GEDUNG SATE

Gedung Sate is the popular name for the governor's office of West Java province. It is
one of the landmark buildings of Bandung and has become an icon for the city. It was
designed by Dutch architect J.Gerber. Work on the building was began in 1920 and it was
completed in 1922. This massive structure is still an imposing sight today. It is the
centrepiece of a large complex of government buildings set on a public square. It is one of
the most magnificent colonial buildings in all Indonesia.
Gedung Sate literally means 'Satay Building'. The name is a reference to the metal
spike on the roof which reminded Iocals of a satay skewer. For anyone interested in
architecture, it is one of the most unmissable sights in Java. It was an innovative design in
1920 for a number of reasons. It was the first building in Indonesia to use reinforced
concrete technology. Artistically, it was even more significant. It was one of the first
buildings to combine Indonesian and European styles of architecture to create the 'Indo-
Deutsch' style. It has a tiered, wooden roof, like a Javanese mosque. The main motif on the
front of the building is a stylised Javanese temple. The extensive use of dark timber for the
roofing is a conscious reference to local architectural styles. Yet the brilliant white of the
main structure with its bold arches mark it out as very much a Dutch building. Gedung Sate
is impressive in both its huge scale and also in its attention to small details. The window
niches and the wooden eaves both feature beautiful and intricate decoration. Any lover of
architecture should not miss this building.

Definition of Descriptive Text
Descriptive Text is a text which says what a person or a
thing is like. Its purpose is to describe and reveal a
particular person, place, or thing.

structures (actually not mandatory) for our writing to be
true. The arrangement is:
# Identification: (contains about the introduction of a person,
place, animal or object will be described.)
# Description: contains a description of something such as
animal, things, place or person by describing its features,
forms, colors, or anything related to what the writer
describe.
Social Function/Communicative Purpose of Descriptive text

– To describe a particular person, thing or place.

Language Feature of Descriptive Text

and unique (only one). for example: Losari beach, my house,
Borobudur temple, uncle Jim
– The use of the adjective (an adjective) to clarify the noun,
for example: a beautiful beach, a handsome man, the
famous place in Jepara, etc.

TAJ MAHAL

Taj Mahal, an epitome of love, is actually a mausoleum. Standing

majestically on the banks of River Yamuna, the Taj Mahal is synonymous to love
and romance. Taj Mahal was constructed by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in the
memory of his beloved wife and queen. The name “Taj Mahal” was derived from the
name of Shah Jahan’s wife, Mumtaz Mahal, which means crown of palaces.
Taj Mahal represents the finest architectural and artistic achievement. The
mausoleum was constructed of pure white marble. The white marble is inlaid with
semi-precious stones (including jade, crystal, lapis lazuli, amethyst and turquoise)
that form the intricate designs. Its central dome reaches a height of 240 feet (73
meters). The dome is surrounded by four smaller domes. Four slender towers, or
minarets, stand at the corners. Inside the mausoleum, an octagonal marble
chamber adorned with carvings and semi-precious stones house the false tomb of
Mumtaz Mahal. Her actual remains lie below, at garden level.
Taj Mahal shows shades of magnificent beauty at different time during the
day. At dawn when the first rays of the sun hits the dome of this epic monument, it
radiates like a heavenly pinkish palace. At daytime, when the sky is bright and clear,
the Taj looks milky white. At a moonlit night when the full moon rays fall on the
glistening white marble, the cool moon rays reflect back from the white marble and
give the Taj Mahal a tinge of blue color. It’s simply breathtaking! With such beauty,
no wonder that Taj Mahal becomes one of the the Seven Wonders of the World.
EIFFEL TOWER

Eiffel tower is one of the most famous buildings in the world.

Every day, there are hundreds of tourists visiting to enjoy all the

Gustave Eiffel and became an important monument to celebrate the
100th anniversary of the French revolution.
The French government opened the tower on March 31, 1889 and
since that time, the Eiffel Tower became an icon for the city of Paris
and France.
Eiffel is also known as La Tour Eiffel or La Dame De Fer which
means as iron lady. Known as the iron lady because this is a building
that is so graceful and beautiful. Then the building is also strong
because of the legs supported by iron.
Eiffel reaches 984 feet and when completed, it became the highest
monument passed the Washington Monument. Eiffel holded the highest
title after 1930 when the Chrysler Building built in New York.
However, the Eiffel Tower remained the highest in Paris and until
now, there are more than 200 million people have visited it since
opened.
To enjoy the Eiffel Tower, visitors can climb using the stairs or the
elevator. In addition to getting awesome scenery, they can also enjoy
the delicious dishes of Paris through romantic restaurants in the tower.
You need to know a unique fact, that the tower is considered as
an eyesore for the people of France when it freshly made. When Eiffel
was built in 1889, the tower was intended as a temporary building and
will be demolished 20 years later. However, when it was useful as
radio transmitters, it eventually still be allowed to stand.
To build it, the French government had to use 18,000 pieces of iron
and more than 2 million nails. Although it was very risky, but the
development kept to be continued.
Today, it has been regarded as one of the most beautiful
architectural works in the world. Besides its use as a tourist attraction,
the building is also a communication tool for sending signals to radio
and television.
