Dear Jamal,

It’s nice to have your letter. I’m glad that your father has bought a new car. What
colour is it? You wrote that he drives you to school everyday. Therefore, you don’t
need to take city bus. We have a car too. It’s colour is silver.
I don’t go to school by car. Here, students go to school by subway. Therefore,
subway stations are very crowded in the morning.
Do you know what a subway is? The subway has underground trains that travel
around the city. We use subway as you use city buses. The buses travel on city streets,
but subway travels in tunnels underneath the streets. They are powered by electricity.
How is your school going? Your English has improved a lot. I’m very happy to
have you as friend. It’s very nice to write to you. However, it’s twelve o’clock. I have
to go to bed. I will write again soon.
Send my warm regards to your parents and your sister, Jameela.

disebut conditional type 1.
Type unreal merupakan pola lamunan yang merupakan pengingkaran dari fakta sebenarnya akan terjadi

Conjunctions
A conjunction is a word that links words, phrases, or clauses. There are three types of
conjunctions: coordinating conjunctions, correlative conjunctions, and subordinatingconjunctions.
a. Coordinating Conjunctions

F A N B O Y S
for and nor but or yet so
An easy way to remember these six conjunctions is to think of the word FANBOYS. Each of the letters
in this somewhat unlikely word is the first letter of one of the coordinating conjunctions. Remember,
when using a conjunction to join two sentences, use a comma before the conjunction.

Examples and Sentences Coordinating Conjunctions

CONJUNCTION SAMPLE SENTENCES
for The boy keeps the lights on, for he is afraid of
sleeping in the dark.
and We have tickets for the symphony and the opera.
but The orchestra rehearses on Tuesday, but the

or Have you seen or heard the opera by Scott Joplin?
yet I didn’t study, yet I passed the exam.
so I wanted to sit in the front of the balcony, so I
ordered my tickets early.

b. Correlative Conjunctions

both...and not only...but also either...or neither...nor whether...or

Remember, correlative conjunctions are always used in pairs. They join similar elements. When joining
singular and plural subjects; the subject closest to the verb determines whether the verb is singular or
plural.

Examples and Sentences Correlative Conjunctions

CONJUNCTIONS SAMPLE SENTENCE
both...and Both my sister and my brother play the piano.
either...or Tonight's program is either Mozart or Beethoven.

not only...but also Not only does Sue raise money for the symphony, but she also ushers at all of their
concerts.
whether…or She asked to his husband whether he would go to London or stayed at home.
c. Subordinating Conjunctions
Subordinating conjunctions, (subordinators) are most important in creating subordinating clauses.
These adverbs that act like conjunctions are placed at the front of the clause. The adverbial clause can
come either before or after the main clause. Subordinators are usually a single word, but there are also a
number of multi-word subordinators that function like a single subordinating conjunction. They can be
classified according to their use in regard to time, cause and effect, opposition, or condition.
Remember; put a comma at the end of the adverbial phrase when it precedes the main clause.

MATERI 3
WISH AND HOPE

1.   Wish + Clause (Mengharapkan/ ingin)

Contoh Kalimat:
I wish I could help you. (Artinya: Saya berharap saya dapat membantumu)
I wish I know your address. (Artinya: Saya ingin tahu alamatmu)
2.   Hope + that clause (Mengharap)
Contoh Kalimat:
I hope that you have done the test.
(Artinya: Saya harap kamu sudah mengerjakan tes tersebut)
I hope that we shall get much money.
(Artinya: Saya harap kita dapat memperoleh banyak uang)

The difference between "wish" and "hope"

•         Wish is most commonly used in hypothetical (or imagined/unreal) situations:
Example:
I wish (that) you were here. (Unfortunately, you're not, and I miss you.)
•         Sometimes wish is used in greeting and expressions of goodwill:
Example:
We wish you a "Merry Christmas."
•         Hope can also be used in expressions of goodwill
•         Hope can also be used in expressions of goodwill, but the grammar is slightly different:
Examples:
I hope (that) you have a Merry Christmas. (some time in the future)
I hope (that) you had a nice Birthday. (some time in the past)
Hope can be used to specify a desired outcome. For future hopes, the possibilities remain open, but for
past hopes, the outcome has usually been determined already.
Examples:
I hope you can come to the party on Saturday.(future possibility)
I was hoping that you would come to the party.(but you didn't)
I had hoped to see you at the party on Saturday. (but I didn't)
