MATERI INISIASI 8 Introduction to english literature

PERIODE INGGRIS MODERN ( 1900-1950 )

Kemajuan pesat di bidang ilmu dan teknologi di zaman modern membawa manusia pada
suatu kehidupan yang serba berkecukupan di bidang sandang, papan dan pangan, khususnya
di Eropa Barat dan Amerika Utara. Di bidang kesehatan jauh lebih baik dan jumlah penduduk
berkembang pesat karena pelayanan kesehatan tersebut. Namun disisi lain periode ini
dianggap pula sebagai periode kehancuran dan kesengsaraan sebagai akibat perang dunia I
dan II. Dua perang dunia tersebut telah menyebabkan 2/3 penduduk dunia terancam
kelaparan.

CIRI-CIRI KARYA SASTRA PADA PERIODE INGGRIS MODERN

Karya sastra di periode ini kurang berkembang disebabkan karena :

Suasana yang membawa masyarakat Inggris tidak memiliki imajinasi dan inspirasi
Para pengarang muda lebih cenderung bersifat menghindar dari masyarakat ramai.
Kesusasteraan tidak lagi mendapat tempat di hati masyarakat.
Kesusasteraan dianggap hanya santapan bagi sekelompok kecil masyarakat yang berbudaya.

Namun ada karya sastra dalam bentuk prosa masih mendapat tepat terhormat.
