CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. Background of The Paper

Every people must have guessed. If it doesn't rain this morning, I will go to the park
today, if I have money I will buy a new car. If it were like that, of course, it cannot be
separated from everyday life, right? Then what about suppositions in English?
How to express supposition? In English, presuppositions can be expressed in
conditional sentences. However, conditional sentences are not only used to express
presuppositions. Conditional sentences themselves have several types and are used
with different conditions as well.
Setiap orang pasti pernah berandai-andai. Jika pagi hari ini tidak turun hujan, aku
akan pergi ke taman hari ini, jika aku punya uang aku akan membeli mobil baru.
Berandai-andai seperti itu tentunya tidak lepas dari kehidupan sehari-hari bukan.
Lalu bagaimana dengan pengandaian dalam bahasa Inggris?
Bagaimana cara mengungkapkan pengandaian? Di dalam bahasa Inggris,
pengandaian bisa diungkapkan dengan conditional sentence. Namun, conditional
sentence tidak hanya dipakai untuk mengungkapkan pengandaian saja. Conditional
sentence sendiri memiliki beberapa jenis dan dipakai dengan kondisi yang berbeda-
beda juga.

CHAPTER II
THEORY AND DISCUSION

A. Conditional Sentence
Conditional sentence is a compound sentence that has a condition of imagination,
supposition, and something that has never happened. This presupposition expressed
may or may not be realized.
A conditional sentence consists of an independent clause and a dependent clause
which usually starts with the word 'if' or if. A sentence consisting of these two clauses
can then be called a conditional sentence. However, there are some sentences that can
start with ‘when’.
The form of a conditional sentence is if clause + main clause. if clause is a clause that
is part of the presupposition. The main clause is a sentence that contains the
consequences of the conditional condition at the beginning of the sentence. In
addition, the conditional sentence formula can also be reversed into a main clause +
if-clause.
There are four different types of conditional sentences in English. Each expresses a
different degree of probability that a situation will occur or would have occurred
under certain circumstances. Let’s look at each of these different types of conditional
sentences in more detail.

1. Zero Conditional Sentences (Conditional Sentences Type 0)

Zero conditional sentences express general truths—situations in which one thing
always causes another. When you use a zero conditional, you’re talking about a

2
general truth rather than a specific instance of something. Zero conditional
sentences is ussualy often found in the present tense.
Formula :
If + simple present tense (If-clause), simple present tense (main-clause)
Or
Simple present tense (main-clause), if + simple present tense (if-clause)
Example:
- If you stare at the sun too long, your eyes damage.
- If we heat the water, it’s boils.
- If it’s rain, it’s wet.
- If I eat a lot, I gain weight.

Zero conditional sentences mengungkapkan kebenaran umum -situasi di mana satu

hal selalu menyebabkan yang lain. Saat Anda menggunakan kondisi nol, Anda
berbicara tentang kebenaran umum dari pada contoh spesifik dari sesuatu. Zero
conditional sentences ini biasanya sering ditemukan dalam bentuk present tense.
Rumus :
If + simple present tense (If-clause), simple present tense (main-clause)
Atau
Simple present tense (main-clause), if + simple present tense (if-clause)
Contoh :
- Jika Anda tidak menyikat gigi, Anda mendapatkan gigi berlubang.
- Jika kita memanaskan air, itu akan mendidih.
- Jika hujan, maka basah.
- Jika saya makan banyak, maka saya menambah berat badan.

2. First Conditional Sentences (Conditional Sentences Type 1)

First conditional sentences are used to express situations in which the outcome is
likely (but not guaranteed) to happen in the future. This can be happen because it’s
still realistic or reasonable for the possibility of that assumption to occur.
Therefore, first conditional sentences uses a sentences with simple future.
Formula :
If + simple present tense (if-clause), simple future tense (main-clause)
Or
Simple future tense (main-clause), if + simple present tense (if-clause)
Example:
- If you tell your mom the truth, she will forgive you.
- If it’s rains, I will not come to your house.
- If I study hard, I will pass the exam.

