Ali and Isa are talking on the phone. Ali is excited. Soon he is going to see his cousin,
Isa. Isa is from Jeddah. He is just a little older than Ali.

Ali : Isa, how will I know you when I see you ?

Isa : I’ve got curly brown hair, Ali

Ali : My hair is dark, but it is straight

Isa : See you soon! Goodbye!

Ali dan Isa berbicara di telepon. Ali sangat senang. Beberapa waktu lagi dia akan
bertemu sepupunya, Isa. Isa dari Jeddah. Dia hanya sedikit lebih tua dari Ali.

Ali and Isa have a good time. They take the bus to the city and they go to the fair. After
a week, it is time to say goodbye. The two boys are sad. They take pictures before Isa
has to go.

Isa : I had so much fun with you!

Ali : I wish you didn’t have to go

Isa : Come here! Let’s go in and take pictures!

Ali : Now I can see you whenever I want to!

Ali dan Isa memiliki waktu yang menyenangkan. Mereka naik bis ke kota dan pergi

That afternoon, the two cousins go to the zoo. They like the hippos and the elephants.
They love the monkeys! Then they go into a building where it is dark. Ali sees a big, long
snake. He gets scared and jump.

Ali : It’s a snake! I’m scared of snakes! Are you?

Isa : No, We’ve got longer snakes where I live

Ali : Can we go now?

Isa : Don’t be afraid. Hold my hand.

Sore itu, kedua sepupu itu pergi ke kebun binatang. Mereka menyukai kuda nil dan

One day, Joha got up early and left his house with six donkeys. He was tired, so he
rode on one of the donkeys. After a time, he counted the donkeys:”one…two…three…
four…five .” There were only five! So he got off his donkey and looked for the sixth
donkey. He walked back along the road, but it wasn’t there. He went back again to his
donkeys and counted them again. There were six! He did not understand, but he was
happy. He got on to his donkey, and they all started again.

Suatu hari, Joha bangun pagi lebih awal dan meninggalkan rumahnya bersama 6
keledainya. Dia sangat Lelah, sehingga dia naik ke salah satu keledainya. Setelah
beberapa waktu, dia menghitung jumlah keledainya:”satu…dua…tiga...empat…
lima”.Cuma ada lima! Dia turun dari keledainya dan mencari keledai ke-enam. Dia
berjalan kembali menyusuri jalan, tetapi tidaklah ada. Dia kembali lagi ke keledai-
keledainya dan menghitungnya lagi. Ada 6! Dia tidak mengerti, tetapi dia bahagia. Dia
naik ke keledainya, dan mereka memulainya kembali (hal ini terjadi lagi).

After a time, he counted them again, and there were only five again! Then he met his
friend. He said to his friend, “I had six donkeys when I left my house. Now I only have
five.” His friend said ,”You are sitting on one of the donkeys. You forgot to count that
one! That is the sixth donkey, and you are the seventh donkey!”

Selang beberapa waktu ,dia menghitung mereka kembali (keledai), dan hanya ada lima
lagi! Kemudian bertemu dengan temannya. Dia berkata kepada temannya “Saya punya
enam keledai ketika saya meninggalkan rumah saya. Sekarang saya hanya punya lima”.
Temannya berkata “Kau duduk di salah satu keledai itu. Kau lupa menghitung yang itu!
Itulah keledai ke-enam, dan kamulah keledai ke-tujuh!

Sami’s Thursday Morning : Hari Kamis paginya Sami

Sami usually sleeps late at the weekend, but today he got up early.

“Good morning,” said Mother. “I’m going shopping now. Father is in the study working
on the computer. After breakfast, please wash the dishes and take out the rubbish. After
I come back we’ll have lunch.”

Sami biasanya tidur larut saat akhir pekan, tetapu dia bangun lebih awal.

“Selamat pagi” kata Ibu. “Saya pergi belanja sekarang. Ayah sedang mempelajari
sesuatu di komputer. Setelah sarapan, tolong cucilah piring dan bawalah sampah
ke luar. Setelah aku (ibu) kembali kita akan makan siang.”

Sami said goodbye to his mother. Then he went back to the kitchen. Surprise! His
breakfast was on the table – an egg sandwich. What a nice surprise, but what a mess!

“Hello,” someone said. Sami had never seen him before.

“Who are you?” Sami asked.

“My name is Robby the Robot,” he said. “I made you a sandwich. Enjoy it!”

“Thank you,” said Sami

Sami mengucapkan selamat tinggal ke ibunya. Kemudian dia kembali ke dapur.


Kejutan! Sarapannya di meja – sebuah sandwich telur. Kejutan yang menarik, tetapi
sangat kacau!

“Halo,” kata seseorang. Sami tidak pernah melihatnya sebelumnya

After Sami ate the sandwich he said,

“Delicious sandwich! Thanks. Now I’m going to wash the dishes and take out the
rubbish”

“That’s no fun,” Robby said. “Let’s play a game!” So they played football. It was fun, but
what a mess Robby made.

Setelah Sami makan sandwichnya dia berkata,

“Sandwich yang lezat ! Terima kasih. Sekarang saya akan mencuci piring dan
mengeluarkan sampah”

“Itu tidak menyenangkan” kata Robby. “ Mari bermain permainan!” Lalu mereka bermain

Then Robby said, “Your mother is home! Run and meet her. Then come back”

When Sami and Mother got back to the kitchen, Robby was not there. But the kitchen
was clean, clean and clean.

