In line with the development of knowledge and technology, especially for high-rise buildings
and long-span bridges where high quality concrete is needed. The use of silica fume in
concrete mixes, aims to produce concrete with higher strength. Glass powder also has the
potential to increase the compressive strength of concrete, because it contains high silica,
needed to improve the quality of concrete and can reduce environmental pollution. This study
aims to determine the effect of the use of glass powder and silica fume as a substitute for
cement on the mechanical properties of high quality concrete.
The research began with a preliminary test of aggregates and glass powder after that made a
mix design that refers to SNI 7656-2012 with a planned concrete compressive strength of 50
MPa. In this study used glass powder with variations of 0%, 5%, 10% and 15% with a
constant silica fume of 10% by weight of cement. Tests of concrete mechanical properties
performed are compressive strength, split tensile strength, flexural strength, shear strength
and tested at 28 days of concrete.
The test results show that the use of silica fume can improve the quality of concrete, this is
indicated by the increased compressive strength of concrete using silica fume 10% by 53.95
MPa with a percentage increase of 3.91% compared to concrete without silica fume which is
equal to 51.92 MPa. The use of glass powder can also improve the quality of concrete, seen
from the results of compressive strength and tensile strength testing, obtained the maximum
proportion occurs in the use of glass powder 5% and silica fume 10% respectively 60.64 MPa
and 6.09 MPa with the percentage increase by 12.41% and 2.17% compared to concrete
without glass powder that is equal to 53.95 MPa and 5.43 MPa. While the modulus of
collapse and maximum shear strength were found in the variation of glass powder 10% and
silica fume 10% respectively 6.11 MPa and 21.53 MPa with an increase percentage of
11.79% and 24.70% compared to the value of high quality concrete without the use of glass
powder is 5.47 MPa and 17.26 MPa.
