menunjukkan perilaku jujur, disiplin, percaya diri, dan bertanggung jawab.

D. MATERI PELAJARAN

Biography
Definition of Biography
A biography is simply an account or detailed description about the life of a person. It entails
basic facts, such as childhood, education, career, relationships, family, and death. Biography is a
literary genre that portrays the experiences of all these events occurring in the life of a person,
mostly in a chronological order. Unlike a resume or profile, a biography provides a life story of a
subject, highlighting different aspects of his of her life. A person who writes biographies, is
called as a “biographer.”

Types of Biography
There are three types of biography:

Autobiography

An autobiography tells the story of a person’s own life. While that person writes his own
account, he or she may take guidance from a ghostwriter or collaborator.

Biography

A biography narrates the life story of a person, as written by another person or writer. It is further
divided into five categories:
1. Popular biography
2. Historical biography
3. Literary biography
4. Reference biography
5. Fictional biography

Memoir

This is a more focused writing than an autobiography or a biography. In a memoir, a writer


narrates the details of a particular event or situation that occurred in his or her lifetime.

Function of Biography
The function of writing biographies is to provide details regarding the life of a person or a thing
in an entertaining but informative manner. By the end of a biography, readers feel like they are
well-acquainted with the subject. Biographies are often non-fictional, but many biographers also
use novel-like format, because a story line would be more entertaining with the inclusion of
strong exposition, rising conflict, and then climax. Besides, the most inspirational life stories
could motivate and put confidence into the readers.

Pengertian

Biografi adalah kisah atau keterangan tentang kehidupan seseorang. Sebuah biografi lebih
kompleks daripada sekadar daftar riwayat hidup dan data-data pekerjaan seseorang, biografi juga
bercerita tentang perasaan yang terlibat dalam mengalami kejadian-kejadian tersebut. Dalam
biografi tersebut dijelaskan secara lengkap kehidupan seorang tokoh sejak kecil sampai tua,
bahkan sampai meninggal dunia. Semua jasa, karya, dan segala hal yang dihasilkan atau dilakukan
oleh seorang tokoh diperjelas juga. Teks biografi disusun oleh orang lain, bukan oleh diri sendiri.

Biography terdiri dari dua kata yaitu:

 Bios yang artinya Hidup


 Graphia yang artinya Tulisan.

Biography text is a detailed description or account of a person’s life and written by someone else,
it is nonfiction text.
(Teks Biografi adalah suatu teks yang menggambarkan detail dari riwayat hidup seseorang secara
nyata dan ditulis oleh orang lain.)
Penjelasan

Function of Biography

 To know a person’s story about his/her life outside of any accomplishments this person
may be known for.
Untuk mengetahui kisah seseorang tentang kehidupannya di luar pencapaian apa pun,
orang ini mungkin dikenal.
 To give much information easily and educate the readers.
Untuk memberikan banyak informasi dengan mudah dan mendidik para pembaca.

Characteristics of Biography

 Biography is not written by subject and always written in the third person.
Teks biografi tidak dibuat oleh orang yang sedang diceritakan riwayat hidupnya, tetapi
diceritakan oleh oranglain dalam sudut pandang orang ketiga.
 Based on research.
Teks tersebut dibuat berdasarkan fakta pengalaman hidup suatu tokoh berisi mengenai
kisah atau cerita suatu tokoh dalam mengarungi kehidupannya, entah itu berupa kelebihan,
masalah atau kekurangan yang ditulis oleh orang lain sehingga patut menjadi teladan.
 Describes the person’s surroundings (where, when and how the person lived).
Menceritakan secara detail tentang informasi tokoh yang diceritakan yang meliputi W/H
Question (What, Where, When, Why, How)
 Use vivid language to narrate events.
Penggunaan bahasa harus benar-benar jelas diaplikasikan dalam sebuah teks biografi.
Denagn maksud menghindari kesalahan dalam informasi yang disajikan.

Generic Structure

1. Orientation (Introduction)
It is the opening paragraph, gives the readers the background information of the person.
Biasanya berisi tentang biodata yang dinarasikan seperti nama lengkap, tempat dan tanggal
lahir. Beberapa informasi umum juga dapat disajikan pada bagian ini sebagai pengenalan
tokoh.
2. Events
In events, should be in chronological order.
Tahap ini adalah bagian kejadian atau peristiwa yang dialami oleh tokoh. Berisi penjelasan
suatu cerita baik itu berupa pemecahan masalah, proses berkarir, dan berbagai peristiwa
yang pernah dialami oleh tokoh hingga mengantarkannya pada sebuah kesuksesan.
3. Re-Orientation (Closing)
It consists of a conclusion or a comment or the writer. Tell about the achievement or the
contribution of the person.
Pada penutup, bagian ini berisi tentang pandangan penulis kepada tokoh yang dikisahkan.
Reorentasi ini bersifat pilihan yang berarti penulis bisa memberikan pandangan pribadinya
tentang tokoh yang diceritakan atau penulis tidak memberikan pandangan pribadinya
terhadap tokoh yang diceritakan adalah bukan perkara yang penting.

Grammar and Language Features

Simple Past Tense

Simple Past Tense adalah menu utama dalam membuat Teks Biografi. Sebuah bentuk sederhana
kejadian yang terjadi di masa lampau. Menggunakan bentuk kata kerja kedua (verb 2).

Contoh:

 Harry Edward Styles was born in Redditch, Worcestershire on 1 February 1994.


