For you and for us, a festival must be more than just an anthology. Festival Salihara,
now the third, can be seen as the crème de la crème of our curators’ choices. We call
it thus for two reasons. First, the curators have put together the best ones possible
from the respective fields and contexts, more so than when they’re just compiling
our monthly programs. Secondly, in the blending between one and the other, the
cornucopia of presentations and performances displays a certain je ne sais quoi
underlining our vision to preserve diversity and experimentation.
Nevertheless, this being the summit isn’t just a measure of ourselves. We always
strive to grow together with you, our audience. Komunitas Salihara has grown into
2 FE STI VA L SA L I HA RA K ETIGA
what it is today because of your kind willingness to support us, to sustain and enliven
our variety of programs. Festival Salihara is also a way for us to thank all of you. For
a whole month, between September 23 and October 20, we will be presenting no less
than twelve troupes from Indonesia and abroad. You’re not only spoilt for choice, but
also invited to discern; and, of course, to enjoy them at leisure.
This opportunity does not arrive twice. So best not to miss it. In the following pages,
you will read the why-and-wherefores of the performers in our Festival. Chunky Move
dance company and the pianist Margaret Leng Tan, for instance, are names with
sterling reputations in the world arts scene. There are also performers such as duo-
guitarists Twin Demon and Tresno Budoyo dance troupe, who are relatively “new” to
us, but whose unique works are more than deserving to receive a wider reception.
Meanwhile, there are Teater Garasi and choreographer Fitri Setyaningsih, who are
very well-known for their cutting edged works. We will also see choreographer Wiwiek
Sipala and komungo player-cum-composer Jin Hi Kim who are always stepping into the
future with their respective traditions.
We invite Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim to give a lecture on “freedom and its enemies”;
we believe that he, due to his experiences, can provide a critical reflection upon this
theme, something that is deeply entwined in our vision. To make an event with a
difference, we produce Tan Malaka, an operatic work by poet Goenawan Mohamad
and composer Tony Prabowo—a montage based on the life and thoughts of the
controversial intellectual-freedom fighter. In the meantime, site-specific installation
works by Hedi Hariyanto and Joko Dwi Avianto will alter the face of Salihara complex
throughout the Festival.
And thus, we would reach the summit with a veritable combination of all
performance pieces. A number of communities will also add to the nuances of this
Festival by organizing weekly workshops and lectures. Clearly, such a network of
communities will not only enrich the Festival, but, more importantly, expand the
sphere of the discerned public in our city. Finally, our Festival is made possible by
the support from various parties—our sponsors, donors, media-partners, Friends of
Salihara, and last but not least, the performers. To all of them, we are deeply grateful.
Festival Salihara, which heretofore will be hosted as a biennale, is a means which
enable us to make our urban life more colorful, tolerant and open. Let us celebrate
imagination and creativity—the source by which we could move forward faster. And you,
dear audience, are our companions in sustaining the arts suitable to our age and our
environment. Welcome to the third Festival Salihara, and we hope you will enjoy the
experience.

BONITA & the hus BAND (BNTHB) is a band with four members: Bonita (vocals,
tambourine), Petrus Briyanto Adi alias Adoy (guitar, vocals), Bharata Eli Gulo
(percussion, vocals), and Jimmy Tobing (saxophone). Every time they perform their
music includes acoustic, soul, folk, and R&B. The lyrics of their songs come from their
experiences in daily life. The song, God Came to Me for example, which is dominated by
the plucking of acoustic guitar punctuated by the heavy vocals of Adoy, tells the story
of how God came to humans bringing love. This event that resembles the Prophet
receiving the revelation moves between realism and surrealism.
As a vocalist, Bonita has actually worked with a number of musicians, and even
produced two solo albums, Bonita (2003) and …laju (2009). BNTHB was formed in 2006.
In the initial formation, Rizal Bayu Prasadha (bass guitar, vocal) was part of the group
before he left and Jimmy Tobing joined in May 2009. With their current formation,
BNTHB appears more unified. The ability and experience of each performer plays a
part in enriching the character of the group. Bonita has the ability to sing soulfully and
very expressively, while Adoy has a tight and percusive rhythm guitar style, Bharata with
a solid and singing style of playing percussion, and Jimmy with his electric style make
this acoustic quartet appear “total, strong, vibrant, and enjoyable.”
BNTHB get interesting responses every time they perform. They achieved success in
their first international performance at On the Waterfront Series—Indie Asia in April of
2009 at the Outdoor Theater, The Esplanade Singapore, with their album, BONITA & the
hus BAND (volume 1). A year later, last March, Bonita and friends again appeared at The
Esplanade, Singapore, in the international music festival Mosaic Music Festival 2010.

