Narwhals spend their lives in the Arctic waters of
Canada, Greenland, Norway and Russia. The
majority of the world’s narwhals winter for up to five
months under the sea ice in the Baffin Bay-Davis
Strait area (between Canada and western Greenland).
Cracks in the ice allow them to breathe when needed,
especially after dives, which can be up to a mile and
a half deep.

Narwhals are listed as species of special concern in Canada. Narwhal populations may be limited or
threatened by hunting, environmental contaminants, climate change and industrial activities.
Narwhals have been traditionally harvested for over a thousand years by Inuit people in northern Canada
and Greenland for food and their tusk. To this day, the Inuit are the only group of people allowed to
hunt narwhals.
Between 45,000 and 50,000 narwhals from the Baffin Bay population may summer in Canadian waters.

Narwhals breed at the end of the winter out in deep water, gestation
lasts for about 14-16 months and the following summer calves are
born in shallow water where the whales migrate to in the summer
months. They have one calf every 3 years or so and become
reproductive after 5 years for females and 8 years for males.

the wild as it happens in the depths of icy seas but it is thought they ingest

some fish species they feed on are only found below certain depths.
