2.3 READING and VOCABULARY BUILDING

TEXT A
My name is Natasha Laing and I was born in Tarakan on the fifth of October 1993. My family
is an average sized Dayakese family. I have a father, a mother and a brother. I was named after my
granny and I am very proud of it. I descend from the family of office-workers.
My mother tongue is Dayakese, though in everyday life I speak mostly Indonesian. I can also
speak English a little and I understand spoken Tidung and Bulongan languages.
Now I am going to speak about my father. His name is Bawan Bagie. He is 42. He is a
computer engineer by education, but he is in business now. His firm deals with modern TV sets and
computers. He often goes on business trips to different cities of the country and abroad. After his
trips he tells us many interesting stories about people, different countries and their traditions.
Though my father is a very busy man, he always finds time to listen to our problems and to help us.
He is also handy with many things. He can fix almost everything: a washing machine, a vacuum
cleaner, a fridge etc. He likes sports. Basketball is his favorite. That is why he is still a very
handsome tall man with broad shoulders, fair hair and grey eyes.
My mother’s name is Udin Laing. She is four years younger than my father. She is shorter than
my father. Her dark hair, small thin nose, brown eyes and open smile make her very beautiful. She
is a doctor and she likes her work very much. My mum is fond of music and poetry. She also likes
dancing and singing. She attended a music school. My mum plays the piano fairly well. She also does
most of the cooking, washing, cleaning and tiding. She seems to be never tired. Of course, we always
try to help her as much as we can.
My brother’s name is Simson. He is 12 and naturally he is still at school. He does very well at
school, so his school reports are always excellent. He is especially very good at Math and English.
They are his favorite subjects. He says he wants to become an engineer.
He is like his mother: same hair, same eyes, same voice and same manners. Just like his
mother, he is fond of music and likes singing and dancing very much. Just like his father, he is fond
of sports. My brother is of great help to my parents.
I have got a grandfather and grandmother. They are my grandparents on my mother’s side.
They are under 65, and they are still in good health. As they live in the country, they have a large
house with a garden nearby. They still keep a small household. They are retired now. My Granny
and Granddad enjoy seeing us in their house very much. So we often go to see them on weekends.
We have many relatives. Some of them live in Malinau, others live in the Nunukan, Bulungan
and Tarakan. They always try to come and see us each time we celebrate some family holidays or to
send us their best wishes.
I’ve finished school this year. Choosing the right career to follow is one of the most important
decisions you ever make. As for me, I made my choice long ago. Besides, my parents encouraged me
a lot in choosing my profession. I want to work in the sphere of environment protection and
contribute as much as possible to the improvement of the ecology situation in the North
Kalimantan. Therefore, I did my best at school, as well as took a preparatory course at the
University. I am always very busy, but when I am free I like to read books and visit museums and
art galleries. I have many friends and I like to travel.

TEXT B
MY WORKING DAY

My every day activities are quite routine. They do not differ much from those of any
other working person. My working day begins at 7 a.m. when I get up. I do my physical
jerks, wash, brush my teeth and comb my hair. Then I have breakfast. For breakfast I
usually have toasted bread, fried eggs, corn flakes, tea or coffee and some jam.
At half past seven I leave for work. I work as a nurse on a shift basis at Public Hospital
in Tarakan, therefore I have to work on my days off too. It takes me 20 minutes to get to my
hospital by bus. At 8:30 a.m. I take up my duties at the hospital for the duration of 24 hours.
It is my obligation to take due care of the sick people and to treat them according to the
required recommendations. I feel tired, of course, by the end of my shift, but I am happy to
think that I will have a 2-days’ rest before my next turn. As my week-days are extremely
busy I use every opportunity to spend my two days of rest most usefully. I enjoy meeting
my friends, reading interesting books, visiting museums and theaters etc.
I began to think about my future profession at the age of 15. My parents encouraged
me in my desire to connect my life with medicine. Becoming a nurse had been the first step
in acquiring this profession. Having become a nurse I have come to realize that I am willing
to connect my life with biology. This year I have realized my cherished dream to become a
student of the biology faculty. I have managed to successfully pass my exams and entered
the University of Borneo Tarakan. Of course, being a student of such a reputable institution
of higher education imposes certain responsibilities upon myself, therefore I reduce
sometimes all my entertainments and try to study to the most of my abilities to achieve my
life’s ambitions and to justify hopes of my parents. I also hope that I will never regret my
choice and get a well-paid and interesting job afterwards. Maybe I will consider my future
job connected with genetics problems.
14
My parents usually return home at 7 p.m. When I am at home we have dinner
together, we use the possibility to exchange the news and to make plans for the future.
I used to go to bed at about 11 p.m. Before going to bed I take a shower, clean my
teeth and then do some reading. Usually I fall asleep at once as I feel very tired by the end
of the day.

