S. domestic automakers to the 1999 dismantling of the Daewoo Group in
South Korea. Daewoo's proportionate economic impact on Korea was larger than that of the Big
Three to the United States. The persistence of the belief that Daewoo and other Korean
conglomerates were too big to fail led many bankers and investors to continually waste money on
bailouts, despite their poor business plans and unprofitable projects, as Daewoo was unable to repay

(A) The possibility loss of 3 million jobs caused by the closing of the Big Three
(B) The closing of the Big Three and the increase imported cars will reduce GDP by 0.2
