Salah satu tuntutan dari kompetesi guru adalah

menulis, baik menulis karya ilmiah atau nonilmiah. Namun
Sementara
gurunya tidak melakukan hal yang sama.
Persepsi ini harus diperbaiki karena siswa dan
guru serta stakeholder sekolah adalah bagian yang
tidak terpisahkan dari gerakan literasi sekolah. Semua
bertanggungjawab atas terwujudnya gerakan literasi
nasional lewat sekolah. Siswa paham dan mengerti literasi,
gurunya juga mempraktikkan literasi dalam praktik-praktik

SUCCESS FACES ENGLISH NATIONAL EXAMINATION iii

baik berliterasi.
praktik baik berliterasi, membacakreatif, menuliskreatif,
diskusikreatifdansebagainya.
berusaha menerbitkan tulisan mereka menjadi satu buku.
iv SUCCESS FACES ENGLISH NATIONAL EXAMINATION
depan kabupaten Barru padak hususnya.
Selamat bagi para guru penulis.

A Friendly Clown

On one corner of my dresser sits a smiling toy

clown on a tiny unicycle-a gift I received last Christmas
from a close friend. The clown’s short yellow hair, made
of yarn, covers its ears but is parted above the eyes. The
blue eyes are outlined in black with thin, dark lashes
flowing from the brows. It has cherry-red cheeks, nose,
and lips, and its broad grin disappears into the wide,
white ruffle around his neck. The clown wears a fluffy,
two-tone nylon costume. The left side of the outfit is light
blue, and the right side is red. The twc colors merge in
a dark line that runs down the center of the small outfit.
Surrounding its ankles and disguising white spokes on
the wheels of the unicycle gather in the center and expand
to the black tire so that the wheel somewhat resembles

Geyser

A geyser is the result of underground water under the

combined conditions of high temperatures and increased
pressure beneath the surface of the earth. Since temperature
rises approximately 1 OF for every sixty feet under the earth’s
surface, and pressure increases with depth, the water that seeps
down in crack and fissures until it reaches very hot rock in the
earth interior becomes heated to temperature in excess of 2900F.
Because of the greater pressure, the water shoots out of the
surface in the form of steam and hot water. The result is a geyser.
in order to function, then a geyser must have a source of heat,
reservoir where water can be stored until the temperature rises

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon was a man-made
structure that was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient
World. The Hanging Gardens originated in approximately 605
B.C.
Babylon, the capital of Babylonia, was built between the
Euphrates and Tigris Rivers, where modern Baghdad, in Iraq,
stands today. King Nebuchadnezzar built the Hanging Gardens
for his wife, Amytis, who was the Princess of the Medes.
The Hanging Gardens was built on arches overlooking
the city walls. The lowest terrace was twenty-four meters off
the ground and each succeeding terrace was three meters higher.
There were about six terraces, so that the topmost terrace was
forty meters off the ground.
The first stage of the building was a series of brick
archways that were the same height as the city walls. Underneath
them lay a shaded courtyard. On top of these arches, the
Babylonians built long brick terraces in rows.
These terraces were lined with lead to hold the water.
They covered with thick layers of fertile soil. Many exotic plants
and trees were planted. Each flower-bed was the size of a tennis
court and the area of each terrace was thirty meters long by five
meters long by five meters wide.

Last month my family and I went to Toraja to attend

Grandpa’s funeral. It was my first time to go to such a ceremony.

week. Several days before the ceremony was done, grandpa’s
body was kept in a series of houses arranged in a circular row
around an open field called tongkonan. His corpse was dressed
in a fine wearing.
The funeral was performed in two phases. First, we
slaughtered the pigs and buffaloes, and then moved the corpse
to face north. In this ceremony we wore blackclothes. After
that, the corpse was placed in a sandal wood coffin. Then, it
was brought out of the house and placed on an open platform
beneath the granary. Meanwhile, my uncle, my brother, and I
prepared the wooden puppet and a funeral tower called lakian.
The next phase of the ceremony was held in this place. The c6ffn
is borne from the house and placed in the lakian. During the day,
there were also buffalo matches. They were great matches. In the
night, we were feasting, chanting, and dancing.
On the last day, the grandpa’s coffin were lowered from
the funerai tower and brought up to the mountain side family
graveyard. It was followed by great shouting and excitement

B. PENJELASAN REPORT TEXT
1. Definisi Report Text
Reportteks (teks report) merupakan teks yang
menerangkan tentang sebuah benda, orang, binatang,
hal, seperti tempat hidup, makanan, cara berkembang
biak, sifatnya, dan lain-lain.

sistematis.