MY DAY OFF AND MY HOBBIES

When I was a pupil my only regular day off was Sunday. It was a day of freedom from routine
duties and studies. I could do whatever I wished and could go wherever I wanted. I could also stay
the whole day at home and have a good rest.
But I must admit that every day off needs some special planning. Time passes quickly and if
you have no plans be sure to get no results. You may spend your time on trifles.
15
So, I’ll try to describe my common day off. If I planned to get out into the open air, I had to get
up very early to catch the train. When the sky is blue and the sun is shining my friends and I like to
go to the riverside for our ideal day out. A walk or a drive to the country may be a good alternative.
But such a way of relaxation is acceptable in early autumn or late spring. Our winter days off differ
greatly. In winter, if you want to skate or ski, it is not necessary to get out of town. You can do it not
far from your home.
Sometimes when the weather was nasty, I could afford to relax and not to be in a hurry. So I
could stay in bed and not get up till 10 or 11 a.m. Only then I dressed and had my breakfast. I
watched TV, played with my little brother, did some reading, prepared my homework and after that
went to see a friend of mine to play chess or go to the cinema with him. I’m not a great cinemagoer,
but I like to see feature films and enjoy historical adventure films. I find these films most instructive
and entertaining.
In case I had neither plans nor inclination to go anywhere, I could look through again and
again my numerous albums full of different stamps. Collecting stamps is my hobby. Almost
everyone collects something in his life: coins, stamps, postcards, buttons, books, records, toys,
watches. My parents started collecting stamps long ago and then passed their collection to me. Now
I continue collecting stamps myself.
No matter what kind of hobby you have, you always have the opportunity of learning from it.
By reading about the things you are interested in you are adding to what you know. Learning things
is the most exciting aspect of my hobby too. Each stamp has its own story to tell. I can see pictures
of distant countries and their people. I learn their history, culture and traditions. The greatest part
of my collection is devoted to famous artists and their masterpieces. This part of my collection
looks like art gallery.
My relatives very often send new stamps to me together with their letters and postcards.
Sometimes I buy new stamps in a shop. I also have many pen friends in Belarus and abroad. We
exchange stamps with them. Now I don’t have much time to spend on my collection, but sometimes
I come back to it with great pleasure.
My evenings I prefer to spend at home. At about 7 p.m. we have dinner. It’s a good
opportunity for the family to discuss the events of the day and our plans for the coming week.
I must say that I’m a great reader, but I never have enough time to enjoy it. I always read a
book or a magazine late in the evening.
On Sunday my usual bedtime was 11 p.m. as I wanted to have a good sleep before starting a
new week of studies.

Types of Transport for Your Holiday

You’re at your holiday destination, and now you need to continue your journey. Taxis are
quick and efficient for short journeys, but they can be expensive. Many charge per passenger,
piece of luggage, as well as surcharges for airport and night time journeys. If you want to be free
to travel when and where you like, car hire can offer good value. You pay a daily or weekly rate
for hiring a car, plus fuel costs and you choose the kind of car you want, but most are bad for the
environment. Adventurous tourists can rent a motorbike, moped or bicycle. These are cheaper
and also more environmentally-friendly, but watch out for traffic or people stealing your bike!
For people on a budget, public transport is a good and green option.
Cities usually have a choice of underground, buses, trains and sometimes trams and cable
cars too. In small towns, the options are more limited. Cost and convenience vary a lot in
different places, so look out for special offers like combination tickets, weekend or all-day travel
passes. Of course if you want to save your money and the planet, you could always walk!

My Hobby
My greatest passion is playing soccer in a leisure time.
Frequently, after finishing my home-work, I spend a
lot of free time playing soccer. I've been so keen to
play soccer since childhood, but I started to learn to
play well when I was 5 years old. I was in a
kindergarten when I was 5 years old. My dad asked
my sport teacher about my soccer hobby. And my
teacher told him that there's a sports facility at school
each day, so you can notify your son. Today, I just
enjoy playing soccer and taking part in inter-school
tournaments.

5.2 Reading
Task 1. Read the following passage then answer the questions.

Traditional Markets

(Pasar) in Indonesia
For generations,
Indonesians have bought
their food at traditional
markets, pasar. The
term pasar can refer to a
gathering of
tukang sayur (vendors
who sell off carts which
go through residential
areas), to a rough,
temporary structure
where sellers gather in
the morning, to the large,
multistory buildings. Throughout Jakarta, the items sold in pasar are basically the same - fruit,
vegetables, meat and fish, spices, dry goods and household items. Selection may vary slightly to
better serve the needs of the ethnic groups which live in the area. For example, if the pasar is
located near an area where there are many ethnic Indians, they may have more Indian spices or,
if there are a lot of Minangkabau people living nearby, more Padang spices will be available.

Answer the following questions!

