Cerita Lomba Story Telling
Cerita 1
Timun Mas
A long time ago, there was a widow named Mbok Randa. Her husband had passed
away long time ago, so that she lived there alone.
She had no children and she prayed to god to get a child. One night when she prayed,
a giant passed her house and heard her pray.
The giant said, “I can give you a child, but you should give the child back to me when
she is seventeen years old”. Mbok Randa was so happy and didn’t think the risk of
losing child later.
She agreed the offer. Then, the giant gave her the cucumber seeds and asked Mbok
Randa to plant them around her house. Tomorrow, she planted the seeds just like what
the giant asked.
Shortly, the seeds grew up after some days and there were several cucumbers there.
However, the most interesting thing was a huge golden cucumber.
Mbok Randa plucked the golden cucumber carefully and carried it home. With care,
she sliced it and she was so surprised that a cute baby girl was inside.
Then she named the baby with Timun Mas which means ‘Golden Cucumber”. She
loved the baby really much.
Year passed and Timun Mas has grown to be a beautiful and lovely little girl. She was
really smart and kind as well. That is why Mbok Randa kept thinking about her
promise to the giant.
One night, Mbok Randa had a dream. She must meet a holy man who lived in a place
called mount gundul. That holy man could help to save her daughter.
The next morning, Mbok Randa went to mount gundul. She met the holy man and he
gave 4 little bags to Mbok Randa.
“these bags are for her. Tell her to open and use it one by one”, said the holy man.
Mbok Randa nod her head as a sign that she understood the command. Then she came
back to home.
Each one was containing cucumber seeds, needles, salt, and shrimp paste. The holy
man said that Timun Mas could use them to protect herself.
At home, Mbok Randa then said about her promise with the giant to her daughter and
about the bag given by the holy man.
A few days later, the giant came to Mbok Randa house and asked for the promise.
Mbok Randa told her daughter to run from the back door and took the bags from a
holy man with her.
The giant was so angry and rushed toward Timun Mas. He was getting closer and
closer. She then opened the first bag. It was the cucumber seeds.
She threw those seeds and instantly they grew into the huge cucumber fields. The
giant ate them all, so that she could run further.
However, it was giving the giant more strength to chase the girl. He was getting close
again. After that, she opened the second bag that contains the needles and spilled them
behind her.
The needles magically turned into the lush bamboo trees which were thorny. The
giant bony’s were bled and scrathed. Unfortunately, he made it and chased her again.
Timun Mas opened the third bag and spilled the salt inside. That made the soil which
the salt touched turned into the very deep sea.
The giant almost drown there, but he swam to cross it. From a far place, Timun Mas
saw it. She then opened the last bag and threw it. It was the shrimp paste and made the
soil became the large swamp of boiling mud.
Finally, the giant was trapped there and the mud drowned him. Everything was ended.
Timun Mas came back to her home and live happily ever after with Mbok Randa.
Cerita 2
Kebo Iwa
Once upon a time, in a Balinese village, there lived a giant named Kebo Iwa. Being a
giant, he had massive strength and also a massive appetite. The people in the village
often asked Kebo Iwa’s help to build houses and repair temples.
Kebo Iwa never asked for any money in return; he just wanted the villagers to prepare
food. A lot of food, equivalent to the portion of 100 adults. The villagers had a hard
time preparing that much food, even if Kebo Iwa did nothing that particular day. If the
villagers failed to provide food, Kebo Iwa would become angry and destroy houses
and temples.
The food supply in the village gradually declined and people started to go hungry,
except for Kebo Iwa.
One day, the village was struck by a long draught. The rice fields were dry and filled
with wilting rice plants. As the food in the village storage dwindled, the villagers
started to fear Kebo Iwa’s wrath. He had to be fed constantly, but there was no harvest
this year!
Their fears were realized. Kebo Iwa appeared before them one day, demanding for
food. Seeing that the villagers could not provide food to satiate his bottomless maw,
he began to rampage through the village. He destroyed houses and temples and ate
cattle.
Everyone fled for safety, terrified of Kebo Iwa’s power. But, as they saw their sacred
temples being reduced to rubble by Kebo Iwa’s might, the villagers’ fear evolved into
vengeance.
“How dare he destroy our gods’ dwelling!” said the village chief. So, the villagers
cooked up a plot to get rid of Kebo Iwa.
After the rampage, Kebo Iwa was tired. The villagers approached him, with loads of
food they managed to scrounge up. Kebo Iwa gobbled up all the food and made a deal
with the villagers. He would help them rebuild, and they will provide food for him
from thereon. Lulled by the promise of eternal food, Kebo Iwa gladly accepted the
offer.
Kebo Iwa kept his word. He helped the villagers rebuild the temples and houses.
Owing to his strength, half of the village was rebuilt in a matter of days. While he was
working, the villagers were secretly gathering limestone. A lot of limestone.
