Definition of Recount Text

Recount text is a text that tell the reader about one story, action or activity. Its goal is to
entertain or inform the reader.
(sebuah teks yang menceritakan sebuah cerita, aksi ataupun aktifitas. Tujuan recount text
adalah untuk menghibur atau memberi informasi kepada pembaca) Or (atau)
Recount is a text which retells event or experiences in the past. (sebuah teks yang
menceritakan kembali kejadian atau pengalaman di masa lampau).

Purpose
Its purpose is either to inform or to entertain the readers

Generic Structure of Recount Text

Untuk membedakan dari teks bahasa Inggris yang lain, recount text memiliki struktur atau
kerangka sebagai berikut:

# Orientation : It gives the readers the background information needed to understand the text,
such as who was involved, where it happened, and when it happened. ini menjelaskan tentang
latar (setting) waktu, tempat, dan orang-orang yang terlibat dalam cerita pada teks tersebut.
Biasanya teks recount melibatkan kata ganti I (saya) atau we/our (kita) sebagai sudut
pandang (point of view) orang pertama.
# Events : A series of events, ordered in a chronological sequence.
 Bagian events menjelaskan tentang kejadian-kejadian yang berlangsung secara kronologis di
masa lampau dan dituangkan secara berurutan
# Re-orientation :A personal comment about the event or what happened in the end.
 (penutup cerita): Bagian ini bersifat opsional. Menjelaskan tentang akhir dari kejadian-kejadian
dalam teks

The Characteristics / Language Feature* of Recount Text:

*Make special features that make it different from other texts
1. Use Simple Past Tense
Untuk membentuk kalimat simple past tense, rumusnya adalah sebagai berikut

S + Verb 2 + O (+)

I and my girlfriend went to the restaurant yesterday

S + did + not +verb 1 (-)

I did not sleep well last night..

Did+ subject + verb 1(?)

Did the student come to school?

Dalam kalimat simple past tense, kata kerja yang digunakan merupakan bentuk kata kerja
kedua. Terdapat dua jenis kata kerja, yakni regular verb dan irregular verb.

Untuk regular verb, tambahkan -ed/-d dibelakang setelah kata kerja bentuk pertama. Sebagai
contoh:

 Stay – stayed (Tinggal)
 Punch – Punched (Memukul)
 Play – Played (Bermain)
 Touch – Touched (Menyentuh)
Untuk irregular verb , termasuk didalamnya to be, bentuk kata kerja keduanya sangat berbeda.
Sebagai contoh:

 Awake – Awoke (Terbangun)
 Begin – Began (Memulai)
 Drink – Drank (Minum)
 Eat – ate (Makan)
 Run – ran (Berlari)
Namun, ada sebagian irregular verb yang memiliki bentuk kata kerja yang sama dengan bentuk
kata kerja dasar. Sebagai contoh:

 Put – Put (Meletakkan)
 Split – Split (Membagi)
 Spread – Spread (Menyebarkan)
 Set – Set (Mengatur)
 Cut – Cut (Memotong)

2. Menggunakan kata ganti (pronoun):she, they, my, their, your, dll

3. Menggunakan konjungsi urutan waktu (chronological connector); then, first day, second
day. Last day, after that, finally, dll
4. Menggunakan kata kerja konektif (linking verb);was, were, saw, heard, looked so, seem
to be, dll
5. Menggunakan frasa kata sifat (adjective phrase): very amazing, so impressed, happy,
bautiful, good enough, dll.
6. Menggunakankata kerja tindakan (action verb);looked, went, changed, swam,slep,dll

Some different things between Narative Text and Recount Text :

1. Generic structure
-Narrative text terdiri atas ( Orientation, complication dan resolution) sedangkan recount text
terdiri atas ( orientation, event, dan reorientation ).
-Narrative menghadirkan konflik dalam cerita, sedangkan recount text tidak menghadirkan
konflik dan hanya mejelaskan tentang urutan peristiwa atau kejadian yang terjadi secara detail.
2. Time on the event
-Narrative text mempunyai bentuk waktu yang tidak pasti karena menggunakan kalimat “ once
upon a time ” berbeda dengan recount text dimana waktu terjadinya suatu peristiwa atau
kejadian yang pasti.

  Last week was a terrible day for me. My cousin and I were playing football infront of the
house to spend time with us .

   First, it was really fun until I kicked the ball too strong, so the ball leaded me to the window
and broke the windo. When we want to escape, all of a sudden we all heard a loud voice.
After that, the owner of the house came out of the fence, he yelled at us. We are very afraid
of her, but we do not know what to do. Then, one of my cousins told us to run, we all ran,
and suddenly we heard the sound of skin. Then we know that homeowners allow dogs to
chase us. And we were struggling to run as fast as her as we can.
