perlu memahami apa sih cause and effect itu? Untuk itu, yuk kita lihat definisi dari cause
dan effect berikut:
a) Cause b) Effect

- alasan atau motif terjadinya sesuatu - hasil atau akibat suatu tindakan
- mengapa sesuatu terjadi - jawaban pertanyaan “apa yg terjadi?”
- terjadi lebih dulu - terjadi setelah cause

Kata cause dalam bahasa Inggris bisa
masuk ke dalam kategori noun atau pun
verb. Pada noun berarti seseorang atau
sesuatu yang menyebabkan sesuatu
terjadi. Pada verb berarti tindakan yang
membuat sesuatu terjadi.
Contoh:
- The cause (noun) of fire was the
electrical short (Penyebab terjadinya
kebakaran tersebut adalah konslet
listrik)
- The electrical short caused (verb) the
fire. (Konslet listrik menyebabkan
kebakaran)
effect bisa kita lihat dalam kalimat
noun atau verb. Pada noun berarti
perubahan yang merupakan akibat dari
suatu tindakan atau sebab. Sedangkan
dalam verb, effect ditulis menjadi affect
yang berarti menghasil sebuah efek atau
menyebabkan perubahan pada sesuatu.
Contoh:
- Did the noise have an effect (noun) on
your concentration? (Apakah
kebisingan memiliki efek pada
konsentrasimu?)
- Did the noise affect (verb) your
concentration? (Apakah kebisingan
mempengaruhi konsentrasimu?)

Jika kita bicara tentang Cause, berikut signal word yang biasa dipakai:

Long Drought 2011

Drought during 2011 has caused many problems. First, the people lack of clean water to either
take a bath, wash clothes of drink. Consequently, the government has to spend more
expenditure in social welfare. Second, many breeders do not find grass for their cattle, sheep
and goats. As result, their animals get thinner day after day due to lack of enough food.
Third, many farmers who depend on rainfall can’t cultivates their land. Consequently, they do
not get regular income from agribusiness. This also causes the farmer labors of losing their
jobs. Therefore, poverty rate gets increased this year. Finally, the drought has a great impact
on the water reservoir: dams, lake, Canal. Their water levels go down of even totally dry. All
of those conditions are clearly due to mono cause that is long drought in our country.
