Abstract—In this paper, robust design of multimachine power system stabilizers (PSSs) using multi-

objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) is presented. The problem of selecting the stabilizer
parameters is converted to an optimization problem with integral square error (ISE) and integral of
time multiplied absolute value of the error (ITAE)-based objective functions. The MOPSO is
employed to search for optimal PSS parameters for a wide range of operating conditions. The
performance of the proposed MOPSO based PSSs is investigated for a three machine nine-bus
system under different configurations. The effectiveness of the proposed approach in enhancing the
dynamic stability of power systems is confirmed through eigenvalue analysis and nonlinear
simulation results.

Abstrak — Dalam makalah ini, desain kuat penstabil sistem daya multimachine (PSS) menggunakan
multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) disajikan. Masalah memilih parameter

An optimal multi-objective design for multimachine power system stabilizers using MOPSO
technique has been proposed. The stabilizers are tuned to simultaneously minimize the two
performance indices ISE and ITAE . The design problem of the robustly PSSs parameters selection is
converted into an optimization problem which is solved by a MOPSO technique. The nonlinear time-
domain simulation results show that the proposed PSSs work effectively over a wide range of loading
conditions. The eigenvalues analysis reveals the effectiveness of the proposed PSSs to damp out
local as well as inter-areas modes of oscillations.

Abstract²In this paper, integral of time multiplied squared error (ITSE), integral of squared time
multiplied squared error (ISTSE), and integral of squared time multiplied error squared (ISTES)
performance indices are applied in coordinated design problem of power system stabilizer (PSS) and
thyristor controlled series capacitor (TCSC) based power oscillation damping (POD) controller.
Employing these competent indices can help in suppressing the electromechanical (EM) oscillations
more effectively than commonly employed integral of time multiplied absolute error (ITAE) index,
since they have larger powers of time and error that can affect the settling time and peak error of
dynamic responses, respectively. The coordinated design is formulated as an optimization problem
in which the controller parameters are adjusted simultaneously via particle swarm optimization
(PSO) algorithm by minimizing proposed indices in which some operating conditions are considered
to guarantee robust design. Eigenvalue analysis and time domain simulations are performed in
MATLAB/SIMULINK environment on 2 area 4 machine (2A4M) power system over different
disturbances and operating conditions. Results show that superior enhancement in damping of EM
oscillations is obtained by employing proposed indices. Meantime, a comparative study among

In this study, optimal multiobjective design of robust multi-machine power system stabilizers (PSSs)
using GA is proposed. The approach effectiveness is validated on two multi-machine power systems.
In this paper,

the performance of proposed GAPSS is compared with conventional speed-based lead-lag PSS. A

multi objective problem is formulated to optimize a composite set of objective functions comprising
the

damping factor, and the damping ratio of the lightly damped electromechanical modes. The problem
of

tuning the parameters of the power system stabilizers is converted to an optimization problem
which is

solved by GA with the eigen value-based multi-objective function. Eigen value analysis under
different

operating conditions reveals that undamped and lightly damped oscillation modes are shifted to a
specific

stable zone in the s-plane. These results show the potential of GA algorithm for optimal settings of
PSS

parameters. The nonlinear time-domain simulation results show that the proposed PSSs work
effectively

over a wide range of loading conditions and system configurations.
