Perbedaan Penggunaan Despite, Inspite of, Although, Even Though, dan

Konjungsi “in spite of”, “despite of”, “even though”, “though”, dan “although” sama-sama
digunakan untuk menunjukan kontras antara dua buah kalimat dan artinya pun sama, yaitu
“meskipun”.
Namun, dalam hal penggunaannya ada beberapa hal yang harus diperhatikan karena konjungsi-
konjungsi ini memiliki aturan pemakaiannya sendiri. Berikut ini adalah perbedaan-perbedaan
penggunaan “in spite of”, “despite”, “although”, dan “though” dan “even though”.
1. In Spite of dan Despite dilikuti dengan noun, frasa, atau pronoun bukan kalimat.
Contoh:
In spite of rain, we have to go to school.
(Meskipun hujan, kita harus pergi ke sekolah)
He still bought that car despite very expensive.
(Dia tetap membeli mobil itu meskipun mahal)
George keeps on studying all night long in spite of getting tired.
(George tetap belajar sepanjang malam msekipun lelah)
Despite being a teacher, he still works as businessman.
(Meskipun menjadi seorang guru, dia tetap bekerja sebagai seorang pebisnis)
In spite of too far, I will visit her house.
(Meskipun sangat jauh, aku tetap akan mengunjungi rumahnya)
2. Conjunction “Despite” tidak diikuti oleh preposition “of” setelahnya.
Contoh:
Despite of dark, I can see everything inside the room. (Salah)
Despite very dark, I can see everything inside the room. (Benar)
(Meskipun gelap, aku bisa melihat segala sesuatu di dalam ruangan itu)

3. “Although”, “even though”, dan “though” diikuti dengan kalimat, minimal ada subjek dan verb.
Contoh:
Although her father is rich, he is still kind to everyone.
(Meskipun ayahnya kaya, dia tetap baik kepada semua orang)
I am going to Jakarta tomorrow even though you are not allowed me to.
(Aku akan pergi ke Jakarta esok meskipun kamu tidak mengijinkannya)
Though the sky is dark, we are still happy.
(Meskipun langit gelap, kami tetap senang)
She will never forget your mistake although she forgives you.
(Dia tidak akan pernah melupakan kesalahanmu meskipun dia memaafkanmu)
Even though I had tried so hard, I cannot beat him up in swimming competition.
(Meskipun aku telah berusaha sangat keras, aku tidak bisa mengalahkannya dalam perlombaan renang)
4. Jika conjunction “in spite of”, dan “despite” digunakan setelah frasa “in fact that” mereka bisa
diikuti dengan subjek dan verb.
Contoh:
In spite of the fact that she doesn’t come, the show will keep going on tonight.
(Meskipun faktanya dia tidak datang, pertunjukan akan tetap berlangsung malam ini)
Despite the fact that he is so vicious, he is so caring to all his family.
(Meskipun faktanya dia galak, dia sangat peduli terhadap keluarganya.)
5. Meskipun “even though” dapat digunakan seperti halnya “although”. Namun, conjunction “even
though” sedikit lebih kuat dibandingkan “although”.
Contoh:
Even though the teacher didn’t come, we still have a task to be done.
(Meskipun guru tidak datang, kami tetap memiliki tugas untuk diselesaikan)
Anne still cried even though I told her not to cry last night.
(Anne tetap menangis meskipun aku memintanya untuk tidak menangis kemarin malam)
Even though the distance that separates us is so far, I still love you so much forever.
(Meskipun jarak yang memisahkan kita sangat jauh, aku tetap mencintaimu selama-lamanya.)
I. Choose even if or even though to complete the sentences.
1. I’ll have this finished by tomorrow _________ it takes all night.
 _______ I were independently wealthy, I would still want to have a part-time job.
 I can’t believe the company didn’t issue a recall _________ they knew the product
was dangerous.
 The MBA program is extremely selective.  _________ Mark had a high score on his
GMATs and excellent references, he didn’t get accepted.
 _________ Martin has little technical experience, he created a successful mobile
application.
 We wouldn’t do business with that supplier _________ they offered us a 50%
discount. The last shipment arrived late and some of the products were damaged.
 _________ the taxes are high, many tech companies have decided to stay in the
Silicon Valley.
 _________ our market share is still high, our competitors have gained some ground.
 I’m on call this weekend. I have to be available to answer the phone _________ it
rings at 2 AM.
 _________ smoking in prohibited in the business park, many people still do it.
