1. Daerah sensitif indera pembau terletak di bagian atas

rongga hidung.
2. Strukturnya terdiri dari sel penyokong yg berupa sel
epitel dan sel pembau yg berupa neuron sbg
reseptor

1. Zat yg memiliki sifat bau berupa uap atau gas mencapai reseptor.
2. Zat tersebut dapat larut dalam lendir hidung, sehingga terjadi
pengikatan dg protein pada membran dendrit.
3. Kemudian muncul impuls yg dijalarkan dari saraf olfaktori ke traktus
olfaktorius menuju ke otak, untuk:
• Diinterpretasikan di korteks otak pada daerah bau primer.
• Dihubungkan pusat muntah bila mencium bau-bau tidak enak atau
dengan hipotalamus untuk sekresi ludah dan perasaan lapar.
• Disimpan di korteks otak sebagai ingatan.
4. Setiap zat penimbul bau hanya merangsang satu reseptor saja
5. Bau primer : Bau eter, bunga, peppermint, muski, kamper, tengik, dan
pedas
6. Kelainan pada indara pembau: ANOSMIA, kehilangan sensivitas terhadap
bau (penyumbatan akibat pilek atau tumor, sel rambut rusak akibat
infeksi, atau gangguan pada saraf olfaktorius)
