Discussion

A.The meaning and function of pasiva voice present simple

Passive voice is a sentence in English where the subject of the sentence is assigned
work. Simply put, what is usually the subject in the active sentence becomes the object in
the passive sentence and vice versa. For example, (I read a book) becomes (a book is read
by me).
Meanwhile, the simple present tense is a sentence in English that contains things that are
happening at the current time setting. In addition, it can also be used to express a general
habit and fact.
Passive sentences emphasize the object and place the subject as the recipient of the
action. In the present simple passive sentence, the verb used is the past participle form.

The active voice is used when the focus of a sentence is the subject (or agent) of the main
verb. The one who does the verb (work) can be a person or an object.
Take a look at the differences between active and passive sentences below:
Active sentence: Many people study this book.
Passive sentence: This book is studied by many people.

➢ In the active sentence, the subject “many people” acts as an actor who takes an
apeople amely learning.
➢ While in passive sentences, the object “this book” is placed as the main focus and
the subject “many pelples” is only the recipient of the action.

B.Characteristics of Passive Voice Simple Present Tense

There are general characteristics and special characteristics possessed by every passive
sentence. General characteristics apply to all types of passive sentences and special
characteristics only apply to some of them. Following are these characteristics:
▪ The predicate used is always a transitive verbal.
Transitive verbs are verbs that need an object after them. For example, buying, reading,
etc. Examples that are not transitive, such as bathing, sleeping, etc.

▪ Always use to be present (is/am/are) before the verb.

After the subject, it is always followed by to be present before the verb, to indicate that the
sentence is a passive sentence.
▪ Always use V3 or past participle
After to be present, the verb used must be in the form of V3 or past participle, for example,
studied, drunk, etc.

▪ Using (by) followed by perpetrator

(By + perpetrator) This indicates that the subject is subject to work by the principal.

C.Passive Voice Simple Present TenseRu

There are general formulas and formulas that are commonly used in the formation of this
passive sentence. Here is the explanation:
1. Positive/positive sentences
Active : S + V1 (whith or without ‘S’) + O

Passive : S + is/am/are + V3 + O
2. Negative/negative sentences
Active : S + do/does not + V1 + O
Passive : S + is/am/are not + V3 + O

3. Interrogative/interrogative sentences
Active : Do/Does + S + V1 + O + ?
Passive : Is/Am/Are + S + V3 + O + ?
▪ Terms of Use of Passive Voice Simple Present

D. There are several provisions that need to be considered in the use of this passive
sentence.

Here are some of these provisions:

1) Use of to be
To be used in this passive sentence is nothing but to be present which consists of is, am,
and are.

* Is is used for subjects that are single or singular nouns, for example: she, he, it, etc.
* Am is used specifically for my subject/ I
* Are is used for subjects that are plural or plural nouns, for example: they, you, etc.
2) Use of V3
The verb used is in the form of a past participle or commonly referred to as V3. There are
two provisions in the formation of V3, namely:
❖ Regular verb
Is a verb that has a regular third form or has a certain pattern in its formation, such as
adding -ed, -d, etc. For example:

Study -> studied

Play -> played
Help -> helped
Cook -> cooked

Clean -> cleaned

Visit -> visited
Repair -> repaired
Etc

❖ Irregular verb
Verbs that have the third form are irregular or not patterned so they must be memorized
one by one. Example:
Drive -> driven
Make -> made

Read -> read

Write -> written
Put -> put
Know -> known

Eat -> eat

Etc

E.How to Change Active Sentences to Passive Simple Present Tense

Certain tricks and patterns are needed in changing sentences from what used to be active
sentences into passive sentences. Here are the tips and tricks:
▪ Place the object of the active sentence into the subject of the passive sentence
For example, I study English -→ English is studied by me .

▪ Change the verb in the active sentence to be + V3

For example, you write a book -→ A book is written by you.
▪ Change the subject pronoun in the active sentence to by + object pronoun in the
passive sentence.
For example, he drives a car -→ A car is driven by him.

