A. Defenition and the purpose of recount text

Recount text is a text that telling the reader about one story, action or activity. Its purpose is to
entertain or informing the reader. Or a text which retells event or experiences in the past.

(Recount text adalah jenis text dalam Bahasa Inggris yang menceritakan tentang suatu cerita,
tindakan, atau kegiatan. Biasanya, recount text menceritakan tentang pengalaman seseorang. Tujuan
dari recount text adalah untuk menghibur pembaca, sehingga tidak terdapat konflik dalam text ini.
Selain itu, teks ini juga bertujuan untuk memberikan informasi pada pembaca.)

B. Kind of recont text

According to Department for Education and Child Development of South Australia 2012:1 stated that
there are five types of recount text, those are:

1. Personal recount: retelling an activity that the writer has been personally involved in and may be
used to build the relationship between the writer and the reader e.g. anecdote, diary journal, personal
letter.
(Personal recount : menceritakan kembali aktivitas yang dialami penulis dan digunakan untuk
membangun hubungan/keterkaitan antara penulis dengan pembaca contohnya anekdot,buku harian
dan surat pribadi)

2. Factual recount: reporting the particulars of an incident by reconstructing factual information e.g.
police reconstruction of an accident, historical recount, biographical and autobiographical recounts.
(Factual recount : melaporkan kembali sebuah kejadian.peristiwa berdasarkan informasi yang tepat.
Conthnya reka ulang insiden oleh polisi, biografi dan auto biografi recount)

3. Imaginative recount: applying factual knowledge to an imaginary role in order to interpret and
recount events e.g. A Day in the Life of a Roman Slave, How I Discovered Radium.

4. Procedural recount: recording the steps in an investigation or experiment and thereby providing the
basis for reported results or findings.

5. Literary recount: to retell a series of events for the purpose of entertaining

C. Generic Structure of Recount

1. Orientation: Introducing the participants, place and time (memperkenalkan tokoh, waktu dan
tempat)
2. Events: Describing series of event that happened in the past (mengambarkan rangkaian kejadian
yang terjadi pada masa lalu)
3. Reorientation: It is optional. Stating personal comment of the writer to the story (Merupakan
penutup atau kesimpulan cerita. Untuk menutup suatu cerita, kita bisa memberikan opini kita
mengenai cerita tersebut)

D. Language Features

• Introducing personal participant; I, my group, etc

• Using chronological connection; then, first, etc
• Using linking verb; was, were, saw, heard, etc
• Using action verb; look, go, change, etc
• Using simple past tense

E. Example of biographies recount

Joko Widodo

Orientation Ir. H. Joko Widodo is the current President of Indonesia. He was born on June 21,
1961 in Surakarta. He is well-known with his nickname ‘Jokowi’, the acronym from
his complete name. Before he became the President of Indonesia, he was a furniture
businessman. Then, he became the Mayor of Surakarta for two periods from 2005 to
2015. But, before he finished his time as Mayor, he became one of Jakarta’s
governor candidates Ir. Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, M.M. or Ahok in 2012. Again and
again, before the due time, he was offered by PDI-P party to be the candidate of
President of Indonesia in 2014 with Jusuf Kalla as the candidate of vice president.
Events When he was a kid, he ever had a bitter experience when his small house and also
his father’s stall Cinderejo Lor in were evicted and became a centre of travel agent.
Jokowi’s mother said that Jokowi was a quiet boy but he was also sociable. He
always avoided any fight to keep the peace around him. His parents always taught
him the meaning of sincerity and responsibility. His appearance is always simple.
Not only that, when he was a kid, he used to walk to school while all of his friends
rode bicycle. Simplicity is the way he lives.

In 2005, Jokowi decided to be the candidate of Mayor in Solo through PDI-P party.
Many people were doubtful on his competency to be a Mayor since they thought that
Jokowi was a businessman in furniture and was not a politician at that time, even
when he was announced that he won in the election. Then, people began to trust him
when he made many progressive innovation and breakthrough. By his hands, Solo
got many positive changes.

Jokowi’s journey is unpredictable and we really never know how people meet their
faith. Jokowi is one of the examples. He might never dream of being the governor of
the capital city of Indonesia, even being the President. His path is not easy, too.
There were many rumours and issues during his candidacy, but he kept calm and
strong to face anything that was going to attack him from every side
Reorientation In 2014, Jokowi was elected to be the 7th President of Indonesia with Jusuf Kalla as
the Vice President. Jokowi always tries to give his best to make Indonesia has better
future. He is always spiritful with his popular jargon ‘Kerja Nyata’.

Park Jae-sang

Gangnam Style is now famous in the wold. Do you know the man behind it? He is Park Jae-sang and
known as PSY.He was born on Desember 31 1977 at Gangnam District , Seoul, South Korea. He was
grown up among bussines family members. His father is an executive chairman of manufacturing
company and his mother is owner of several restaurants.

Park Jae-sang  got  his elementary education from Banpo and continued his study to Middle Schools
and Sehwa High School. After graduated from high school, in 1996, Park flew to United Stated to
study business administration at Boston University. He was a student there for only one semester
because he dropped out of Boston University after he attended an English-language course in
Summer. Leaving business administration field, he studied music at Berkley College of Music but
soon he dropped out of Barklee College too

Park Jae-sang  returned to South Korea without having university degree and pursued carrier as
singer. He rleases his first album Psy from the Psycho World! in 2001. Because of the inappropriate
content, he was fined by South Korean government authorities. In 2002 he had the second album Sa 2
but again he was banned. In 2006 he got his fourth album Sa Jib. At that time he won honors at Hong
Kong’s Mnet Asian Music Awards.

Park Jae-sang  got his big success in 2012 when he released his sixth album Psy 6. The song
“Gangnam Style” appeared in broadcasting and newspapers outside Asia. Gangnam Style ranked first
on YouTube and soon became the global superstar.