3. Generic Stucture of Report Text

Generic structure atau susunan teks report terdiri atas
beberapa bagian sebagai berikut:
a. General classification merupakan pernyataan
umum yang biasanya menjelaskan seputar subjek
laporan, keterangan, dan klasifikasinya.
b. Description berisi gambaran peristiwa yang
terjadi, seperti bagian-bagian, sifat-sifatnya,
kebiasaannya, tingkah lakunya, dan lain-lain.
Disamping itu, penggambaran mengenai setiap
klasifikasi atau bagian pada teks ditulis secara

Pada umumnya, kitasering kesulitan untuk membedakan
antara teks report dan deskriptif. Berikut adalah beberapa
cara untuk membedakan kedua teks tersebut:
a. Lihatlah dengan teliti apakah teks itu dijelaskan
secara umum atau khusus. Jika suatu teks
dijelaskan secara umurn dan membahas lebih
dari satutopik, maka teks tersebut merupakan teks
report. Sebaliknya, apabila suatu teks dijelaskan
secara khusus, maka disebut teks deskriptif.
b. Contoh teks deskriptif dapat dilihat saat kita
akan membahas tentang Danau Toba, maka
kita akan menyebutkan letak, bagaimana danau
itu terbentuk, kapan terbentuknya, dan lain
sebagainya. Sebalikya, dalam teks report akan
membahas tentang bentuk.

trees, some live in water, but most live on the ground in deserted

Democracy is a form of government. The word

democracy means ruled by the people. Abraham Lincoln
described such self-government as government of the
people, by the people, for the people.

elected representatives is sometimes called a republican
government.

An electronic calculator is a small, portable electronic
device used to perform both basic operations of arithmetic and
complex mathematical operations. The first solid state electronic
calculator was created in the 1960s, building on the extensive
history of tools such as the abacus, developed around 2000 BC,
and the mechanical calculator, developed in the 17th century. It
was developed in parallel with the analog computers of the day.
Pocket sized devices became available in the 1970s,
especially after the invention of the microprocessor developed
by Intel for the Japanese calculator company Busicom.
Modern electronic calculators vary from cheap, give- away,
credit-card-sized models to sturdy desktop models with built-in
printers. They became popular in the mid- 1970s as integrated
circuits made their size and cost small. By the end of that decade,
calculator prices had reduced to a point where a basic calculator
was affordable to most and they became common in schools.
Computer operating systems as far back as early Unix have
included interactive calculator programs such as dc and hoc, and
calculator functions are included in almost all PDA-type devices
(save a few dedicated address book and dictionary devices).

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen

Thank you very much for the House of Representatives
which had invited me to give the peech concerning aboutthe
mystery sinetrons shown in many television presently. My
name is BudiSantoso, a lecturer at University ofIndonesia
majoring in mass communication. Here, Irepresent the
academics point of view about the subjectwe discuss this
morning.
As weknow, there are many mystery sinetrons shown
on television stations presently. The sinetrons depict horrible
scenes about the spirit world. It is described that
spirits often disturb people by frightening them in the
darkness, when they walk alone at night or at the cemetery.
Tie spirits are pictured as frightening appearance such as
white clothes flying corpse, shattered face copse etc. the
show must be abandoned for several reasons.
Firstly, it makes a wrong perception of people especially
children and women to do activity at nights, for example
going to the wells, even cooking at kitchen alone. How do
you fell if you always live in anxiety.
Thirdly, such kind of sinetrons waste out time to think
unreal phenomena while we are facing many kinds of living
problems.
In brief, for the reason, I think television station must
stop showing mystery sinetrons. They are bad influences for
people, frightening our children, and destroying their belief
to god.
Thank you very much for your attention.

