Key Words
Compounds, elements, solute,
solvent and solution
*What is a mixture?*
-A mixture is a group of different
substances put together.
-A mixture is therefore a
substance made by combining or
putting together two or more
different materials
-Whenever we have a mixture it
must be a substance that can be
separated to get back to what it
was before the mixture
-For example, we can have a salt
and sugar solution to treat
people suffering from diarrhoea
or running stomach.
-In this case, salt and sugar
solution is a mixture and we can
separate the solution back into
salt and sugar.
-There are many methods that
can be used to separate mixture,
some of which are:
a) Sieving
b) Filtration
c) Evaporation
d) Magnetism
1. *Sieving*
This is the method used to
separate grain from chaff. Grain
refers to the seed of a cereal like
maize, rapoko or sorghum. For
the sieving method to work, the
two substances to be separated
must have different sizes. The
substance with smaller size will
go through the holes of the sieve
while the larger substance
remains in the sieve.
2. *Filtration*
This method is used to separate
solids from a liquid. For example,
we can use this method to
separate sand and water. So, the
liquid passes through filter paper,
leaving the solid behind
3. *Evaporation*
This is used where the mixture is
a solution or a liquid. The mixture
or solution is heated until the
solvent turns into a gas. When a
liquid turns into a gas, we say it
is evaporating. The other
substance which cannot
evaporate will remain behind.
This
way, we are able to separate a
substance that can evaporate
from that which cannot
evaporate. For example, if we
have sand and we can heat the
water until it evaporates, leaving
the sand behind.
4. *Magnetism*
This refers to the ability to attract
other particles. There are some
materials that are attracted by a
magnet and there are some that
are not. So, we can use a
magnet to separate a mixture
made up of materials that are
attracted to a magnet and those
that are not, for example metal
and wood or plastic
