Modal verb atau kata kerja modal merupakan sebuah auxiliary verb, atau kata kerja bantu.
Kata kerja bantu ini harus digunakan dengan kata kerja utama. Kata kerja modal ini digunakan untuk
mengekspresikan kebutuhan, kemungkinan, kemampuan, permintaan, juga perintah. Auxiliary verb
(kata kerja bantu) berfungsi untuk membantu kata kerja lain untuk menunjukan tenses dan juga
suasana hati dari sang penutur. Bentuk dari Auxiliary verb yaitu, do, be dan have.
Contoh dari modal verb yaitu:
1. must,
2. shall,
3. should,
4. would,
5. can,
6. could,
7. may,
8. might,
9. will.
Kata kerja modal ini berbeda dengan kata kerja lainnya. Ketika menggunakan kata kerja modal,
bentuk orang ketiga tidak perlu ditambahkan imbuhan akhir -s pada present tense. Misalnya, ‘She
cans’ atau ‘He cans’, itu adalah bentuk yang salah.
Mitta: God! I think that exam was so hard! I only answered 4 questions right! How about
you?
Brian: Well, I agree with you. There are some questionsthat I cannot answer
.Mitta: I think we should discuss about the questions after this. But now I’m exhausted and
starving! Brian, let’s go grab something to eat!
Brian: Yes, I think so. What should we eat?
Mitta: Anything! I can probably eat anythingright now! What if we go the new cafe that Ruby
mentioned yesterday?
Brian: Isn’t that like 5 blocks away from here? I don’t think you are strong enough to walk
that far? You said you’re starving.
Mitta: That’s a good point.Do you have any other ideathen?
Brian: There’s a new food stall in Art Faculty’s cafeteria. I heard that the hotdog is beyond
this world. We need to try that, don’t you think?
Mitta: Hhhmm... I’m not sure about that! I don’t like hotdogs though. Do they sell anything
else?
Brian: I think they sell Hamburger, french fries, spaghetti, chicken wing. Stuffs like that.
Mitta: I love spaghetti! And chicken wing will be a great addition. Let’s go!
