THE SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE

A. Pengertian Simple Present Tense

Simple Present Tense adalah bentuk tense yang digunakan untuk menjelaskan sesuatu yang terjadi saat ini (present) pada
suatu spesifik waktu. Karena terjadi pada waktu sekarang, maka pasti menggunakan kata kerja pertama (verb 1) dalam
susunan kalimatnya.

Bentuk Rumus Simple Present Tense contoh Kalimat

(+) · Subject + verb 1 (+ s/es) + object · I use social media

· Subject + to be (am/is/are) + adjective/adverb · She is very polite and kind

(-) · Subject + do/does not + verb 1 + … · They do not use social media
· Subject + to be (am/is/are) + not + adjective/adverb · She is not very polite and kind

(?) · Do/does + subject + verb 1 + object? · Does he use social media?

· To be (am/is/are) + subject + adjective/adverb? · Is she polite and kind?

B. Subject-Verb Agreement
Meskipun formulanya terlihat mudah, banyak dari pengguna simple tense tidak teliti dengan subject-verb agreement pada
kalimat yang mereka gunakan. Subject-verb agreement adalah ketentuan pemasangan subjek dan kata kerja yang
mengikutinya.  Untuk kalimat simple present tense, subject-verb agreement yang harus diikuti adalah sebagai berikut:

I / You / We / They He / She / It

· Untuk kalimat positif, kata kerja tidak diikuti imbuhan s/es. · Untuk kalimat positif, kata kerja diikuti imbuhan
Contoh Kalimat: s/es.
I go to school Contoh Kalimat:
He goes to school
· Untuk kalimat negatif, do not atau don’t digunakan sebelum kata
kerja. · Untuk kalimat negatif, does not atau doesn’t
Contoh: digunakan sebelum kata kerja.
We do not attend class together Contoh:
He does not attend class with me
· Untuk kalimat interogatif, kata do mengawali kalimat.
Contoh: · Untuk kalimat interogatif, does mengawali kalimat.
Do you finish your homework? Contoh:
Does she finish your homework?

Untuk kalimat yang menggunakan to be, bentuk harus selalu dalam present tense, yaitu is / am / are, yang pastinya
mengikuti subjeknya.

Tentunya kita tidak mau membuat kesalahan yang seharusnya sangat bisa dihindari ini. Oleh karena itu, subject-verb
agreement harus diperhatikan secara teliti ketika menggunakan simple present tense.

C. Penggunaan Simple Present Tense

Kita telah mengetahui pengertian dan rumus simple present tense. Untuk bisa menggunakannya dengan tepat, kita juga harus
bisa memahami penggunaannya, yaitu sebagai berikut:

Penggunaan Contoh Kalimat Simple Present Tense

a) Untuk menyatakan suatu fakta · Sociolinguistics is the study of the relationship

between language and social environment
· The sun rises from the east

b) Untuk menggambarkan kebiasaan atau kejadian yang
dilakukan berkali-kali dalam bingkai waktu sekarang.
Biasanya menggunakan adverb of frequency seperti: always,
never, sometimes, often, seldom, dan lain-lain.
· My father wakes up at 5 am every morning
· The postman always delivers the mail on the
morning
· I often check my assignment several times before
submitting it to my teacher

c) Untuk menggambarkan perasaan atau emosi. · I love my parents to the moon and back
Biasanya menggunakan kata kerja statis (stative verbs) seperti · She feels anxious waiting for her cat to come back
feel, worry, love, dan lain-lain. · We worry about his current condition

d) Simple present tense untuk mengungkapkan kepemilikan · My company has 70 branches all over the world
dan hubungan logis. · They own three supercars.
 Biasanya menggunakan stative verbs seperti has/have, own, · The laptop belongs to me.
belong, consist, dan lain-lain. · It consists of chocolate and cheese
 

e) Untuk menyampaikan pendapat dan pikiran · I think it is better if people use public
transportation more often than their personal cars
· I agree that death penalty should be revoked

f) Digunakan pada kalimat instruksi · Pour some salt into the egg and mix them well