Let's Make the City Clean and Fresh

A clean and fresh city will surely make the inhabitants

healthy. Every morning especially in dry season, all roads
must be watered with clean water and swept by the workers
of regional government under the Mayor's instruction.
To protect people from heavy pollution caused by cars,
trucks and motorcycles, enough trees must be planted
along the roads. Every building or house in the city must
be surrounded by short and small trees which bear colorful
flowers.
Bad and improper habits which cause disadvantages.
Such as smoking, and throwing rubbish anywhere should be
stopped at once.
The city mayor will have to think over the way to educate
people, so to realize how important cleanliness and health
are. More public lavatories are badly needed.
It will be wise if the city mayor decides a certain amount
of fine to be paid by those how break the government
regulation on cleanliness matter. For example, a man who
urinates not at a lavatory, smokes not at a smoking room or
throws rubbish at the roads should be fined. Besides dirtying
the environment with cigarettes' butts, smoking will also
cause pollution and bad lung diseases to other people.
So, bad habits and impolite attitude should be stopped
immediately, otherwise the city will be dirty, unhealthy,
badly polluted and will never attract foreign and domestic
tourists as well.

What is the benefit of tourism for local people? Well,

tourism is now a huge contributor to the economies of most
countries. Tourism industries can bring money, job vacancy

and advancement especially to developing regions. However,
this money often goes into the pockets of foreign investors,
and only rarely benefits for local people.
Tourism industries will not give much benefit for local
people if, for example, multinational hotel chains don't care
about the surrounding nature when they build new hotels.
This can cause many social, cultural and geographical
problems. Some local people may get job and money from
that international hotel chain. However in case of missing that
opportunity, some of them still have their own environment.
Moreover, some facts show that tourists tend to go,
visit and spend their money in restaurants, bars and even
luxury hotels of that multinational chains. They less go to
such places; restaurant, bar, hotel, shop which are owned
by local people. This can prevent the local people's business
from becoming even larger.
Most important thing, tours or excursions of tourism
'have little effect on nature. Even it can disrupt or destroy
ecosystems and environments, and if it does, the local people
get the risk.
So the local government policies should be put in place
ensure that tourism. will make the benefit spreading widely.
The policies should guarantee that tourism wilt not cause

Corruption has happened for many years and today it
becomes a bad culture in Indonesia for three reasons.
Most adult Indonesians or foreigners have known and
admitted that corruptions happen in many places. The daily
newspapers, news programs on TV and radio have reported
corruptions are done everywhere, almost in all departments
or public services of this country. Corruptions happen in
health, education departments and banks. When we manage
to get some documents in public service offices, we usually
need much money to pay. Manipulations happen everywhere.
The actions to eliminate corruption are weak. The
ever stronger culture seems not to come to an end when the
responsible institutions who have to reinforce the justice
today commit corruption. This is the worst. Corruptions
happen inpolice department, courts where judges, public
prosecutors, lawyers make deals to do corruption. All of us

also heard in the end of 2004, Probosutejo reported that he
had bribed the supreme Court, or calledMahkamah Agung
which becomes the highest level where the justice can be
obtained. Perhaps pu have to try to come to the local courts
and see what happen there. You will see practices of bribery
and other kinds. Therefore, we can say that corruptions
become culture. Do you like it?
The citizens have no goodwill to fight against the
corruption. They create the situations in which people have
Opportunities to do corruptions. The citizens like to break
the rules because they are not disciplined. For example, in
the met when they drive a car or ride motorcycle, they do
not the driving license or necessary documents. Then, they
caught by the local policemen. To avoid more difficulties, like
to bribe the officer. The officer let them go then. In words, the
citizens and officers are the same, doing comuption together.
If only the people were critical, disciplined, and obey
rules, and willing to report any wrong behaviors, this country
will not be number one corrupting country in the world.
Based on the reasons, we can conclude that corruption
is becoming a bad culture in Indonesia if it is not ended soon
by all of us. It seems that there must be more severe penalty
for the corruptors. Do we still care about the future of this
country?

Earthquake

Earthquake is one of the most destroying natural disasters.

Unluckily it often happens in several regions. Recently a horrible
earthquake has shaken West Sumatra. It has brought great
damages. Why did it occur? Do you know how an earthquake
happens?
Earthquakes are usually caused when rock underground
suddenly breaks along a fault. This sudden release of energy
causes the seismic waves. It makes the ground shake. When two
blocks of rock or two plates are rubbing against each other, they
stick a little. They don't just slide smoothly. The rocks are still
pushing against each other, but not moving. After a while, the
rocks break because of all the pressure that's built up. When the
rocks break, the earthquake occurs.
During the earthquake and afterward, the plates or blocks
of rock start moving, and they continue to move until they get
stuck again. The spot underground where the rock breaks is
called the focus of the earthquake. The place right above the
focus is called the epicenter of the earthquake.

