COORDINATE CONNECTORS

Many sentences in English have more than one clause. (A clause is a group of words containing a
subject and a verb). When you have two clauses in an English sentence, you must connect the two
clauses correctly. One way to connect two clauses is to use and, but, or, or so between the clauses.

(Banyak kalimat dalam bahasa Inggris memiliki lebih dari satu klausa. (Klausa adalah sekelompok
kata yang berisi subjek dan kata kerja). Jika Anda memiliki dua klausa dalam kalimat bahasa Inggris,
Anda harus menghubungkan kedua klausa dengan benar. Satu cara untuk menghubungkan dua
klausa adalah dengan menggunakan dan and, tapi but, atau, jadi so lebih antar klausa.)

The sun was shining, and the sky was blue

(Matahari bersinar, dan langit biru)

The sky was blue, but it was very cold

(Langit biru, tapi sangat dingin)

It may rain tonight, or it may be clear

(Mungkin hujan malam ini, atau mungkin cerah)

It was raining outside, so I took my umbrella.

(Di luar hujan, jadi saya mengambil payung saya)

In each of these examples there are two clauses that are correctly joined with a coordinate
connector – ed, but, or, so – and a comma (,).
(Dalam masing-masing contoh ini ada dua klausa yang digabungkan dengan benar dengan konektor
koordinat - ed, but, or, so - dan koma (,).)

The following examples shows how this sentence pattern could be tasted in the Structure
section of the TOEFL test.

Example:
I forgot my coat, ______ I got very cold
(Saya lupa mantel saya, ______ Saya kedinginan)
(A) then
(B) so
(C) later
(D) as a result

(A) lalu (B) jadi (C) nanti (D) sebagai hasilnya

In this example, you should notice quickly that there are two clauses, I forgot my coat and I got very
cold. This sentence needs a connector to join the two clauses. Then, later and as a result are not
connectors, so answers (A), (C), and (D) are not correct. The best answer is answer (B) because so
can connect two clauses in this manner.

(Dalam contoh ini, Anda harus segera memperhatikan bahwa ada dua pasal, saya lupa mantel saya
dan saya menjadi sangat kedinginan. Kalimat ini membutuhkan konektor untuk menggabungkan
kedua klausa. Kemudian, nanti dan akibatnya bukan konektor, jadi jawaban (A), (C), dan (D) tidak
 benar. Jawaban terbaik adalah jawaban (B) karena dapat menghubungkan dua klausa dengan cara
ini.)

8. ____ the dress did not cost too much, but the quality it seemed excellent
9. ____ the leaves kept falling off the trees, and the boys kept raking them up, but the yard was still
covered
10. ____ the mail carrier has already delivered the mail, so the letter is not going to arrive today, it
probably will arrive tomorrow.

Contoh :
1. ____ Rumput membutuhkan air setiap hari, atau akan berubah menjadi coklat
2. ____ Buku itu tidak panjang tapi sulit untuk dibaca
3. ____ Saat itu hujan, jadi putuskan untuk tidak pergi berkemah
4. ____ bahan telah dipotong, dan potongan-potongan telah dijahit menjadi satu
5. ____ pasien meminum semua obat, dia tidak merasa jauh lebih baik
6. ____ tagihan harus dibayar segera, atau listrik akan mati
7. ____ tungku sehingga rumah menjadi dingin
8. Gaun ____ harganya tidak terlalu mahal, tapi kualitasnya terkesan prima
9. ____ dedaunan terus berguguran dari pohon, dan anak laki-laki terus menyapu, tetapi halaman
masih tertutup
10. ____ pengirim surat sudah mengirimkan surat, jadi suratnya tidak akan sampai hari ini, mungkin
akan sampai besok.

    Analisa:
 Kedua Klausa diatas sudah benar, begitu juga dengan Coordinate Connectornya. 
 2. The book was not long, it difficult to read. (I)

    Analisa:
 Klausa kedua tidak memiliki verb (is) dan  Connector.
 Kalimat yang benar adalah The book was not long, but  it is difficult to read.

3. It was raining, so decided not to go camping. (I)

    Analisa:
 Klausa/kalimat kedua tidak memiliki Subject. Tapi sudah memiliki connector, so.
 Kalimat yang benar seharusnya adalah It was raining, so  I  decided not to go
camping.

4. The material has been cut, and the pieces have been sewn together.(C)

    Analisa:
 Kedua kalimat/klausa sudah benar begitu juga dengan connectornya

5. The patient took all the medicine, he did not feel much better.(I)

    Analisa:
 Kedua kalimat/klausa diatas sudah benar, tapi belum ada connectornya.
 Kalimat yang benar seharusnya adalah The patient took all the medicine,  but  he did
not feel much better.

6. The bill must be paid immediately, or the electricity will be turned off. (C)
    
    Analisa:
 Kedua kalimat/klausa diatas sudah benar, begitu juga dengan connector (so) nya.

7. The furnace broke so the house got quite cold. (I)

    Analisa:
 Kedua kalimat diatas sudah benar, begitu juga dengan connector (so) nya.
 Tapi tidak ada koma sebelum so sehingga kalimat diatas salah. Kalimat yang benar
seharusnya The furnace broke,  so the lounge got quite cold.

8. The dress did not cost too much, but the quality it seemed excellent. (I)

    Analisa:
 Kalimat.klausa kedua memiliki double subject, yaitu   the quality dan it. Salah satunya
harus di hapus untuk membuat kalimat tersebut benar.
 Connector (but) sudah benar.
 Kalimat yang benar seharusnya The dress did not cost too much, but the quality
seemed excellent 
 9. The leaves kept falling off the trees, and the boys kept raking them up, but the yard
was still covered. (C)

    Analisa:
 Ketiga klausa/kalimat diatas sudah benar, begitu juga dengan connectornya (and,
but)

10. The mail carrier has already delivered the mail, so the letter is not going to arrive
today, it probably will arrive tomorrow.

     Analisa:

 Ketiga klausa/kalimat diatas sudah benar, tapi connector so salah karena. Seharusnya
adalah but.
 Kalimat yang benar seharusnya The mail carrier has already delivered the
mail,  but  the letter is not going to arrive today, .......
