Articles atau dalam bahasa Indonesia disebut dengan Kata Sandang masih
menjadi sesuatu yang asing bagi sebagian kalangan pelajar dilingkungan sekitar
kita. tidak sedikit diantara kita yang belum mengrtahui mengenai istilah yang satu
ini, bahkan mungkin ada yang baru mendengar atau membacanya.

What Are Articles?

A, An dan the (articles) adalah kata sandang yang digunakan untuk membatasi
pengertian dari kata benda (Noun). Artikel juga adalah kata
sandang yang digunakan untuk memodifikasi kata
benda, orang, tempat,atau ide atau sebuah gagsan.

Secara teknis, artikel adalah kata sifat (Adjective) , yang

dapat memodifikasi kata benda. Biasanya kata
sifat mengubah katamelalui deskripsinya, Ada beberapa jenis artikel yang
dapat kita gunakandalam penulisan dan percakapan untuk menunjukkan atau m
erujuk kepadakata atau kelompok kata. artcle itu antara lain: Definite articles.
indefinite articles, zero articles dan ( The with All, Unnecessary Definite Article).

Kinds of Articles (Jenis Articles)

Berikut adalah jenis artikel bahasa Inggris yang sering digunakan dalam kalimat.

 Definite Article: The

 Indefinite Articles: A and An
 Zero Article
 [The Used With All (article THE digunakan dengan ALL]
 [Unnecessary Definite Article ( Definite artikel yang tidak perlu)]

The Use of Articles (Penggunaan Artikel/kata sandang)

Definite Article: The

DEFINIT article digunakan untuk menunjukkan kata benda

(Noun), baikdalam bentuk tunggal atau jamak. definit article ini menunjukkan
benda, orang, tempat atau ide atau gagsan yang sudah jelas benda atua orangnya
yang dimaksud. misal. palu merah. berarti palu yang dimaksud adalah palu yang
berwarna merah bukan palu yang warna lain. article ini diletakkan
sebelum kata benda, atau sebelum kata
sifat yang langsung memodifikasikata benda.

Contoh.

 Please give me the hammer. tolong berikan palu itu kepada ku

  Please give me the red hammer; the blue one is too small. tolong berikan
kepada ku palu merah itu, palu yang biru terlalu kecil.
 Please give me the nail. tolong berikan kepada ku paku itu.
 Please give me the hammer and the nail. tolong berikan paku dan palu itu
kepada ku.

Indefinite Articles: A and An

Indefinite Articles digunakan ketika kita ingin menunjukkan sesuatu yang belum
jelas atau belum
ditentukan. Kita menggunakannya ketika kita tidaktahu (atau tidak peduli) yang
sedang kita berbicara .

 There once was a sheep.Dulu ada seekor domba.

saya tidak tahu domba ynag dimaksud domba yang amana, aku juga tidak tahu
namanya dan darimana domba itu bersal, pokoknya aku tidak tahu tentang
semua ini, jadi aku tidak bisa mengatakan itu domba.

Kita menggunakan articles ” A” sebelum kata benda (Noun) atau kata sifat
(adjectives) yang kata itu diawali oleh huruf mati (konsonan) baik secara bentuk
wujud huruf mauapun secara pengucapan seperti ” U” dibaca “YU” dll.

Contoh.

 A cat : seekor kucing

 A dog : seekor anjing
 A university : sebuah universitas
 A young puppy : seekor Anak anjing muda
 A one-eyed pirate : seorang Bajak laut yang bermata satu

Kita menggunakan ” AN” sebelum kata-

kata yang dimulai dengan bunyivokal atau bunyi H.

Contoh.

 An egg : Sebutir telur

 An hour-glass : sebuah jam kaca
 An antique necklace : sebuah kalung yang antik.

Ini adalah aturan dalam menggunakan akronim (singkatan).

A Society of Writers member was quoted in the article. seorang anggota penulis
sosial dikutif dalam sebuah artikel.

A S.O.W. member was quoted in the article. seorang anggota penulis sosial
dikutif dalam sebuah artikel.

An S.O.W. member was quoted in the article. seorang anggota penulis sosial
dikutif dalam sebuah artikel.

Karena S terdengar seperti dimulai dengan sebuah vokal (ess), maka,

didepannya harus digunakan article “an”.
Zero Article
Sebenarnya Zero Article tidaklah ada, namun ini sangat berguna.

Berbicara mengenai manfaat atau kegunaan Zero article adalah ketika kita menjelaskan
bagaimana article digunakan dalam sebuah kalimat. Tapi pada
dasarnya ketika kita berbicara tentang artikel nol berarti kita tidakmenggunakansemua artikel di
depan kata benda. dengan kata lain kita tidak menggunakan artikel a/an or the dalam kalimat
yang kita buat.

contoh.

 generic mass noun: Happiness is contagious.

 generic plural noun: Cars have accelerators.
 generic plural noun: They want equal rights.
 indefinite mass noun: I drink coffee.
 indefinite plural noun: I saw cars.

The Used With All (article THE digunakan dengan ALL)

Dalam Bahas ainggris , kata The seharusnya tidak ada sebelum kata All .
seharusnya mereka (The dan All) digunakan secara terpisah atau justru
digabungkan menjadi All the.

Contoh.

 At the all birthday parties, food and drinks are served to the guests.

dalam kalimat diatas seharusnya ditulis: at birthday parties…, at all birthday

parties…, or at all the birthday parties….

 My father asked me to take the all books off the dining room table.

seharusnya ditulis: My father asked me to take all the books off the dining
room table.

Unnecessary Definite Article ( Definite artikel yang tidak perlu)

Jika kata benda yang diguanakan merupakan kata benda umum, maka kita
menggunakan An, atau bahkan mungkin tanpa artikel sama sekali.

Contoh.

 Use the utensil when eating the dinner. Menggunakan alat-

alat ketikamakan malam.
 Use the fork when eating your
dinner. Menggunakan garpu ketikamakan malam Anda.
 Use a utensil when eating dinner. Gunakan perkakas saat makanmalam.
 Give me the liberty or give me the death. beri aku kebebasan atau berikan
aku kematian.
 Give me liberty or give me death. beri aku kebebasan atau berikan aku
kematian.
Ingat bahwa kata
benda yang telah disebutkan sebelumnya harus diubaholeh sebuah artikel langs
ung; Namun, jika kata benda hanya muncul untukpertama kalinya, an indirect
article yang harus digunakan.

contoh.

A child is riding a bicycle along a sidewalk; the child is

wearing the helmet. seorang
anak mengendarai sepeda di trotoar; seorang anak mengenakanhelm.
