Selaginella lepidophylla is a species of desert plant in the spikemoss family (Selaginellaceae). S.
lepidophylla is noted for its ability to survive almost complete desiccation; during dry weather in
its native habitat, its stems curl into a tight ball and uncurl only when exposed to moisture. The
outer stems of Selaginella lepidophylla bend into circular rings in a relatively short period of
desiccation, whereas inner stems curl slowly into spirals due to the hydro-
actuated strain gradient along their length. It is native to the Chihuahuan Desert.
Common names for this plant are resurrection plant, resurrection moss, and stone flower,
doradilla, dinosaur plant. It is called a resurrection plant because this plant can be revived with
only a little water. After Selaginella lepidophylla gets wet, it turns green.
This plant can also be used as a herbal medicine. An infusion (tea) is made by steeping a
tablespoon of dried material in hot water and the tea is used as an antimicrobial in cases of
colds and sore throat. Doradilla and stone flower are the example of Selaginella lepidophylla
used for tea.

Strategi Khusus
1. Baca kalimat pertama dan terakhir untuk mencari topik dan ide pokok bacaan.
Topik dan Ide pokok bacaan biasanya terletak di awal atau akhir paragraf.
2. Biasanya topik bacaan berbentuk frasa bukan kalimat utuh.
3. Membaca dengan menggunakan strategi Skimming dan Scanning.
4. Skimming adalah membaca cepat keseluruhan passage untuk mendapatkan
konsep yang dibicarakan dalam bacaan. Jadi membaca keseluruhan teks secara
cepat dan berusaha menangkap inti bacaan.
5. Scanning adalah membaca cepat untuk mencari kata atau kalimat khusus.
Dalam soal sering kita diminta untuk mencari kata pada baris tertentu bacaan,
scan merupakan teknik membaca yang digunakan untuk langsung mencari kata
tersebut tanpa memperhatikan isi dari bacaan. Contoh: kamu diminta mencari
kata alleged, maka kamu langsung mencari kata yang berawalan a – l – l, tanpa
membaca bacaan tersebut.
6. Untuk mencari makna suatu kata dalam teks, scan bacaan, jika kamu tidak
mengetahui arti dari kata tersebut baca dan pahami kata yang berda didepan dan
dibelakang kata yang dicari, jika masih terlalu sulit, baca kalimat yang
mengandung kata tersebut dan tebaklah kemudian cari pada pilihan ganda
makna yang kamu anggap mirip.
7. Penulis selalu mencoba untuk memberikan petunjuk klu pada bacaannya agar
dapat dipahami oleh pembaca. Biasa berupa sebuah paragraf inti bacaan
tersebut.
8. Carilah vocabulary yang jarang kamu gunakan, mengantisipasi ketidaktahuanmu
pada soal vocabulary.
9. Jangan lupa mengeliminasi jawaban yang salah pada pilihan, agar kamu tidak
membaca bagian tersebut lagi.
10. Jika kamu benar-benar tidak tahu, carilah petunjuk klu sebisa kamu, kemudian
tebaklah jawabannya. Tidak ada sistem pengurangan skor pada penilaian
TOEFL apabila jawaban salah.

Selaginella lepidophylla is a species of desert plant in the spikemoss family (Selaginellaceae). S.
lepidophylla is noted for its ability to survive almost complete desiccation; during dry weather in
its native habitat, its stems curl into a tight ball and uncurl only when exposed to moisture. The
outer stems of Selaginella lepidophylla bend into circular rings in a relatively short period of
desiccation, whereas inner stems curl slowly into spirals due to the hydro-
actuated strain gradient along their length. It is native to the Chihuahuan Desert.
Common names for this plant are resurrection plant, resurrection moss, and stone flower,
doradilla, dinosaur plant. It is called a resurrection plant because this plant can be revived with
only a little water. After Selaginella lepidophylla gets wet, it turns green.
This plant can also be used as a herbal medicine. An infusion (tea) is made by steeping a
tablespoon of dried material in hot water and the tea is used as an antimicrobial in cases of colds
