Introduction

Taking simple phone message is something that is very


important in every language. At home or at work, we
might need this skill when we receive a call on the phone
and need to pass a message for others. It is, therefore,
very important for us to know some useful different
phrases we can use in telephone conversation.
A. Some phrases when making a phone call.
 Hello, can I speak to ..... (name), please?
 May I speak to ….. (name), please?
 Good morning/afternoon. This is ….. (your name). I would like
to speak to ….. (name)
 Good morning, my name is ….. (your name). I’m calling from
….. (your company). Could I speak to …. , please?
 Could you put me through to extension 123 please?
B. Phrases when receiving a call.
 Good ... (morning/afternoon, (mention your company).
Can I help you?
 Hello, (mention your company) May I help you?
 Good morning, (mention your company), what can I do for you?
 Who is speaking, please?
 May I have your name, please?
 How do you spell that?
 Could you speak up, please. It's terrible connection.

D. Phrases when holding the line.

E. Phrases when leaving a message.