3
Kalimat kondisional pertama digunakan untuk mengungkapkan situasi di mana
hasilnya mungkin (tetapi tidak dijamin) terjadi di masa depan. Hal ini bisa terjadi
karna masih realistis atau masuk akal untuk kemungkinan pengandaian itu terjadi.
Maka dari itu, first conditional sentences menggunakan kalimat dengan simple
future.
Rumus :
If + simple present tense (if-clause), simple future tense (main-clause).
Atau
Simple future tense (main-clause), if + simple present tense (if-clause).
Contoh :
- Jika kamu memberitahu ibumu yang sebenarnya, dia akan memaafkanmu.
- Jika hujan, aku tidak akan datang ke rumahmu.
- Jika saya rajin belajar, saya akan lulus ujian.

3. Second Conditional Sentences (Conditional Sentences Type 2)

Second conditional sentences are useful for expressing outcomes that are
unrealistic and unlikely to happen in the future. Second conditional sentences is to
use the simple past tense in the if-clause and an auxiliary modal verb (e.g., could,
should, would, might) in the main clause (the one that expresses the unrealistic or
unlikely outcome).
Formula :
If + past tense (if-clause), past future tense (main-clause)
Or
Past future tense (main-clausa), if + past tense (if-clause)
Examples :
- If I inherited a billion dollars, I would travel to the moon.
Fact : I don’t inherite a billion dollars.
- If I won the competition, I would buy a new cellphone.
Fact : I don’t win the competition.
- If I had a lot of money, I would buy a new car.
Fact : I don’t have a lot of money.

Second conditional sentences berguna untuk mengungkapkan hasil yang tidak

realistis dan kecil kemungkinannya untuk terjadi di masa depan. Second
condisional sentences adalah dengan menggunakan simple past tense dalam
klausa-if dan kata kerja modal bantu (misalnya, could, should, would, may) di
klausa-utama (salah satu yang mengungkapkan hasil yang tidak realistis atau
tidak mungkin).
Perhatikan contoh di bawah ini:
Rumus :

4
If + past tense (if-clause), past future tense (main-clause)
Atau
Past future tense (main-clausa), if + past tense (if-clause)
Contoh :
- Jika saya mewarisi satu miliar dolar, saya akan melakukan perjalanan ke
bulan.
- Jika saya memenangkan kompetisi, saya akan membeli ponsel baru.
- Jika saya punya banyak uang, saya akan membeli mobil baru.

4. Third Conditional Sentences (Conditional Sentences Type 3)

Third conditional sentences are used to explain that present circumstances would
be different if something different had happened in the past. The third conditional
sentences use the past perfect (i.e., had + past participle) in the if-clause. The
modal auxiliary (would, could, should, etc.) + have + past participle in the main-
clause expresses the theoretical situation that could have happened.
Formula :
If + past perfect tense (if-clause), future perfect tense (main-clause).
Or
Future perfect tense (main-clause), if + past perfect tense (if-clause).
Examples:
If my grades were good, I would have gotten a better job.

Kalimat kondisional ketiga digunakan untuk menjelaskan bahwa keadaan

sekarang akan berbeda jika sesuatu yang berbeda telah terjadi di masa lalu. Third
condisional sentences menggunakan past perfect (yaitu, had + past participle) di
klausa-if. Auxiliary modal (would, could, should, dll.) + have + past participle
dalam klausa-utama mengungkapkan situasi teoretis yang bisa saja terjadi.
Rumus :
If + past perfect tense (if-clause), future perfect tense (main-clause).
Atau
Future perfect tense (main-clause), if + past perfect tense (if-clause).
Contoh :
Jika nilai-niliku bagus, aku pasti sudah mendapatkan pekerjaan yang baik.