Digital Buddha is a multimedia performance, presenting Jin Hi Kim’s komungo/electric
komungo solo recital (a komungo is a Korean 4th-century fretted board zither), and
supported by percussionist Gerry Hemingway, as well as digital video work by Benton-C
Bainbridge and Joel Chadman.
Kim created an interactive stage between her electric komungo and MIDI computer
system. Utilizing MAX/MSP technology, the sounds emanating from the komungo is
processed by a computer program triggered through a MIDI foot pedal. Thus, this solo
performance presents a close-knitted relationship between the eternal tenets of Buddhist
meditations with space-age radar system—a music project that she has been working on
for the past 25 years.
A 70-minute presentation, Digital Buddha was first performed in Korea Festival in 2007.
Subsequently, she has appeared on some of the world’s foremost stages, such as World
on Stage Festival, Roulette in New York, Expo Zaragosa, and Museo do mar de Galicia,
Festival Abrazos de Compostela in Spain.
Kim received the Guggenheim Fellowship 2010 award for Music Composition. She is
currently involved in Music Alive Composer in Residence with New Haven Symphony
Orchestra for the 2009-2011 seasons. She has also participated in the Composer to
Composer residency program with famous international composers such as John Cage.
In South Korea, she is recognized for her contribution as a cultural ambassador, and her
innovative work with the electric komungo. Her book Komungo Tango is published in South
Korea.
Gerry Hemingway is one of America’s foremost percussionist for the past two decades.
He has appeared on stage with Anthony Davis, Leo Smith, George Lewis and Anthony
Braxton. In the late 70s, together with trombonist Ray Anderson and bassist Mark Helias,
he created the trio Bass Drum Bone. He was also part of the Anthony Braxton Quartet for
11 years (1983-1994).

This contemporary quintet consists of Christa Powell (violin), Bernard Hoey (viola),
Kylie Davidson (piano), Robert Davidson (bass), and John Babbage (saxophone). In
their work they try to open up new areas in music. They collaborate with artists from
various fields, starting from comedy, pop, jazz, world music, chamber music, film, to
experimental art. Their music grapples with diverse themes and layers of ideas, including
politics, philosophy, and issues in modern life, and their pieces are all created without
losing a sense of humor and the musicians’ expertise.
Since it was formed in 1997, Topology has gained a devoted public following and
regularly appears in riveting performances in Brisbane and other parts of Australia. In
2003, they completed their first international tour, with a successful concert in Canada.
After that, Topology also worked with many other international composers, including Tim
Brady (Canada), Andrew Poppy, Michael Nyman, Jeremy Peyton Jones (England), William
Duckworth, Terry Riley, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Carl Stone, Paul Dresher (United
States), besides composers from Australia.
Recently when they were artists-in-residence at Brisbane Powerhouse, Topology
appeared with Kate Miller-Heidke, The Kransky Sisters, the percussion duo Karak and
TaikOz. Topology has also performed in a number of festivals, including the Olympics Arts
Festival, and the Sydney Spring Festival (where they were named Best Ensemble).
Topology has produced seven albums, among them Topology, Scat, and Big Decisions.
Last July 11, in collaboration with Misinterprotato, this jazz quintet launched an album
titled Healthy.
In Festival Salihara 2010 Topology will present two different programs. Lucid Dreaming,
in day one, that mixes international composers works with Topology’s own music;
and Corridors of Power in the second day, that focuses on recorded speech and video
accompanied by music that emphasises the musical quality of the speech.