The moisture loaded air coals as it rises. This is because
the air expands as it rises. Once the air starts to rise it will

rising and cooling continues long enough the air will become
saturated. If the air is then cooled below that point, it is said to
have reaches the dew point. When air reached the dew point,
some of the water vapour the air contains condenses into tiny
particles of water, so fine that they might be called water dust.
Thiswater dust is known as clouds or fog, according to whether
it is high in the air or near the surface the earth. A still greater
cooling of the air will cause tiny cloud particles to unite into
drops so large and heavy that they fall.

The following text is for question 4 to 7.

When fossil fuels, or other fuels, such as wood or peat, are

burned, carbon dioxide is released into atmosphere. Vehiclesalso
give out, and add, carbon dioxide to the atmosphere.
The Earth’s atmosphere allows most of the sun’s ray to
pass through it to heat the Earth’s surface. The Earth reflects
much of the heat energy back into the atmosphere, but mush
of this reflected radiation cannot escape gases such as carbon
dioxide absorb it. They grow warm and send heat radiation back
to Earth. This is the greenhouse effect. Many scientists think
that the greenhouse effect may change the climate, over the next
100 years or so. One consequence of sealed “global warming”
resulting from the green-houseeffect could floor large areas of
highly populated coastal land.
If carbon dioxide proves to be as harmful as thought. In
order to reduce carbon dioxide levels we need to reduce the
amounts of carbon-rich fuels burned.

The following text is for question number 8 to 10.

Photosynthesis is the process of converting solar energy to

chemical energy and storing it in bonds of sugar. This process
occurs in plants and some algae (Kingdom Protista). Plants need
only solar energy, CO2 and H2O to make sugar. The process
of photosynthesis takes in the chloroplasts, the green pigment
involved in photosynthesis.
98 SUCCESS FACES ENGLISH NATIONAL EXAMINATION
Photosynthesis takes place primarily in plant leaves,
and little to none occurs in stems, etc. The parts of a typical
leaf include the upper and lower epidermis, the mesophyll, the
vascular bundle (s) (veins), and the stomates. The upper and lower
epidermal cells do not have .chloroplasts, thus photosynthesis
does not occur there. They serve primarily as protection for
the rest of the leaf The stomates are holes which which occur
primarily in the lower epidermis and are for air exchange: they
let C02 in and 02 out. The vascular bundles or veins in a leaf
are part of the plant’s transportation system, moving water and
nutrients around the plant as needed. The mesophyll cells have
choloro-plasts and this is where photosynthesis occurs.
As you hopefully recall, the parts of a chloroplast include
the outer and inner membranes, intermembrane space, stroma,
and thylakoids stacked in grana. The chlorophyll is built into the
membranes of the thylakoids.
Chlorophyll looks green because it absorbs the red and
blue light, making these colors unavailable to be seen by our
eyes. It is the green light which is not absorbed that finally
reaches our eyes, making chlorophyll appear green. However, it
is the energy from the red and blue light that are absorbed that is,
thereby, able to be used to do photosynthesis. The green light we
can see is not/cannot be absorbed by the plant, and thus cannot
be used to do photosynthesis.

8. What function of the upper and lower epidermis…

A. To let C02 in and 02 out.
B. To enable photosynthesis.
C. To absorb leaf green lights. .
D. To protect the rest of the leaf.
E. To transport the nutrient.

9. What is the main idea of paragraph 4...

A. The plans can be colorful in absorbing the photosynthesis
process.

The Advantage and Disadvantage of Nuclear Power

1. Nuclear power is generated by using uranium which is a

metal mined in various part of the world. The first large
scale of nuclear power station was opened at Calder
Hall in Cumbria, England in 1956.
2. Some military ships and submarines have nuclear
power plant for engine. Nuclear power produces around
11% of the world's energy needed, and produces huge
amounts of energy. It cause no pollution as we would
get when burning fossil fuels. The advantages of nuclear
plant are as follow:
a. It costs about the same coal, so it is not expansive
to make.
b. It does not produce smoke or carbon dioxide, so it

Giving Children Homework: Pro and Con

There are a lot of discussions as to whether children should

be given homewcrk or not. Is it
enough for children having time to study at school cr needing
additional time at home to study after school time?
Some people claim that children dc enough work in school
already. They also argue that children have their hobbies which
they want to do after 5±001, such as sport or music. A further
point they make is that a lot of homework is pointless and does
not help thechildren learn at all.
However, there are also strong arguments against this point
of view. Parents and teachers argue that it is important to find
out whether children can work on their own withoutthe support
from the teacher. They say that the evening is a good time for
children to sit down and think about what they have learned in
school.
Furthermore they claim that the school day is too short
to get anything done. It rnekes sense to send home tasks .fike
independent reading or further writing task which does not need
the teacher's support.
I think, on balance, that some homework is a good idea but
that should only given at the weekend when children have more

