EMBEDDED QUESTIONS DAN TAG QUESTIONS

1. Embedded Questions

Embedded Questions adalah kata tanya yang terdapat pada sebuah kalimat atau pernyataan.
Embedded Questions bukan merupakan kalimat tanya, makanya bentuknya pun tidak seperti
kalimat tanya. Pelajari aturan2 berikut ini.

Subject + Verb(phrase) + Question Word + Subject + Verb(phrase)

example:

a. We haven't ascertained where the meeting will take place.

b. Where will the meeting take place?

kalimat a adalah kalimat pernyataan, sedangkan pada kalimat b adalah kalimat pertanyaan.

Selain itu, Embedded Questions juga bisa terdapat pada kalimat pertanyaan.

Auxiliary + Subject + Verb + Question Word + Subject + Verb

Example:

a. Do you know where he went ?

b. Can you tell me how far the museum is from the collage?

2. Tag Questions

Dalam tag question, penutur membuat sebuah pernyataan tapi tidak yakin dengan
pernyataannya. Jadi, dia menggunakan tag question untuk memverifikasi pernyataan tersebut.
Berikut aturan2nya;

a. Gunakan auxiliary yang sama dengan yang terdapat pada kalimat utama. Jika pada
kalimat utama tidak terdapat auxiliary , maka pada tag question , auxiliary yang digunakan
adalah do / does (present) dan did (past).

- It is raining now, isn't it?

- you will go tomorrow, won't you? ( won't = will not )

- you talked with the professor yesterday, didn't you?

- she has two children, doesn't she?

b. Jika kalimat utama positif maka tag question-nya harus negatif. Sebaliknya, jika kalimat
utama negatif maka tag question nya positif. Pada tag question , subject nya harus berupa
pronoun.

- The boys don't have class tomorrow, do they ?

- The boys have class tomorrow, don't they ?

c. Jika kalimat tersebut menggunakan pseudo-subject ( There is / There are ), maka tag
question nya juga harus menggunakan there .

- There are only three days in February, aren't there ?

- There is a coffee shop near here, isn't there ?
