history of sore throat in students of Social and Political Sciences Faculty,
University of Bengkulu in 2015
Background: The high prevalence of smoking in society has many adverse
effects for the health. One of them is a sore throat that consist of pharyngitis and
tonsillitis. In addition there are no data of smoking prevalence and the prevalence
of sore throat in students, especially at the University of Bengkulu.
Methods: The study design was observational with cross sectional approach. 74
samples were taken by consecutive sampling method from students of the Social
and Political Sciences Faculty (Fisipol), University of Bengkulu (UNIB) in
December 2015. The research subjects were all students Fisipol UNIB either male
or female and agree to participate in this study. Data retrieved by using a
questionnaire that has been tested for its validity and reliability. Data of the
relationship between smoking and history of sore throat analyzed by using Chi
Square method.
Results: The prevalence of Fisipol UNIB students who smoke was 54.1% and the
prevalence of sore throat in 2015 was 62.2%.
Conclusion: There was a relationship between smoking habits and history of sore
throat of Fisipol UNIB students in 2015.
