Dalam teori Out of Afrika menganggap
bahwa homo erectus tertentu di Afrika
adalah nenek moyang manusia modern.
Kemudian berevolusi di suatu daerah di
Afrika dan selanjutnya para keturunannya
bergerak cepat ke seluruh pelosok dunia.
Di Afrika lah jalur Homo Sapies dilahirkan dan
sejak saat itu mereka keluar Afrika dalam
berbagai gelombang migrasi. Mereka mendiami
tempat-tempat di berbagai belahan dunia yang
belum terjangkau sebelumnya. Bentuk-bentuk
Homo Sapies awal di luar Afrika hanya dianggap
sebagai spesies terpisah yang kemudian punah.
Dasar teori asal usul nenek moyang bangsa
Indonesia ini berdasarkan ilmu genetika melalui
penelitian DNA mitokondria gen perempuan dan
laki-laki.
Menurut ahli dari Amerika Serikat, Max Ingman,
manusia modern yang ada sekarang ini berasal dari
Afrika, antara kurun waktu 100-200 ribu tahun lalu.
Mereka keluar dari Afrika karena bencana
kelaparan yang timbul akibat dari letusan
supervolcano sekitar 70.000 tahun yang
lalu yang menyebabkan matinya banyak
tumbuhan yang menjadi sumber makanan
mereka.
Rute 'Out of
Africa'
Pada 70.000 tahun yang lalu bumi memasuki
zaman glasial terakhir dan permukaan air laut
menjadi lebih dangkal karena air masih berbentuk
gletser. Dengan keadaan seperti ini mereka sangat
memungkinkan menyeberangi lautan hanya
dengan menggunakan perahu primitif.
Tempat tujuannya adalah menuju Asia Barat. Jalur
yang mereka tempuh ada dua, yaitu mengarah ke
Lembah Sungai Nil, melintasi Semenanjung Sinai
lalu ke utara melewati Arab Levant dan yang kedua
melewati Laut Merah.
Setelah memasuki Asia, beberapa kelompok
tinggal sementara di Timur Tengah, sedangkan
kelompok lainnya melanjutkan perjalanan dengan
menyusuri pantai Semenanjung Arab menuju ke
India, Asia Timur, Indonesia, dan bahkan sampai
ke Barat Daya Australia, yaitu dengan
ditemukannya fosil laki-laki di Lake Mungo.