1. Where does the activity take place?
2. What are sold in Pasar based on the text?
3. Where is the location of Pasar, based on the passage above?
4. How do the Indonesian women buy some fruits in Pasar?
30
Task 2
Daily Trip to the Pasar

Going to the pasar is a daily activity for Indonesian women or their household help. Since refrigerators
are too expensive for the poor and Indonesians like their vegetables and meat fresh, this necessitates a
trip to the pasar each day to buy ingredients for that day's meals. While shopping in supermarkets is
popular amongst the middle and upper classes, supermarket prices are generally too expensive for the
poor. Shopping is not all that's done at the pasar. It's also a chance to get out of the house and catch up on
all the latest news and gossip with neighbors and friends.
Bargaining
Prices are not marked on items at traditional markets. Therefore, the fine art of bargaining is taken to
new levels as housewives and household help try to get the cheapest prices possible. True shopping
savvy means that you already know what the price should be before you start shopping. Prices are
compared and news is spread from friend to friend on today's prices for various items.
Foreigners are not necessarily privy to
the price information network and must
bargain ardently to get the best price.
Before you go to the pasar, ask your
household help what prices you can
expect to pay for the various items you
want to buy. You could also check
supermarket prices realizing that the
items will be cheaper at the pasar.
It is important to maintain your cool in
the bargaining process. If the first price
quoted is double what you know it
should be, show your shopping savvy by
quoting today's price at the supermarket
or yesterday's price from the pasar. Once
the seller realizes you know what you're
talking about, the prices will quickly
come down.
Take time to talk with the seller and show your curiosity and interest in the various items. Once you
establish a relationship (langganan) with one seller, you will get better prices by returning to that person
each time you shop. Your household help have their langganan with which they always shop. From time
to time, in appreciation for the repeat business, the seller may 'gift' your household help with an extra
item for their use. This is normal business practice at neighborhood pasar and you shouldn't think that
your household help is trying to personally benefit from your shopping money.
Prices and availability of many items depend on the season and the success of the harvest. The ever-
increasing cost of living, as fuel and electric prices increase, has driven many prices through the roof.
Answer these questions based on the passage
1. what is the main topic of the passage?
2. What is the daily activity of Indonesia woman?
3. How do the buyers get the best prices?
4. What is langganan means in line 19?
31

What students most need from a class on shopping is being able to understand questions that
they might be asked by the shop assistants such as “Can I help you?”, “What color would you
like?” and “Is there anything else (I can help you with)?” They may also need to understand
questions specific to particular shops such as “Can I see your boarding pass?” in duty free.

The next stage is obviously knowing how to respond to the questions that they might be asked.
To start with, they need to be able to recognize Yes/ No questions and be able to respond both
ways (“Yes, please. I’m looking for a present for my nephews” or “No, that’s okay, thanks. I’m just
looking”). Then they need to be able to do the same with Wh- questions.

For both understanding questions and knowing how to respond, they might need specific
vocabulary such as:

 The names of the objects that they want to buy

 The names of parts of the things that they want to buy, such as “sleeves” and “pleats”
 Names of things and people in the shop, such as “shop manager”, “cash register” and

Jobs made the company “Apple” that created these things that are now such an
important part of the lives of millions of people.
He was born on February 24, 1955, in San Francisco, California. When
he was a boy, he had a special hobby: he liked to take apart televisions and put
them back together again. He was a very good student in school and even
skipped a grade. After he finished grade four, he went into grade six, and in 1972, when he was
seventeen, he graduated from high school. He then began his studies in Reed College, in Portland,
Oregon, but dropped out after six months. Deciding to quit was not at all easy. It was difficult, but as
Jobs later said, “I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life.” Two years later in 1974, he travelled
to India, and while there he learned about Buddhism.
After Steve Jobs returned to the United States, he found a job as a video
game designer at a company called Atari, and two years after that, in 1976, when he
was only twenty-one years old, he created his own company “Apple Computer“ with
his friend, Steve Wozniak. Steve Jobs later got married in 1991 and had four
children. Unfortunately, doctors discovered that he had cancer in 2003 and in 2011
he died at the age of only 56.

Jessica is a new student in Mr. Ryan’s English class. She is from
Colombia. Today is her first day in class. She is introducing herself to
three other students. One of her classmates is from Russia. Her other
classmates have different nationalities. Some are Mexican, Chinese,
Vietnamese, and Spanish. Jessica lives downtown with her uncle, aunt,
and two cousins. She has a new job in her new town. She works in an
office. She has a good work schedule and very nice coworkers. One is
tall and thin, another is short and heavy. Jessica is talking about her
hobby— something she likes to do in her free time. Jessica’s supervisor
is listening to the coworkers talk. Jessica’s family, classmates, and
coworkers all look different. Some have blond hair, some have dark
curly hair, and one is bald. Some are young and some are old. Some are
her age. Jessica likes her new life downtown!
