I. Study the following text and then complete the table below while or after you read
the text.

A forest is a community of many living things. Trees are like apartment buildings. Some
birds and insects live high in the treetops, others lower down. Some animals live on the
forest floor., others underground among the roots. Every part of the tree is food for some
animal. Birds eat fruits and seeds. Deer feed on leaves and twigs. Squirrels eat nuts.
Porcupine eat the inner bark, some insects eat roots, some drink sap, many eat the green
leaves, and others chew tunnels under the bark. Many animals eat insects or other animals
instead of plants. Insects are eaten by birds, lizards, snakes, toads, and larger insects. They
in turn are eaten by other animals. Animals that eat plants would multiply too rapidly for the
food supply if meat eaters did not keep their numbers in check.

3. READING COMPREHENSION

Text 1
A long time ago, very few people lived in the New Territories. There were only a few
villages. If the people wanted to go from one village to another, they often had to pass
through wild and unsafe forest.
One day, a farmer’s young wife went to the next village to visit her own mother and brother.
She brought along her baby son. When it was time for her to leave, her brother said “ it is
getting dark. Let my son, Ah Tim go with you though the forest.”
So Ah Tim led the way and the young woman followed behind, carrying her baby. When
they were in the forest, suddenly they saw a group of wolves. They began to run to avoid the
danger, but Ah Tim kicked against a stone and fell down. At once the wolves caught him.
The young woman cried to the wolves, “ please eat my own son instead.” Then, she put her
baby son on the ground in front of the wolves and took her nephew away. Everyone
understood that this was because the woman was very good and kind. She had offered her
own son’s life to save her nephew.
They ran back to the house and called for help. All men in the village fetched thick sticks and
went back with her into the forest. When they got there, they saw something very strange.
Instead of eating the woman’s baby the wolves were playing with him.

TEXT 2

Last week I took my five-year old son, Willy, to a musical instrument store in my
hometown. I wanted to buy him a set of junior drum because his drum teacher advised
me to buy him one. Willy likes listening to music very much. He also likes asking me
everything he wants to know. Even his questions sometimes seem precocious for a
boy of his age. He is very inquisitive.

We went there by car. On the way, we saw a policeman standing near a traffic light
regulating the passing cars and other vehicles. He blew his whistle now and then.

Seeing the policeman blowing his whistle, Willy asked me at once, “Dad, why is the

Boarding School Education

There are many arguments in favor of a boarding school education. Nevertheless, the
boarding school is not always the best education institution for everyone.
At an early age interacting and communicating with people is very important for a
child’s personal life and can be especially helpful for his/her future. In a boarding school,
shy children can take advantage of interaction through communal activities. The
boarding school also offers a great variety of activities such as arts, sports, and music
that allow children to demonstrate and develop specialized skills in their free time.
Furthermore, the structured way of life and strict rules at the boarding school may
helps students to get used to a well ordered way of life. The manners and social skills
will help them to become more responsible and confident, and to develop their talents in
leadership. Professionally trained teachers and educators in the boarding school can offer
excellent education without the parents’ constant supervision.

In spite of these good points, it is not advisable to send a child to a boarding school if
he/she is a dependent learner. A boarding school usually demands that student learn
independently. In addition, the boarding school should not be seen as a measure to solve
inappropriate behavior or unsatisfactory study performance. Instead of improving,
problematic children may close off their relationship with their peers and teachers.
In conclusion although a boarding school may provide good education to many children,
it is not recommended for those who are strongly attached to their families. They may
become frustrated and socially isolated.

The Blonde and the Lawyer

A blonde and a lawyer are seated next to each other on a flight from LA to NY. The
lawyer asks if she would like to play a fun game. The blonde, tired, just wants to take a
nap, politely declines and rolls over to the window to catch a few winks.

The lawyer persists and explains that the game is easy and a lot of fun. He explains, “I
ask you a question, and if you don’t know the answer, you pay me $5.00, and vise
versa.” Again, she declines and tries to get some sleep. The lawyer, now agitated, says,
“Okay, if you don’t know the answer you pay me $5.00, and if I don’t know the answer,
I will pay you $500.00.”

This catches the blonde’s attention and, figuring there will be no end to this torment
unless she plays, agrees to the game. The lawyer asks the first question. “What’s the
distance from the earth to the moon?” The blonde doesn’t say a word, reaches into her
purse, pulls out a $5.00 bill and hands it to the lawyer. “Okay” says the lawyer, “your
turn.”

She asks the lawyer, “What goes up a hill with three legs and comes down with four
legs?” The lawyer, puzzled, takes out his laptop computer and searches all his references,
no answer. He taps into the air phone with his modem and searches the net and the
library of congress, no answer. Frustrated, he sends e-mails to all his friends and
coworkers, to no avail. After an hour, he wakes the blonde, and hands her $500.00.

The blonde says, “Thank you”, and turns back to get some more sleep.

The lawyer, who is more than a little miffed, wakes the blonde and asks, “Well, what’s

Faster Planes and Cheaper Flights

Faster planes and cheaper flights are making it easier than ever before for people to
travel. In the most ‘developed’ societies, visiting exotic places is a sought-after status
symbol. The tourism industries of both developed and developing countries have
recognized this fact and are learning to take advantage of it.
There are, however, some problems associated with this new industry. Firstly, there is
the increasing crime rate. Some local’s tourists as an easy prey because, not only are they
in unfamiliar territory and therefore less able to take care of themselves, but also they
carry visible items of wealth, such as cameras and jewelery which can be disposed of
quickly for profit.
Another major problem is health. With greater mobility comes greater danger of
spreading contagious diseases around the world. One carrier returning home could easily
start an epidemic before their illness was diagnosed. Moreover, the emergence of many
diseases which resist antibiotics is causing scientists to be increasingly concerned about
this issue.
Also to be considered is the natural environment, which can be seriously threatened by
too many visitors. Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, for example, is in danger of being
destroyed by tourists and there are plans to restrict visitors to some of the more delicate
coral cays.
These are just three of the reasons why any country should be wary of committing itself
to an extensive tourism development program.

