(stone pillar bearing an inscription) known as the Rosetta stojle. This
famous stone, which would eventually iead to the deciphering of ancient
Egyptian hieroglyphics dating to 3100 8.C., was written in three
lanluages: hierogiyphics (picture writing), demotic (a shorthand
version of hieroglyphics), and Greek. Scientists discover,ed i.hat the
characters, unlikeiiror" in English, could be written frcm'right to ielt
and in othei directions as wel!.
Twenty-three years after discovery of the Rosetta stone, Jean Fran-
qois Champollion. a French philologist, fluent in several lartguages, was
able to decipher the first word-Ptolemy-name of an Egyptian ruler.
This nams wBS written inside an oval called a "cartouche." Further

investigation revealed that cartouches contained names of important

people of that period. Champollion painstakingly continued his search
and was able to increase his growing list of known phonetic signs. He
and ari-Engiishman. Thomas Young, worked independently of each
other to unrave.l the deeply hi<iden mysteries of this strange language.
Young believed thai sound values could be assigned to the symbols,