Pros and Cons of Electric Vehicles

As with any type of vehicle, there are numerous pros and
cons of electric vehicles (EVs).
The main advantage of an electric vehicle is the elimination
of fuel. Without the need for gasoline or diesel, EVs produce
zero emissions. This effectively makes them the greenest cars
presently on the market Additionally, electric cars are superiorly
quiet when compared to gasoline-powered vehicles. Another
benefit of electric cars is their relatively simple construction.
Though an electric car benefits +from zero emissions,
there are still several limitations to the technology that may
turn you off from the eco-friendly EV. For most people, these
reduced ranges still leave plenty of wiggle room for daily driving
(the average American’s commute is 33 miles). However, if you
drive a lot, or enjoy the occasional road trip, then an electric
vehicle may not meet your needs. An issue that compounds this
problem is recharge time. Sure, you can avoid trips to the gas
station by plugging your vehicle right into any 220-volt outiet,
but it’l! likely take a full eight hours to achieve a complete
battery recharge (though 20-minute quick-charge stations may
114 SUCCESS FACES ENGLISH NATIONAL EXAMINATION
be available in limited locations).
Electric engines are also not as powerful as gas engines. Top
speed tends to max out around 60 to 70 mph (or less for smaller
EVs). As such, EVs aren’t really the best cars for long stints on
the highway. Finally, electric vehicles are more expensive than
comparable gasoline vehicles. The reason for these inflated price
tags is the high costs associated with building the lithium-ion
batteries that are required to power the electric motor.

B. EV needs 8 hours in recharging the battery.
C. EV is the most powerful car.
D. EV cannot be operated in the narrow street.
E. EV cannot run above 60 or 70 mph

will always hold a special place in my heart.
Evaluasi 1
I have to say that of all of the books, however, this was not
my favorite.
Evaluagi 2
When the series began it was as much of a "feel good"
experience as a huge mug of hot cocoa. The stories were bright,
fast-paced, intriguing, and ultimately satisfying.
Interpretation
Order of the Phoenix is a different kind of book. In some
instances this works, you feel a whole new level of intensity and
excitement by the time you get to the end. I was truly moved
by the last page. Other times the book just has a slightly dreary,
depressing feel. The galloping pace of the other books has

118 SUCCESS FACES ENGLISH NATIONAL EXAMINATION

slowed to a trot here, and parts of it do seem long, as if we're
reading all about Harry "just hanging out" instead of having his
usual adventures. Reading in detail about Harry cleaning up an
old house, for example - housekeeping is still housekeeping,
magical or no, and I'm not very interested in doing it or reading
about other people doing it.
A few other changes in this book - the "real" world comes much
more in to play rather than the fantasy universe of the previous
books, and Harry has apparently been taken off his meds. I know
that he had a lot to be grumpy in this book, especially with being
a teenager and all, but the sudden change in his character seemed
too drastic. He goes from being a warm-hearted, considerate
person to someone who will bite his best friend's heads off over
nothing. It just seemed like it didn't fit with his character, like he
turned into a walking cliché of the "angry teen" overnight.
Summary
The "real" story seemed to happen in the last 1/3 of the book,
and this part I loved. I actually liked the ending (and yes, I cried!)
as sad as it was. It packed a punch and it made me care about the
story even more. Still a really good book, with some editing it
would have been great.

It was the dawn of science and technology. Anything seemed

possible-even the creation of life itself. Victor Frankenstein
becomes obsessed with this idea and works relentlessly to prove
his theoris; but the glory he imagined becomes a living nightmare
- not only for him, but for him, but for his friends and family too.
Mary Shelley's gothic horror story-Frankenstein-was first
published in 1818 and has been the inspiration behind numerous
stage productions and films-many of which strayed a long way a

a full-colour graphic novel remains true to this classic tale,
bringing the original story to life which has never been created

This graphic novel is available in two versions: Original

Shelley's original text, while the Quick Text brings the story up
to date by presenting the text into a more simplified style so that
the tale is accessible to all readers.
The Quick Text edition wil: allow you to soaK up a general