1. Why does the natural environment become one of the serious problem associated with
the faster planes ail cheaper flight? Because ….

Snakes are reptiles (cold-blooded creatures). They belong to the same group as lizards
(the scaled group, Squamata) but from a sub-group of their own (Serpentes).
Snakes have two legs but a long time ago they had claws to help them slither along.
Snakes are not slimy. They are covered in scales which are just bumps on the skin. Their
skin is hard and glossy to reduce friction as the snake slithers along the ground.
Snakes often sun bathe on rocks in the warm weather. This is because snakes are cold-
blooded; they need the sun’s warmth to heat their bodies up.
Most snakes live in the country. Some types of snakes live in tress, some live in water,
but most live on the ground in deserted rabbit burrows, in thick, long grass and in old
logs.
A snake’s diet usually consists of frogs, lizard, and mice and other snakes. The
Anaconda can eat small crocodiles and even bears. Many snakes protect themselves with
their fangs. Some snakes are protected by scaring their enemies away like the Cobra. The
flying snakes glide away from danger. Their ribs spread apart and the skin stretches out.
Its technique is just like the sugar gliders.

TEXT 5

Antibiotic is a drug produced by certain microbes. Antibiotics destroy other microbes

that damage human tissues. They are used to treat a wide variety of diseases, including
gonorrhea, tonsillitis and tuberculosis. Antibiotics are sometimes called ‘wonder drugs’
because they can cure diseases such as meningitis, pneumonia and scarlet fever. But
when the antibiotics are overused, or misused, these drugs make a person sensitive being
attacked by a superbug.
Antibiotics do not always distinguish between harmless and dangerous microbes. If a
drug destroys too many harmless micro-organism, the pathogenic ones -the dangerous
microbes- will have a greater chance to multiply. This situation often leads to the
development of a new infection called superinfection. Extensive use of some antibiotics
may damage organs and tissues. For example, streptomycin, which is used to treat
tuberculosis, has caused kidney damage and deafness.
Resistance to antibiotics may be acquired by pathogenic microbes. The resistant
microbes transfer genetic material to non-resistant microbes and cause them to become
resistant. During antibiotic treatment, non-resistant microbes are destroyed, but resistant
types survive and multiply.
To avoid the side effect of antibiotics, you’d better not urge your doctor to prescribe
antibiotics. Keep in mind that antibiotics are only useful for bacterial infections and have
no effect on viruses, so they cannot be used for children pox, measles, and other viral
diseases.

18. Which diseases cannot be cured by antibiotics?

A. Tonsillitis
B. Meningitis
C. Chicken pox
D. Tuberculosis
E. Scarlet fever

19. Choose one from the following which is not the effect of using antibiotics
improperly?
A. Organs and tissues are damaged.
B. The pathogenic microbes multiply.
C. Harmless micro-organism are destroyed.
D. Pathogenic microbes become non-resistant.
E. New infection which is called superinfection develops.

2. READING COMPREHENSION

TEXT 1

Every single rock on the surface of the Earth-whether it is gravestone, a piece of

solidified lava from a volcano or a boulder that has broken from a cliff or mountain-is
slowly being broken down. This breaking down of rocks at or near the Earth’s surface
is called weathering. The word is used because the weather is mainly responsible.
Weathering turns solid rock into soft materials that may eventually form soil.
Air and water are the cause of most weathering. Sometimes they change the chemical
in the rocks, and sometimes they just break apart the rock physically. If water seeps
into the cracks in the rocks, for example, it may later freeze if the temperature falls
below 0 degrees Celsius. As the water turns to ice, it expands, pushing against the
sides of the rock with a pressure believe to be as much as 2,100 kilograms per square
centimetre. This forces the cracks open. Repeated freezing and thawing causes the
fragments to break away from the original rock, these may slide down a cliff or
mountain and form a sloping mass of fragments at the bottom, called scree.

1. According to the text,….

A. there are two kinds of rock, gravestone and a boulder
B. soft materials will turn to solidified lava through weathering

D. a cliff or mountain may slide down because of the water in the rocks
E. cracks in the rocks will turn water into ice at the temperature below 0 degrees
Celsius

2. The first paragraph is about….

A. the materials of weathering
B. the process of weathering
C. the impact of weathering
D. the definition of weathering
E. the result of weathering

3. We know from the text that….

A. very solid rock is impossible to break down
B. solid rock can turns into soil because of air and water
C. soft materials harders to eventually become rock
D. the weather can turn lava into gravestone

ketergantungan satu sama lain? Mungkin saja kalimat tersebut merupakan complex

B. Infinitive

Infinitive adalah base form (bentuk dasar) kata kerja yang terdiri dari to +
kata kerja. Contoh infinitive adalah to write, to run, to read.

(adverb).

Gerund and Infinitive, Apa Bedanya?

Gerund adalah bentuk noun (kata benda) yang diambil dari verb dengan
format present participle (verb + -ing), contohnya swimming. Sementara itu,
infinitive adalah to + base form, contohnya to swim.

antaranya adalah:
