Custom DATABASES:

Private comparison databases can be created based on institutions' needs and allows for document-to-document comparison

Comprehensive Reporting
• „Match overview‟ shows the most relevant sources found to match the document by the iThenticate algorithm or view a list of
all the sources found to match the document within the system.
• „Summary‟ report provides a high-level overview of matched content in the document.
• „Largest matches‟ shows where the sources and text of the largest content matches in the document (only available in the
Text-only mode).

Effective 2013, customers have the unique benefit of viewing results in two different modes: Document Viewer and Text-Only. The
Document Viewer mode displays matches within the document‟s original format, including images, tables and graphs. In both
modes, users get a side-by-side comparison of the document to matched sources in the database and in-depth analytics that
provide visibility into content submissions and levels of originality over time.

Compare iThenticate to Turnitin

While iThenticate and Turnitin share the same underlying technology and database contents, the design, user experience and
outcome are designed to meet the needs of two very different types of users.

Turnitin is designed for students in a classroom setting. iThenticate is designed for academics and researchers who need to
organize and share their work in a folder-based system similar to Google Docs. This design strips away many of the controls
implemented to meet the needs of the classroom experience. In short, iThenticate helps academic and professional researchers
collaborate and check their work quickly and effectively.

Safeguarding your content
Depositing Content in the iThenticate Database
By choosing to deposit their published content in the iThenticate database, content providers can safeguard their
intellectual property from potential plagiarism; ensure that their publications meet international academic
standards; and encourage good academic practice globally (e.g. correct citation of sources).

We will never charge content providers for depositing their content in our database (or for the transfer method or
storage space required); indexing content is a free service we provide, which is mutually beneficial. In return, our
content providers usually waive all subscription fees, choosing to deposit their content with us free of charge.

Content provided to us is only used for the purposes of matching, in order to detect plagiarism or instances of poor
referencing. End users cannot „browse‟ or directly access any of the content deposited in our database. The
authors/content providers retain all copyrights/publication rights and can publish this content with whichever
publisher or content aggregator they wish to.

FAQs

Q: Do authors and/or content providers retain the copyrights/publication rights to their work?
A: Yes, they do. iThenticate only uses the content for the purposes of matching (we do not publish or disseminate
content, and it is not publicly available; so we do not require copyrights/publication rights to be transferred to us).

Q: Does iThenticate’s use of content for matching purposes infringe copyright?

A: No, it does not. As iThenticate do not publish, reproduce, or distribute the content; this does not infringe
copyright. An image of the source document is displayed so that users of the service can review the matching text
to determine if a case of plagiarism has occurred, but users cannot download a copy of the content source
document from within the service.

Q: Will the content stored in the iThenticate database be secure?

A: iThenticate‟s database conforms to the highest standards of security and privacy; using SSL encryption, secure
data centres, sophisticated firewalls and much more. We comply with the security standards of the US, the EU
and Switzerland.

Q: Who else chooses to index their content with iThenticate?

A: iThenticate has indexed over 45 million content items from over 675 of the world‟s largest academic publishers
(via the CrossCheck initiative); and close to 100 million content items from non--‐CrossCheck publishers and content
aggregators. Please refer to the Content Summary section of this document for a brief overview of our providers.

Q: Who are iThenticate’s customers?

A: iThenticate is used by thousands of academic publishers, content aggregators and government institutions
around the world, for originality checking of material prior to publication. It is also used by research for the
screening of grant/funding applications. Customers include academic presses such as Elsevier, Springer, Taylor &
Francis, and Wiley--‐Blackwell; and institutions such as the United Nations, the European Parliament, and the US
Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Furthermore, iThenticate‟s sister service (Turnitin) is used by over 1.6
million instructors, across 15,000 educational institutions, in 150 different countries.

Content Delivery Guide lines

Option 1 -‐ FTP

Two options are available:

● Push to our server

i. Our FTP information:
1. Server address: ftp.iparadigms.com
2. An account will be set up for you and login credentials provided
3. We recommend using a File Manager programme (e.g. Filezilla) to make the upload easier.

● Pull from vendor‟s server

i. The vendor will need to provide us with their server hostname and login credentials to allow us to
access the files.

Permanence: We make no guarantees as to when we will grab the data off of either our FTP server or the
vendor‟s, so it is advised to give the files/datasets unique names so that they are not overwritten by new content.
Many vendors choose to label their files/datasets with some sort of date or sequential numbering technique. We
can agree to a policy to delete the files off of either our server or vendor‟s server if vendor would like to know
what has been processed (though might still be in the pipeline and not able to matched against just yet)

Updates: In order to update existing content in our database, the new version of the content file will need to be
tagged with exactly the same unique identifier as the original file. The identifier could be something like a DOI,
ISBN number, etc. If we receive a piece of content tagged with an ID that we already have in our system, then we
will update that piece of content (for details on how to encode/tag your data, see Content section below)

Deletions: This is an extremely problematic procedure and is best avoided unless absolutely necessary. To do this
would require manual intervention by an engineer; and we would require as much metadata as possible for the
item to be deleted, to ensure that we correctly identify the item in question. In all cases, deletions cannot be
reversed; so vendors should bear this in mind before submitting such requests.
Our preference is to use either of the above FTP methods, but we also offer:

Option 2 – Web Crawl Solutions

The requirements are as follows:

● A seed webpage, i.e. a page that has links to all of the content items that require indexing
i. e.g. It could be a straight list of items where each item on the list includes a link to the relevant
content file.

● The seed webpage (and all subsequent links) needs to allow access without any authentication (no password
inputting, no captcha, etc)
i. Having said that, we can provide vendor a range of IP‟s that our crawler will come from and our
User--‐Agent which the vendor can use to authenticate the crawler when it accesses the website.

Important Considerations for web crawl method

● Content will go into our general Internet database; not into Publications.
● All pages to be crawled must be part of the same domain.
● No metadata will be associated with the content other than the URL.
● The seed webpage and URLs must not be using HTTPS.

For both of these Delivery Methods see the “Content” section below.
Content
Content is made up of two parts:

1. The actual textual content (the data)

2. The metadata that describes the content (the metadata)
These two pieces together make up a dataset. In addition, a dataset has a particular layout on disk. Both the
files that make up a dataset and the layout of a dataset are important.

Dataset Requirements

1. CSV or XLS metadata file + data files

a. The CSV or XLS file containing the metadata:
Fields should be as follows: Unique ID, Author(s), Title, Publication, Publisher, Publication ,
Language, URL, File Path

b. The File Path in the CSV file needs to match exactly (including spacing and capitalisation) to
the path of the data file provided

Examples

sample.zip unzips to:

metadata.csv:

Data File Requirements

1. Acceptable Filetypes: PDF, DOC, DOCX, RTF, HTML, Plain Text.

2. Must be encoded using UTF--‐8 or ASCII character set.
3. Must be machine readable (i.e. not embedded in an image, encoded or encrypted).
4. Must not be password protected.

Metadata File Requirements

5. Same as points 1 -‐ 4 above

Each document must be cross--‐referenced (i.e. by filename or ISBN) with the document‟s citation information and a
URL if the content is available via the web. The citation information must, at a minimum consist of all citation
information required to support MLA, Chicago, Harvard and APA citation styles. At least one document identifier (i.e.
ISSN, ISBN, and/or DOI) must be included. The citation elements consisting of author, title, version or edition must be
included. The citation information should be available in one of the standard citation database formats (i.e. Bib Tex,
Endnote/Refer/BibIX, Medline, MODS XML or RIS). Documents shall be delivered to Turnitin via FTP, using an Turnitin
FTP server or client FTP server