▪ Examples of Passive Voice Simple Present Sentences

E.Here are some examples of active sentences and their passive forms along with their
translations:
1. Positive sentence

Active : I buy a book in the shop.

Passive : A book is bought by me in the shop.
Active : She reads my novel in the class.
Passive : My novel is read by her in the class.

Active : My sister needs many papers for working.

Passive : Many papers are needed by my sister for working.
2. Negative sentences
Active : She doesn’t know my name.
Passive : My name is not known by her.

Active : I do not love Math.

Passive : Math is not loved by me.
Active : My mother doesn’t make clothes in the kitchen.
Passive : Clothes aren’t made by my mother in the kitchen. Interrogative sentence

Active : Do you bring my phone ?

Passive : Is my phone brought by you ?
Active: Does she eat my food?
Passive: Is my food eaten by her?

Active : Do they borrow our books ?

Passive : Are our books borrowed by them ?

B. present continuous passive voice

The basic pattern or formula of the Passive Voice is Tobe + Past Participle (V3).
Now, because the tense used is the present continuous, after tobe (is, am or are) it is
followed by the auxiliary verb BEING and then followed by the preset participle (V3).
Therefore, the pattern becomes:

Tobe (is, am or are) + being + V3

IMPORTANT! Tobe used is always based on the subjec of the sentence
Subjec l. = am
Subjec you,we,they = Are

Subjec He,she, it = is
Examples of Passive Voice Present Continuous Tense Positive Forms
Active sentence : We are studying English
Passive sentence : English is being studied by us now.

The subject in the active sentence changes to the object in the passive sentence (we
becomes us).
The object in the active sentence changes to the subject in the passive sentence.
The present continuous tobe is followed by the auxiliary verb being then followed by the
past participle (V3) in the passive voice (is being studied)
Active sentence : Right now, I am cutting the papers.
Passive sentence : Right now, the papers are being cut by me.
Notice the tobe used in the active sentence is different from the tobe used in the passive
sentence. This happens because the subject of the two sentences is different. The subject
of the sentence affects the tobe used.
For example, in sentence no 2. (tobe in the active sentence is am because the subject is I
and in the passive sentence tobe is are because the subject is the papers)
Active sentence: Mira is inviting me
Passive sentence : I am being invited by Mira tonight.
Examples of Passive Voice Present Continuous Tense Negative Forms
Active sentence : Vera is not washing the dishes.

Passive sentence : The dishes are not being washed by Vera.

2.For the negative form of the present continuous passive voice, simply add NOT after TOBE
or before the auxiliary verb ‘BEING.’
Active sentence : My brother is not picking him up at the airport.
Passive sentence : He is not being picked up by my brother at the airport.

Active voice: She is not hearing me.

Passive sentence: I am not being heard by her.
Example Sentences of Passive Voice Present Continuous Tense Question Form
Active Sentence : Is Dedi parking the car here?

Passive sentence : Is the car being parked by Dedi here?

In the question sentence, the sentence pattern becomes:

Tobe (is, am or are) + subject + being + V3?

OR if the culprit is known then add by Object after V3.

Tobe (is, am or are) + subject + being + V3 + by Object?

Active sentence : Are the students wearing shoes?

Passive sentence : Are the shoes being wore by students?

Active sentence : Is Ika calling me?

Passive sentence : Am I being called by Ika?

1.conclusion
Thus a brief explanation of the passive voice in English.
Passive sentence is when the subject of the sentence has an action done by someone or
something else. The object of the active verb is the subject of the passive verb. Therefore,
verbs that cannot be followed by an object (intransitive verbs) cannot be used in the passive
form.
And passive sentences are considered more formal than active sentences. Therefore, the
passive voice is generally used in writing such as scientific writing, technical reports, and
newspaper articles and is rarely used in everyday conversation.
