ABSTRACK
Diarrheal diseases continue to contribute significantly to morbidity and mortality
in infants and young children in developing countries. Diarrhoeal diseases are the
commonest illnesses and have the greatest negative impact upon the growth of
infants and young children. The causes of diarrhoeal diseases have traditionally
ii
been ascribed to water supply and sanitation. Poor socioeconomic status (SES)
increases diarrhoea risk, mostly mediated by lack of sanitation, poor infrastructure
and living conditions.
The importance of exclusive breastfeeding in the prevention of infectious diseases
during infancy is well known. In addition, breastfeeding reduces exposure to
contaminated fluids and foods, and contributes to ensuring adequate nutrition and
thus non-specific immunity.
Parents can be advised that diarrhea is common and usually resolves without
treatment within days, however, symptoms are unpleasant and affect both the
child and family or carers. Severe diarrhea can quickly cause dehydration, which
may be life threatening. Parents and carers therefore require information and
advice on recognising symptoms or signs that should cause concern, on providing
appropriate care to prevent or treat dehydration and on maintaining their childs
nutritional intake. Parents also have key role in the prevention of spread of
infection to household members and to the wider community.
