Article merupakan kata sandang yang digunakan didepan kata benda

Ada dua macam article dalam bahasa Inggris yaitu article a/an (indefinite) dan article the
(definite).

Definite Articles (The)

Definite articles dapat digunakan pada berbagai variasi kalimat. Variasi-variasi

penggunaan definite articles adalah seperti berikut:

 Article the digunakan untuk menunjukkan tempat, laut, dan wilayah

Contoh
 The Bali island
 The classroom
 The parking lot

 Article the digunakan untuk kata-kata dalam bentuk kata pembanding

Contoh:
 the highest . . .
 the best . . .
 the smallest . . .

 Article the digunakan untuk menunjukkan kelompok orang, bangsa, etnis, suku,
dan sejenisnya.
Contoh:
 the Javanese
 the European
 the Aborigin

 Article the digunakan untuk nomor urut.

Contoh:
 the first
 the second
 the third

 Article the digunakan untuk nama-nama keluarga, marga, klan, dan sejenisnya
Contoh:
 The Simorangkir
 The Uciha
 The Wijaya

 Article the digunakan untuk nama-nama benda yang hanya diketahui hanya ada
satu.
Contoh:
 The Jupiter
 The Ka’bah
 The Gedung Sate
  Article the digunakan untuk menunjukkan tempat berdasarkan arah.
Contoh:
 The west
 The east
 The south

Indefinite Article (A/An)

Indefinite article ada dua macam yaitu article “a” dan article “an”. Kata “a” dan “an” memiliki
arti sebuah atau seorang.

Article “a” digunakan untuk kata benda tunggal yang diawali oleh huruf konsonan atau
dimulai dengan bunyi konsonan.
Contohnya seperti: a cat, a duck, a house, a bike, a university.

Article “an” digunakan untuk kata benda tunggal yang diawali oleh huruf vokal atau dimulai
dengan bunyi vokal.
Contohnya seperti: an egg, an island, an hour, an umbrella.

Ada beberapa variasi dalam penggunaan indefinite article (a/an) yaitu seperti berikut:

 Article a/an digunakan didepan nama pekerjaan, gelar, jabatan, atau pangkat.
Contoh:
 a fisherman
 a president
 a professor

 Article a/an digunakan sebelum nama suku, etnis, daerah, atau bangsa
Contoh:
 a Singaporean
 a Sundanese
 an American

 Article a/an digunakan di depan nama agama atau kepercayaan.

Contoh:
 a Christian
 a Buddhist
 a Moslem

 Article a/an digunakan untuk kata benda tunggal (singular noun) yang dapat
dihitung
Contoh:
 We have a pencil
 I got a bag
 They need a book

 Article a/an dapat digunakan untuk penulisan jumlah tertentu dari

Contoh:
 a cup of coffee
 a couple of cats
 a gallon of water
 Article a/an dapat digunakan untuk menyatakan sifat pada kalimat seru
