ABSTRACT
Hypertension is the number one deadly disease in the world because hypertension
is a prime contributor to cardiovascular disease and stroke, because of this
hypertension is often known as the silent killer. The factors of hypertension are
lifestyle (alcohol, smoking), anxiety, social status tension, obesity (overweight),
lack of sport, heredity, stress, and personality type. This study aims to analyze the
relationship between personality types and the incidence of hypertension. The
research design used a descriptive correlational design with a cross sectional
approach. The sample used in this study was 84 respondents selected in this study
using consecutive sampling technique. The data were collected by measuring the
patient's blood pressure and distributing questionnaire of a personality type. Data
analysis used spearman rank correlation test with a significant level of 0.05. The
result analysis showed 16 sanguine respondents, 54 choleric respondents, 10
melancholic respondents, and 4 phlegmatic respondents, while the average
systolic blood pressure was 149.31, the mean score was 146 with a minimum
value of 120 and a maximum of 195. There was a correlation between personality
types and the incidence of hypertension at the polylinic of Baladhika Husada
Class III Hospital Jember (p-value <0.026 and r = 0.815). The choleric personality
type has more shortcomings of irritability and stress than other personality types.
A study shows that high intensity of anger can suppress angry expressions and can
increase the occurrence of a person experiencing high blood pressure. The role of
nurses in dealing with stress is to teach patients to control their stress, for example
is being disciplined and diligent in go through of life also getting used to behaving
in a healthy life, always being patient and sincere in controlling their feelings, as
well as their desires and ambitions.
