etelah mempelajari Unit 3 Anda diharapkan dapat menggunakan
ungkapan-ungkapan untuk:
Memperkenalkan diri sendiri.
2. Memperkenalkan orang lain.
3. Menanyakan nama seseorang.
4. Menjawab pertanyaan tentang nama.

Pada Unit 1 Anda telah belajar bagaimana memberikan atau

mengucapkan salam kepada orang lain. Pada Unit 2 Anda telah belajar
tentang memperkenalkan atau memberikan informasi tentang diri sendiri
(give self-identifikation and personal information). Unit 3 akan membahas
tentang introducing oneself and others (memperkenalkan diri sendiri dan
orang lain).
Dalam bahasa Inggris ada ungkapan-ungkapan yang digunakan untuk
memperkenalkan diri sendiri dan seseorang atau orang lain, memberikan
salam kepada orang yang dikenalkan, dan juga menjawab salam yang
diucapkan oleh orang yang sedang dikenalkan. Untuk lebih jelasnya Anda
pelajari bagaimana seseorang memperkenalkan diri sendiri dan orang lain.

Pada Dialog 1, Mike memperkenalkan dirinya kepada Hasan dengan

mengatakan: I am Mike. I’m a new student in this class. Kemudian Hasan
memperkenalkan dirinya kepada Mike dengan mengatakan: My name is
Hasan. I’m the class leader. Lalu Mike mengatakan: “How do you do?”
kepada Hasan. “How do you do?” ini diucapkan untuk menanyakan khabar
kepada orang yang baru pertama kali bertemu. Jadi ungkapan How do you
do? diucapkan oleh dua orang yang belum saling mengenal. Ungkapan I’m
happy to meet you digunakan untuk menyatakan kegembiraannya bertemu
dengan seseorang. Dalam Dialog 1, Mike merasa gembira bertemu dengan
Hasan, dan Hasan juga merasa gembira dengan mengatakan ungkapan yang
sama I’m happy to meet you yang ditambah dengan kata too yang mempunyai
pengertian juga.
Pada Dialog 2 Johan menanyakan kepada Mike: “Are you Mike, a new
student in this class?” Maksud dari pertanyaan ini adalah: ”Apakah Anda
Mike, anak baru di kelas ini?” Mike menjawab: ”Yes, I am.” yang
maksudnya: ”Ya, saya Mike.”
 Pada Dialog 3 Mike bertanya kepada Mr. Harun: “Are you Mr. Harmon,
the school principal?” Mr. Harun menjawab: “No, I’m not.” Maksudnya
“bukan, saya bukan Mr. Harmon.” Pada Dialog 3 Mr. Harun juga bertanya
kepada Mike: ”Is your name Michel?” Mike lalu menjawab: “No, it isn’t.”
Maksud dari jawaban ini adalah: ”Bukan, nama saya bukan Michel.” Coba
Anda pelajari lebih lanjut penjelasan berikut ini.

Kedua kalimat ini memberikan informasi bahwa saya adalah Mike.

Kalimat pertama menyatakan Saya Mike, sedangkan kalimat kedua berarti
Nama saya Mike. Ada dua cara untuk menanyakan apakah nama Anda
Mike. Perhatikan kedua pertanyaan berikut ini.
1. Are you Mike?
2. Is your name Mike?

Pertanyaan pertama menghendaki jawaban Yes, I am (apabila yang

ditanya bernama Mike) atau No, I am not (apabila yang ditanya bukan
bernama Mike). Pertanyaan kedua menghendaki jawaban Yes, it is (apabila
yang ditanya bernama Mike) atau No, it is not (apabila yang ditanya bukan
Mike). Anda pelajari Table 1.2 berikut ini.

 Jawaban kalimat tanya pada kalimat nomor 2 dan 4 menggunakan kata
ganti it. Kata ganti it ini berasal dari kata benda My name atau your name
dalam kalimat interrogative.
Sekarang Anda tentu sudah dapat mengucapkan/memberikan salam
kepada orang lain. Untuk itu tiba giliran Anda untuk berlatih. Anda kerjakan
latihan-latihan berikut ini.

Prof. Brown memperkenalkan Tom kepada Bill dengan mengatakan: “Bill,

this is Tom.” Anda dapat memperkenalkan istri, atau suami atau teman Anda
kepada Bill, misalnya, dengan mengatakan:

 Berikut ini adalah contoh-contoh lain untuk memperkenalkan seseorang
kepada orang lain. Anda pelajari ungkapan-ungkapan berikut ini.

Kata happy dalam “I’m happy to meet you” dapat diganti dengan glad atau
pleased sehingga kalimatnya menjadi “I’m glad to meet you” atau “I’m
pleased to meet you.”
Ketika Bill mengatakan: “I’m happy to meet you, Tom,” Tom menjawab:
“Thank you. The same to you.” Dalam dialog ini, Bill mengungkapkan rasa
gembiranya kepada Tom dan Tom menjawab: ”Terima kasih.” ”Saya juga
gembira bertemu Anda.” Jadi ungkapan The same to you dalam dialog ini
maksudnya adalah: ”Saya juga gembira bertemu Anda.”

SUMMARY

Dalam perkenalan kita dapat terlebih dahulu memperkenalkan diri

sendiri atau mungkin orang lain yang memulainya terlebih dahulu. Kita
juga dapat memperkenalkan seseorang kepada orang lain. Ungkapan-
ungkapan bahasa Inggris yang digunakan untuk memperkenalkan diri
sendiri misalnya:
1. I am Mike.
2. My name is Mike.

Ungkapan-ungkapan bahasa Inggris yang digunakan untuk

menanyakan nama orang lain misalnya: Are you Mike? Apabila Anda
ditanya dengan pertanyaan yang semacam ini dan nama Anda adalah
Mike maka Anda menjawabnya dengan jawaban Yes, I am. Apabila
Anda ditanya dengan pertanyaan yang sama: Are you Mike? Tetapi
apabila nama Anda bukan Mike maka Anda jawablah pertanyaan
tersebut dengan jawaban No, I am not.
Untuk menanyakan nama kita dapat menggunakan ungkapan Is your
name Mike? Apabila Anda ditanya dengan menggunakan ungkapan ini,
dan nama yang ditanyakan adalah nama Anda maka Anda menjawabnya
dengan jawaban Yes, it is. Namun apabila nama Anda bukan yang
ditanyakan, maka Anda menjawabnya dengan No, it is not.
Ungkapan-ungkapan yang digunakan untuk memperkenalkan orang
lain misalnya:

How do you feel? adalah ungkapan yang digunakan untuk menanyakan
