Pendidikan (education) secara semantik berasal
dari bahasa yunani paidagogia yang berarti
pergaulan dengan anak-anak. Dalam arti sempit, pendidikan merupakan
seluruh kegiatan yang direncanakan serta
dilaksanakan secara teratur dan terarah di
lembaga pendidikan sekolah..

Dari sudut pandang yang luas, pendidikan adalah segala jenis

pengalaman kehidupan yang mendorong timbulnya minat
belajar untuk memengaruhi dan kemudian bisa mengerjakan
sesuatu hal yang telah diketahui..

Pendidikan di
Dunia
Pendidikan dunia telah lama sekali adanya. Mulai dari zaman
kuno dan zaman yunani kuno, kemudian zaman hellenisme Francis Bacon
tahun 150-500 SM, ke zaman pertengahan 500-1500-an,
zaman reformasi dan kontra reformasi pada tahun 1600- an.

Pendidikan mulai menunjukkan perbedaan eksistensinya

dengan pendidikan-pendidikan sebelumnya adalah sejak
zaman realisme. Pendidikan-pendidikan sebelumnya
masih banyak berkiblat pada dunia ide, sementara pada
zaman realisme pendidikan diarahkan pada kehidupan
dunia dan bersumber dari keadaan di dunia pula.
Menurut Bacon dan pengikutnya, ada sejumlah prinsip
pendidikan yang dikembangkan pada waktu itu, yakni
sebagai berikut.
 Menurut Francis ○ Pelajaran harus diberikan satu per satu.

Sejarah Pendidikan
di Indoneisa Tokoh pendidik nasional yang akan dibahas
adalah Ki Hajar Dewantara yang mendirikan
Taman Siswa di Yogyakarta.
Pendidikan di Indonesia telah ada sejak tahun 1901, zaman
Belanda menduduki Indonesia. Saat itu, Belanda
mendirikan sekolah-sekolah di Indonesia untuk kalangan
pribumi. Tujuannya adalah sebagai bentuk upaya dari
kebijakan Politik Etis yang mereka terapkan. Namun,
seiring berjalannya waktu, sistem pendidikan di Indonesia
sudah mulai berkembang, terlepas dari campur tangan
Belanda.

Asas pendidikan Taman Siswa dirumuskan pada tahun

1922, yang sebagian besar merupakan asas perjuangan
untuk menentang penjajah Belanda pada waktu itu.
 Ki Hajar Asas-asas itu adalah sebagai berikut :

Dewantara o Kemerdekaan individu untuk mengatur diri sendiri

o Kemerdekaan dalam berpikir, mengembangkan perasaan,
dan kemauan melaksanakan sesuatu.
o Kebudayaan sendiri, sebagai dasar kehidupan bukan
intelektual
o Kerakyatan, yaitu pendidikan harus diberikan kepada
seluruh rakyat.
o Hidup mandiri adalah berusaha menghidupi diri sendiri
dan tidak menerima bantuan yang mengikat.
o Hidup sederhana agar mampu membiayai diri sendiri.
o Mengabdi kepada anak, semua kegiatan yang dilakukan
adalah untuk kepentingan perkembangan anak-anak.
Masa Perjuangan
Bangsa
Pendidikan pada zaman penjajahan Belanda dapat dikatakan tidak menguntungkan bangsa
Indonesia karena pada waktu itu terjadi dualisme dalam pendidikan, yaitu sebagai berikut:

1. Sistem pendidikan untuk anak-anak orang
Belanda dan orang-orang Eropa lainnya
dilaksanakan secara lengkap, yakni mulai dari SD
hingga SMA dan lulusannya dapat hak untuk
meneruskan pendidikan ke Eropa.
2. Sistem pendidikan untuk anak-anak orang Indonesia,
sebagian besar hanya sampai SD 3 tahun (kelas 3 SD)
dan beberapa ada yang sampai SD 5 tahun (kelas 5 SD)
dan lulusannya dimanfaatkan untuk menjadi pegawai-
pegawai pemerintahan jajahan yang dibayar murah.