“After you rebuild our village, we’re going to build you a big, luxurious house!” said
the village chief. Kebo Iwa was delighted. He worked harder.
After the village was fully rebuilt, Kebo Iwa’s final task was to dig a well so the
villagers could have enough water. He dug and dug and dug. A mountain of earth
began to form. The villagers kept providing food for him as he continued digging.
One day, Kebo Iwa fell asleep in the hole. He ate too much and was exhausted. Upon
hearing his snores, the villagers knew it was their time. They started dumping the
limestone into the well. Kebo Iwa was fast asleep. He woke up when he realized he
was suffocating on water mixed with limestone. He jolted awake, struggling to keep
above of the rising water. But, despite his strength, he could not escape the sticky
mixture of limestone and water. He could only scream and writhe, until he met his
demise, buried under water and limestone. The villagers cheered, they were finally
free from their oppressor!
The well that Kebo Iwa dug is now known as Lake Batur, while the massive heap of
earth standing beside it became known as Mount Batur. And that’s how Lake Batur
came to be, according to Balinese folklore.
Cerita 3
Bawang Merah and Bawang Putih
In a small village, there lived a wealthy merchant and his beautiful wife. They
had a daughter named Bawang Putih (garlic). For a time, they led blissful lives.
However, one day the wife fell ill and died soon after. Bawang Putih was
grieved by her mother’s death. Unable to see his daughter suffering, he married
again. His second wife was also a beautiful woman, a widow with one child
named Bawang Merah (shallot). The merchant was glad to have Baw ang Merah
for Bawang Putih’s playmate.
Unfortunately, a few years later, the merchant also fell ill and died. Bawang
Putih was left with her stepmother and stepsister. Soon, t he stepmother and
stepsister’s real characters showed up. The stepmother was a ha rsh, demanding
woman, who only spoiled her own daughter. Bawang Merah was a vain,
flirtatious girl, who only thought of lovely dresses and make -ups. They insisted
that Bawang Putih do all the work.
At first, Bawang Putih was dejected, but then she maintained a cheerful and
hopeful attitude. She believed that one day everything would change for her if
she kept being kind. She grew into a bright, beautiful girl, even prettier tha n
Bawang Merah. Her stepmother and stepsister envied her greatly. They made
her suffer even more, giving her a lot of chores to do from dawn to dusk.
Bawang Putih’s only refuge was the forest near the river. When she washed the
clothes in the river, it was the time she was free from their torment.
One day, while she was washing clothes, the strong currents of the river drifted
a red scarf that belonged to Bawang Merah. Afraid that Bawang Merah would
scold her, she ran along the river with a stick to retriev e the scarf. However, the
water flowed too fast. The red scarf was out of her sight.
The river ended in a cave. Bawang Putih went inside and found an old woman
there.
“Hello there, young girl. Who are you and what are you doing here?” the old
woman greeted her.
“I’m Bawang Putih, madam. I’m looking for my sister’s red scarf. It was
drifted by the river. Have you seen it?” said Bawang Putih.
“Yes, I have. I’m going to give it to you, but you must help me do some chores
first,” said the old woman.
“Most willingly, madam,” answered Bawang Putih.
Bawang Putih helped the old woman cleaned the cave and cooked some food.
The old woman was satisfied by Bawang Putih’s work.
“Thank you, Bawang Putih. Here’s your sister’s scarf. Also, because you’ve
helped me, I will give you a present,” said the old woman. She presented two
boxes, one large and the other small.
“Ah, no need, madam,” said Bawang Putih. “You’ve helped me as well, so you
don’t have to give me a present.”
“But I insist, child,” said the old woman.
Bawang Putih was not greedy, so she chose the small box. After thanking the
old woman, she went home. Bawang Merah and her mother scolded her because
she was late.
“Where have you been? We were waiting for you. Cook for us, we’re hungry!”
said the stepmother.
“I was chasing your scarf, Bawang Merah. It was drifted by the river,” replied
Bawang Putih.
When Bawang Putih opened it, they discovered lots of jewels and gold coins
inside. Bawang Putih told them how she got the box. They scolded her again
because she did not take the large box.
“I will take the large box and become richer than you,” laughed Bawang
Merah.
The next day, Bawang Merah purposefully drifted her red scarf and went to the
old woman’s cave. The old woman asked her to help cleaning the cave, but
Bawang Merah refused. Instead, she poked around the cave and found the large
box.
“I’ll take this, old woman!” cried Bawang Merah, running with the box.
When she went home, she and her mother opened the large box. How surprised
they were! It was full of scorpions, worms, and snakes. Bitten by the snakes
and scorpions, they cried in pain. The good-hearted Bawang Putih helped them.
“But this house will belong to me, and the jewelry, and you will never order me
to do housework again,” said Bawang Putih.
Bawang Merah and her mother realized their mistakes. They promised never to
torment Bawang Putih any more. With her treasure, Bawang Putih became a
rich young woman. Because she was clever and hardworking, she lived
prosperously ever after.