 He is the son of Anne Cox (née Selley) and Desmond “Des” Styles, who worked in finance.
 Many of his ancestors were farm laborers in Norfolk.
 Styles was raised in Holmes Chapel, Cheshire after his parents moved there along with his
older sister, Gemma, when he was a child.
 He attended Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School.

Temporal Sequence and Temporal Conjunction.

Sebagai penghubung antara satu kalimat dengan kalimat lain dalam urutan waktu.

 Temporal Sequence (urutan waktu)


 Temporal Conjunction (konjungsi temporal).

Contoh:

 Styles’ parents divorced when he was seven and his mother later was remarried to Robin
Twist; he died in 2017.

Focus on Specific participants

Use of Action verbs.

Menjelaskan sesuatu hal yang secara aktif dilakukan oleh tokoh dengan menggunakan beberapa
kata kerja dalam bentuk V2 atau Past Form.
Contoh:

 Styles launched his own record label, Erskine Records, in May and he signed a recording
contract with Columbia Records as a solo artist, the same label behind One Direction, in
June.
 Styles wrote the song “Someday” in collaboration with Meghan Trainor for Michael
Bublé’s album Nobody but Me, released in October.

 Short Biography (focuses only on highlights of a person’s life)


 Long Biography (about life and times of someone in a lot more detail)

Sample of Short Biography of Albert Einstein

Albert Einstein was born near the end of the 1800s in Ulf, Germany. He graduated from the
University of Zurich in Switzerland at age 26. That was also when he did his famous work in
physics. Fourteen years later he won the Nobel Prize for Physics.
For the next ten years he lived in Germany and traveled a lot to talk to other scientists. Then in
the early 1930s he had to leave Germany because of Hitler and the Nazi party. He moved to the
United States. From that time until his death he lived in Princeton, New Jersey. He died at the
age of 74.

The life of Nelson Mandela


Based on the Macmillan Reader biography of Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela was born in 1918 in the village of Mvezo in South Africa. His father, Gadla Henry
Mphakanyiswa, was an important man. He worked for the king and was the chief of the village.
Nelson’s mother was called Nosekeni Fanny.
Nelson Mandela’s father Gadla was a proud and fair man. He always tried to do the right thing for
his people. Because of this, he argued with somebody and lost his money and his important job in the
village. After this the family moved to Qunu, another small village. Nelson Mandela had a very happy
childhood. He went to the local school and was a good student. But when he was ten years old his
father died, and his cousin King Jongintaba told Nelson to come and live with him. Nelson had to say
goodbye to his family.
When Nelson was nineteen he went to Healdtown College in Fort Beaufort. He moved to Fort Hare
College and then went to live in Johannesburg, where he worked as a policeman. But Nelson wanted
to become a lawyer. So he went to law school and later set up the first black law firm in South Africa.
He married a woman called Evelyn, and they had four children.
At this time in South Africa life was very difficult for black people. There was a system called
‘apartheid’. Many black people could not vote, and they could not travel around their country. They
could only go from their home to work. They had to live in ‘townships’ with other black people. The
land here was not good. They had no running water, no telephones and no electricity. Mandela spent
a lot of time talking with his friends about life in South Africa. They hoped all people in South Africa
would one day be free and equal.
Nelson Mandela first became interested in politics when he was at Fort Hare College, and in 1944 he
joined the African National Congress (ANC). Life for black people in South Africa was getting worse
all the time. Apartheid laws were getting more severe. The ANC tried to help black people. Mandela
became well known because he organized a Defiance Campaign with the ANC. He told black people
not to obey the laws of apartheid. Thousands of people took part in the Defiance Campaign. The
government did not change its apartheid laws, but the ANC grew stronger. People around the world
started to hear about it. After the Defiance Campaign, Mandela was put in prison for a while. But he
went on fighting for freedom for black people.
In 1957 Mandela and his wife Evelyn were divorced, and in 1958 Mandela married Winnie Madikizela.
They lived in the black township of Soweto and had two daughters. But in 1960 the ANC was banned,
and in 1963 Mandela was put in prison for life. He was sent away to an island where he could not see
his family.
During the 1970s and 1980s there were many riots and protests in South Africa. Many young black
people wanted to fight apartheid. The government tried to stop these protests with force. The police
and army killed thousands of people. But people in other countries were also speaking out against
apartheid. The United States and European countries passed sanctions against South Africa (‘sanctions’
are laws that punish a country). During this time a campaign to free Nelson Mandela also started
up. Around the world there were protests. People marched in the streets shouting ‘Free Mandela!’.
The South African government saw that Mandela was the only man who could change things in
the country. Mandela had talks with South Africa’s new leader, President de Klerk. In February 1990
President de Klerk freed Mandela after 27 years in prison. De Klerk promised to free 374 political
prisoners. He said that the ANC and other banned organizations would be legal again. And he said
that the government would work on a plan to let all South Africans vote.
In 1991 Mandela became president of the ANC, and in May 1994 he was elected President of South
Africa. Apartheid finally came to an end. In 1996 a new constitution was signed, giving freedom of
speech for all.
Mandela worked very hard for peace in South Africa. In 1990 he travelled around 14 countries,
meeting lots of interesting people including President George Bush Senior and Margaret Thatcher. In
December 1993, together with de Klerk, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
Nelson Mandela is now 90 years old. He retired from public life in 2004. He lives a much quieter life
these days, although he still does a lot of charitable work. He lives in Qunu, the village where he grew
up, with his third wife Graca Machel (he and Winnie Mandela separated in 1992).
I admire Nelson Mandela very much because he worked so hard for his people and chose to use
peaceful methods of protest. He fought to change South Africa into a country where people of
different races could live together and have equal rights.