One lettuce. Majdy was writing the shopping list. He put it on the fridge. He dropped
down onto his chair.

“I miss Father,” he said.

Majdy’s father opened a new restaurant in the city last week. He always worked in the
day. Now he worked some nights, too. Majdy hoped to see the new restaurant soon.

Satu selada. Majdy menulis daftar belanja. Dia menempelkannya di kulkas. Dia duduk

“Saya rindu Ayah,” katanya

Talal plays baseball dan is in the swimming team at his school. So he needs to take care
himself. Talal says you can do many things to take care of yourself.

When you play baseball, you should stretch before every match. Talal says you shouldn’t
drink much water just before a match. When he did, he got stomachache.

Mohammed dan talal suka olahraga. Ketika mereka latihan (berolahraga), mereka
merasa sehat dan senang. Bagaimana mereka melakukannya? Mari kita perhatikan

Talal bermain baseball dan juga merupakan anggota tim renang. Jadi dia perlu menjaga
dirinya. Talal berkata kau dapat melakukan banyak hal maka jagalah dirimu

Ketika kau bermain baseball, kamu harus peregangan (pemanasan) sebelum setiap

Why do people dig up and study fossils? Because that is how we learn about life
on Earth millions of years ago. People usually find fossils in layers of rock. Some
fossils are bones that became hard as rock. Others are footprints or other marks
made in mud by animal or plants. Over many years, the mud changed into rock.

A guide told us about the city long ago.
“Who knows who lived here then?” he asked.
“Was it the Spanish?” I asked.
“Yes,” he said, “but the tribe of Caribes lived here first. The Spanish came in the
1500s and built many of the buildings you can see today.”

Kevin hung up the watering can. He put the spade away. He was helping his father to

“I know what I am going to be one day,” he told him

“What you are going to be?” Father asked

“I am going to be King of Calendar,” Kevin said

The City Mouse and Country Mouse

One day a City Mouse came to visit Country Mouse. The Country Mouse slept under a
log in a nest of dry grass. He ate cereal and a little fruit. The City Mouse thought life in
the country was very dull. He missed the rich food and exciting life of the city. So he
invinted the Country Mouse to visit him in the city.

Late that night entered the house of the City Mouse through a hole in the wall. On the
dining room table, they found food left from a big meal. The Country Mouse thought
the food was delicious! He ate and ate.

Suddenly a cat jumped onto the table. As the mice ran to the hole, the cat almost
caught the Country Mouse.

The fightened Country Mouse decided city life was just too dangerous. He went back to
the country, where life was dull, but safe.

How can you make this story into a puppet show

Anansi and Turtle

One day Turtle stopped to rest at the house of Anansi the Spider. Turtle was
tired and hungry. It was dinnertime, but Anansi didn’t want to share his food.
Anansi saw that Turtle had dirty feet, so he sent him to the lake to wash
before dinner. Anansi then ate all the food.
When Turtle returned, there no food left for him. He was hungry as he left.
But he invinted Anansi to visit him some day.
Months later, Anansi came to see Turtle. Turtle invinted Anansi to dinner. He
then went to his underwater home to make a meal.
Anansi put rocks his coat to make himself heavier. He jumped into the water
and swam down to Turtle’s home. Turtle asked Anansi to take off his coat
before he ate. When Anansi took of the coat, he floated up to the top of the
lake. Turtle smiled and ate all of the food

feet. And he was very proud of how fast he ran.

“No one can catch me.” Rabbit said. “ I’m wonderful. Wonderful!”

“He is terrible,” said Mouse

“Awful!” said Spider.”But what we can do?”

“I know what to do,” said Turtle

“Would you like to have a race?” Turtle asked Rabbit.

“Lets race to Big Rock.”

“Do I want to race? With you?” Rabbit laughed. “You are dirty, dull turtle. A slow turtle.”

Turtle smiled. “I can win,” he said. Rabbit stopped laughing.

“Let’s go!” he said.

They ran.

Rabbit was fast. He left Turtle behind in no time. Then he saw a restaurant, “I’m hungry,”
he thought. “And that turtle is slow. I’ve got time for dinner.”

Rabbit ate delicious meal of fruit, cheese and cake.

Turtle went past the restaurant. He didn’t stop. But Rabbit caught up with him later and
left him behind again.

Rabbit felt a little tired then. He found a log. He decided to crawl in. He slept.

Turtle did not stop. He went past the log. He was slow, but he ran and he ran.

Suddenly Rabbit opened his eyes. He jumped up. He ran faster than before. But he was
too late.

The Turtle was slow, but he did not stop.

He did not give up. And he won!

Put on the show!

Work with your partner. First, make stick puppets.

1. One partner should cut out the picture of Anansi the Spider on page 109. The
other partner should cut out Turtle on pager 110.
2. Use the cut-outs to make the front sides of the puppets. Trace each cut-out on
heavy paper or card to make a back. Cut out each back.
3. Colour the two sides of your puppet.
4. Lay a flat stick between the sides and glue them together

Second, get the stage ready. Look at page 84 to see how the curtain and scenery can be
made.

2. Make or collect scenery for Act 1 and Act 2. You can change the scenery between

Third, practice your puppet show with your partner.
