Pengertian
Paramphistomiosis adalah penyakit yang disebabkan oleh
infeksi Paramphistomum sp. yang merupakan salah satu
cacing dalam kelas trematoda. Paramphistomiasis pada
sapi dapat disebabkan oleh satu atau lebih cacing dari
genus Paramphistomum sp., misalnya P. cervi, P.
microbothrioides, P. liorchis, P. ichikawi, P. gotoi, dan
Calicophoron sp. atau Ceylonocotyle sp.

Epidemiologi
Kejadian paramphistomiasis banyak terjadi di bagian dunia dengan curah hujan yang
tinggi dan di padang rumput yang basah, hal ini berkaitan dengan siklus hidup cacing
tersebut. Infeksi Paramphistomum sp. pada ternak biasa terjadi terjadi pada akhir
musim hujan dan awal musim kemarau. Hal ini disebabkan oleh pertumbuhan optimal
telur menjadi mirasidium terjadi pada awal musim hujan dan perkembangan di dalam
tubuh siput mencapai tahap yang lengkap pada akhir musim hujan.
Phatogenesis
Infeksi cacing Paramphistomum spp. disebabkan karena tertelannya pakan yang mengandung
metaserkaria. Dari hasil yang didapat membuktikan bahwa sampai saat ini masih ada peternak
sapi bali yang mengembalakan sapinya pada tempattempat yang rumputnya tumbuh pada
genangan air yang ada hospes intermedier dari cacing Paramphistomum spp berupa siput.
Infeksi Paramphistomum sp. terdiri atas dua fase, yaitu fase intestinal dan fase ruminal. Hal ini
dapat menyebabkan duodenitis dan menyebabkan duodenitis dan abomasitis.
Gejala Klinis
Gejala klinis akibat paramphistomiasis pada fase intestinal, yaitu adanya peradangan
usus yang ditandai dengan diare yang berbau busuk. Sapi yang terinfeksi akan menjadi
lemah, depresi, dehidrasi dan anoreksia. Selain itu, sapi mengalami hipoproteinemia
yang ditandai dengan oedema submandibular dan mukosa mulut kelihatan pucat.