Freedom and Its Enemies
DATO’ SERI ANWAR IBRAHIM (KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA)
42 F E STI VA L SA L I HA RA K ETIGA
Pusat Data dan Analisa Tempo
This theme comes not only from the personal experiences of Anwar Ibrahim as a
politician who experienced continual threats, especially from his political rivals, but
also questions the essence of freedom in a general sense. That in a democratic world,
individual freedom is the main prerequisite that must be fulfilled before proceeding to a
democratic state. An individual must be guaranteed to be able to implement their rights,
for example the freedom to hold an opinion and have a religion, without any obstacles
from the government or other individuals—but at the same time he or she is not allowed
to threaten the freedom of other people. Threats to individual freedom are also threats
to democracy.
However, democracy is a problem in itself within Malay society which is identical with
Islam. Democracy is branded as a product of Western culture, anti-Islam, while Malay
culture and Islam have their own mechanisms for managing the relationships between
people and the state. In this context, Anwar Ibrahim will examine what kind of forces
can be identified as enemies of freedom and threats to democracy, whether religious
conservatism, manipulation of the courts, muzzling of the press, and many others.
Anwar Ibrahim is the opposition leader in Malaysia. He was born on August 10, 1947 in
Cherok Tok Kun, Penang, Malaysia. The highest position he achieved in his political career
was as Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia (1993-1998), and at one time he was mentioned
as the strong candidate to replace Mahathir Mohamad. But he then became a tough
critic of the Mahathir regime. He then returned to Parliament as the leader of Malaysia’s
opposition after winning a landslide victory in Permatang Pauh in the 2008 Election. He
is Advisor for Partai Keadilan Rakyat led by his wife, Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
The lecture will be in bahasa Indonesia.

The Third Body. On Embracing the In-Between
TEATER GARASI (YOGYAKARTA, INDONESIA)
Rtsq`c`q`.Chqdbsnq9Xtch@gl`cS`itchm
44 F ESTI VA L SA L I HA RA K ETI GA
This performance is a kind of theatrical essay on the art form of Tarling-Dangdut
and Indramayu. As an art form which has developed in the north coast region of Java,
Tarling-Dangdut has many interesting aspects to it, especially when related to the
history of Indonesian culture as a cultural history of the “in between.” It moves between
agrarian and industrial cultures, between rural and urban, between traditional and
modern. It is composed of the meeting and mixing of different cultures. Its body is
constructed from layers.
Tarling-Dangdut is also problematic. It is considered to be neither traditional art nor
an art which is modern. There are people who like it as part of social rituals or as an
art form, but there are those who reject and criticize it for various reasons. But in the
midst of its problematic position it continues to grow as an icon of the city and area of
Indramayu.
Meanwhile as a city Indramayu has grown among cultural centers which have also
influenced it: Central Java (Solo and Yogyakarta), West Java (Bandung) and Jakarta, the
center of modern Indonesia. It can be read as a village and at the same time as a city
growing in the “third space”. That is as a cultural entity which has not developed from
only one definition or identity, but a combination of diverse ones. Because of that, it can
only be understood through various approaches and perspectives.
For this performance Teater Garasi undertook a research and creative preparation by
working directly in Indramayu. Previously, Teater Garasi performed j(ej)alan (2008) and
a number of monologue projects for various actors/actresses.

TONY PRABOWO & GOENAWAN MOHAMAD
(JAKARTA, INDONESIA)
The opera Tan Malaka is the latest of numerous collaborations between composer
Tony Prabowo and librettist Goenawan Mohamad. Preparations for the opera began a
year ago. As a marriage between music and literature it demonstrates its own special
qualities. It can be called an “opera-essay,” as what is performed is not a story, but
rather a discourse about one of the most important revolutionary figures in Indonesia:
Tan Malaka. There is no actor who plays one figure. There is no dialogue between the
characters. But there are two aria singers and two text readers who sometimes cross
each other, and are sometimes parallel.
From this aspect, Tan Malaka can be called “minimalist”—although it takes place on
a stage designed in the Russian Constructivist style—suited to what the performance
wants to present. This opera-essay is a confirmation of one important aspect in the
history of Tan Malaka: his absence. Instead of appearing like Soekarno-Hatta, for
example, he spent more time moving underground, did not attend the preparations
for the Proclamation of Independence on August 17. It is unknown who killed him, and
where his real grave can be found. It is all still a mystery.
From the musical aspect, this opera is also different from the previous works of Tony
Prabowo, such as Kali and The King’s Witch. The form of the composition still follows
the prevailing form, in that there is a theme that is developed. The way the music has
been created is still conventional, especially as it still plays with melody and harmony.
It is divided into five major forms: a section with a rhythmic motif, in the form of a
canon and free counterpoint; a section in a harmonic form; a section with an aria in the
klangfarben style, with more complex rhythms; a quintet section made more complex,
as each one has their own part, in a polyrhythmic style and freer counterpoint.
The opera Tan Malaka will be accompanied by pre-performance programs consisting
of a discussion on “the future of Tan Malaka” with speaker Bonnie Triyana, and
appreciation of the opera with Suka Hardjana and Goenawan Mohamad.
